Chaverim Theater presents “Playing Chekhov”
Two one act comedies in Russian with English Subtitles.
(“Bear” and “Proposal”)
New York’s Chaverim Theater, known to audiences across the US for its play Ktuba or the
Marriage Contract, cordially invites you to the Premiere of its new play, Playing Chekhov,
based on the one-act comedies of the famous playwright.
The production is headed by one of Russia’s most talented directors, Gari Cherhnyakhovsky,
famous for his work at the Moscow Vakhtangov Theater (Princess Turandot, Stepan Razin,The
Threepenny Opera), Mossovet Theater (The Seagull, Sashka), Lenkom (The Tsar-Fish) and the
Mayakovsky Theater. Among his productions are Chekhov’s Unlce Vanya, Three Sisters, A
Marriage Proposal, and The Cherry Orchard.
The production designer is Semen Pastukh, winner of two Golden Mask awards, whose work
includes over 200 productions, including the plays The Hussar Ballad and The Bolt, at the
Bolshoi Theater, Moscow, the ballets The Swan Lake and Harlequinade at the Marriinsky
Theater, St.Petersburg, and the operas Eugene Onegin, The Queen of Spades, Iolanta, Boris
Godunov, and Khovanshchina at the Mikhailovsky Theater, St.Petersburg.
The costume designer is Galina Solovieva, winner of the Golden Soffit award, who has worked
with the world’s premier theaters, including Mariinsky Theater, Bolshoi Theater and the
Mikhailovsky Theater in Russia, Ballet Internationale, the New York City Ballet, Het
Nationale Ballet in the Netherlands and Ballet Net Japan. She has designed the costumes for
over one hundred ballets, operas and theatre productions. These include Othello, Eugene Onegin,
The Swan Lake, The Sleeping Beauty, Le Corsaire, The Bolt, The Nutcracker and The Firebird.
