École Banting Middle School 820 Banting Street, Coquitlam, British Columbia V3J 4J4 Phone: 604-939-9247 Fax: 604-937-8041 Website: www.sd43.bc.ca/middle/banting December 15, 2015 Parents/ Guardians, It is that time of the school year when students and parents begin the process of preparing for Secondary School. Included in this notice is information you will need in order to make the transition as easy as possible for both you and your child. Your catchment school was determined by using the address that you registered your child as living at (see second page). If you are uncertain of the catchment in which you live, it can be verified by using the school locator found on the school district website: http://mybaragar.com/index.cfm?event=page.SchoolLocatorPublic&DistrictCode=BC43 If you have changed your address, please contact our office at 604-939-9247. We will require proof of residency – generally a hydro bill or cable bill will suffice. Cross-Catchment Protocol If you wish your child to attend a different school than his/her catchment school, then you the parent/guardian must complete a cross-catchment form. The form can be completed electronically and can be found on the school district site (www.sd43.bc.ca) beginning February 5th 2016 @ 9:00 a.m. and will close on February 17th at 4:30 pm 2016. Alternatively, a paper copy can be picked up at any school beginning on February 10th. Paper copies must be turned in at the School Board office, 550 Poirier Ave., Coquitlam. All forms will be time stamped when they are turned in; first come, first served so timing and speed are important. The deadline to submit cross catchment requests is February 17th at 4:30pm! NOTE - You can attend and apply for any secondary school in the district. The majority of our English students will be attending Port Moody Secondary (a few to Centennial) and the majority of our French Immersion students will be attending Dr. Charles Best (a few to Riverside). Historically, Charles Best has been full and if you do not live in the Charles Best catchment, you could not attend. It appears to be the same this year. Note – if you are French Immersion and do not live in Charles Best catchment, you would go to Riverside – attending Banting does not guarantee Charles Best placement – your address does. I still encourage you to apply for a cross boundary transfer if you want to attend Charles Best but are not in the catchment (there is also an appeal process). Additionally, Heritage Woods Secondary has been full also (this is year to year). All this information is posted on our website. Additionally, you can find an attachment detailing the specialty programs in each secondary school which may assist you in choosing a school. Secondary School Tours There will be Secondary school tours at all the district Secondary schools on Thursday January 28, 2016. As in previous years, these tours occur on the same day and your child will be attending the tour for his/her catchment school. Students will be bussed to the feeder schools – details forthcoming in January. Students attending a tour at any other school outside of their catchment area must get to the school on their own. Students are expected to return to Banting after their tours. After a brief presentation, course selection sheets will be handed out to students. These sheets must be viewed, discussed and signed by a parent/guardian, and then returned to the student’s homeroom teacher by the due date indicated on the form. It is important to understand that any student who has a cross-catchment application approved after February 17th must then fill out another course selection sheet for the school that they are going to be attending. For students who will be attending a high school other than Charles Best or Port Moody, arrangements will be made by our counsellor, Ms. D’Amelio, to provide the forms to those particular students and then have the forms sent to the appropriate high school. Out of catchment schools do not visit Banting. Parents and students wishing any programs at other Secondary schools, or any other program of choice offered in the district, will need to contact the secondary school directly for information about admission requirements and specific timelines. Important Dates Contact the secondary school directly or visit their websites to verify dates, times, locations and any specific information about programs the school is offering.
