John MCMAHAN
4 April 1780. Born.1
1802. John McMahan first appears in the Clark County tax lists in 1802 (see Tax List #1 for
1802, page 12).2 Whether this is the spouse of Susannah McMahan or some other John
McMahan is unknown. Subsequently, a John McMahan appears in the lists for 1803, 1804,
1805, 1806, 1807, 1808, 1809, 1810 (two entries, one with land), 1811, and 1812 (three
entries, including one John McMachan). The landed entry for 1810 is definitely the spouse
of Susannah McMahan.
John McMahan appears on the tax lists on the same day as William McMahan in 1803 (11
May), 1804 (5 April), 1805 (15 April), and 1810 (23 June). 3 John and William probably lived
close to each other in these years and might have gone together to pay their taxes. William
probably is John's brother.
14 Oct. 1802. Married Susanna McMahan in Madison County, Kentucky.4
20 August 1803. Birth of daughter Polly in Kentucky.5 Polly married Jesse McMahan on

1831 in Saline County, Missouri.10 She died on 3 Dec. 1845.11 Martin second married Judy
Bradley on 8 Dec. 1850.12 Martin died on 12 Dec. 1852.13 He was buried in Cambridge
Cemetery in Saline County, Missouri.14
23 Oct. 1809. John McMahan of Clark County purchased 3/4 acre and 2 square poles on
Strodes Creek, a branch of the Licking River, in Clark County, Kentucky, from John Hampton
of Clark County on 23 Oct. 1809 for $70. The land bordered the town of Winchester. The
deed was recorded on 23 Oct. 1809.15

1833.17 John died on 13 Jan. 1844. 18 He was buried in Cambridge Cemetery in Saline
County, Missouri.19
11 August 1810. Birth of son Thomas Wesley (“Wesley”) (twin). Wesley died after 19
June 1880, probably in Wise County, Texas.20
16 Oct. 1811. John McMahan (McMachan) and his wife, Susannah, of Clark County sold
3/4 acre and 2 square poles on Strodes Creek, a branch of the Licking River, in Clark County,
KY, to John Hampton of Clark County on 16 Oct. 1811 for $250. The land bordered the town
of Winchester. The deed was recorded on 15 June 1812. 21
1812. A John McMachan was appointed Jailor by the Clark County Court.22
14 Aug. 1843. In the will of John McMahan, Saline County, Missouri, his heirs are identified
as his wife, Susan McMahan, and three sons, Martin McMahan, John W. McMahan, and
Wesley McMahan.23 No mention was made of son Hervy B. McMahan, daughter Polly
McMahan, or their heirs.
20 Sep. 1843. Died. He was buried in Cambridge Cemetery, Saline County, Missouri. 24

bank of the Big Pigeon River in Hayward County [Tennessee]. They loaded
their possessions and live-stock on these keel boats in the early fall of 1817
and floated on the Big Pigeon River to the French Broad River. From there
they reached the Tennessee, going over the Muscle Shoals on to the Ohio to
the Mississippi which they crossed to about where St. Louis is located today.
This was known as Missouri Territory. They arrived in the winter, and the
French offered them home sites and rights to share public pasture which
they were glad to accept for the rest of the winter. The Gwinns in this group
were brothers Bartholomew, Allmon and William who had married three of
Abner Mullins’s sisters, namely Susannah Bly, Newraney and Agnes,
respectively. Hosea Hampton was Jedidiah’s brother. These people had
previously settled in what later became Cocke County, Tennessee.
The next spring they rowed or otherwise managed to get their keel
boats up the Missouri River to Booneville….
…
…The Gwinn families and Hosea Hampton settled on land that
became Saline County, Missouri.64
19 June 1821. The Knoxville Register for 19 June 1821 (Vol. 5, No. 256) announced that a 55
1/4 acre tract in Cocke County, Tennessee, located south of the Holston and the French
Broad and granted to Hosea Hampton, would be offered for sale in Newport, Tennessee, on
7 Aug. 1821 to satisfy the interest due.65

Randolph County, Missouri.100 She married Uriah Miles in about 1834, probably in Caswell

Susannah was to have his full estate until her death, and Mary Miles was to have $100. The
remaining heirs were each to get 1/7th of the balance of the estate following Susannah's
death. The will was witnessed on 5 Mar. 1850 by Calvin Graves and Stephen Neal. The
executor was Friend William Moore. (See Caswell County, North Carolina, Will Book T, p.
13.)116
According to family tradition, Jere Rudd went into to town one day and returned sharing his
horse with a small child. That child was his niece Mary Miles.117 This was undoubtedly a
child of John Miles and his wife Nancy Evans.118
1860. Jerry Rudd, 76, was identified as a Virginia-born farmer in the Federal Census. His
real estate was valued at $7,000 and his personal estate at $11,845. In addition to Jerry, the
household included Susanna, 71, born in North Carolina. 119

1877. Case of Wm. Lea as admr. of James Evans, James Evans, John Evans, Thomas Evans,
Henry Richmond & wife Elizabeth, William Turner(?) & wife Sarah vs. Franklin Rudd, Thos.
Rudd, Hezekiah Rudd, Alexander Rudd, James Miles & wife Irena [sic], Rufus Rudd, Abby Rudd,
Cornelia Rudd, and Jeremiah Rudd was heard before the Superior Court in Caswell County,
North Carolina. This case started as an effort by the heirs of Jere Rudd to recover land that
Jere sold to James Evans. Jere failed to put the standard “heirs and assigns” clause in the deed,
and so his heirs argued that the land should have reverted to them when James died. By
1877, the heirs of James Evans had countersued those of Jere Rudd. A jury trial in 1877
found for the heirs of James Evans.122

Robert STEPHENS
The evidence that Robert Stephens is Robert Willson Stephens, son of Peter, is
circumstantial and is based on the following facts. The first set is necessary but not
sufficient to make the case:

Robert Stephens’s first and last names match those of Robert Willson
Stephens (no documentation with a middle name has been found).

Based on the estimated birth dates of his children, Robert Stephens’s age is
about correct (i.e., he is not too young or too old to be Robert Willson Stephens,
who was born in about 1770135).

Robert Willson Stephens died somewhere in Kentucky arguably prior to 21
June 1829, which is where and by when Robert Stephens died.136
Given the foregoing, the following facts would appear to make the case:

Robert Stephens named one of his daughters Jenetta. The given name that a
sister of Robert Willson Stephens bore was Geonita/Junetta/Jenetta/Janetta, and
the given name that his maternal grandmother bore was variously recorded as
Garrala/Garnita/Geonita [Jenetta].
It should be recognized that, despite the foregoing, the two men might not be one and the
same.
The late Dorothy D. Hughes of Lubbock, Texas, observed that the Robert Stephens included
in the 1810 Federal census returns for Jefferson County, Virginia (now West Virginia),
appeared to be a very good match for the Robert Stephens included in the 1820 Federal
census returns for Casey County, Kentucky. 137 Jefferson County was created out of territory
originally part of Frederick County, Virginia, the presumed birthplace of Robert Stephens of
Casey County.
Upon closer examination, however, the match is not as perfect as originally thought. First,
there are the marriages of Robert Stephens to Ann Johnson in 1792 in Berkeley County,
Virginia (now West Virginia), and to Eliza Brown in 1806 in Jefferson County (Jefferson
County’s parent was Berkeley County). 138 There is no marriage of Robert to anyone named
Frances or Franky. Second, Robert Stephens of Jefferson County did not own slaves, while
Robert Stephens of Casey County did.139 Third, although Robert Stephens of Jefferson
County sold land in 1813,140 he did not disappear from the county personal property tax lists
until 1816,141 while Robert Stephens of Casey County appears to have been resident in that
county by 1813 and was definitely a resident by 1814. 142 Of course, these flies in the
ointment do not entirely rule out the possibility that the two Roberts are one in the same
person.

Stephens and his wife Frances: Culpeper County, Virginia: Robert Stevens & Frances
Rosson, 17 May 1793.144 No direct evidence is currently available, however, to link this
Culpeper County marriage bond to the Robert and Frances who were ancestors of Eunice
Verna MCMAHAN. More evidence is needed before this can be accepted as their marriage
bond.
About 1794. Birth of son James Stephens (first appears on Casey County tax roll in 1814 –
but assessed only for tax on a horse – and first appears as a 21-year-old in 1815).145
1795 - 1798. Birth of daughter Frances Stephens.
About 1799. Birth of daughter Elizabeth Stephens (birth year based on 1850 federal
census).146
About 1802. Birth of daughter Jenetta Stephens (birth year based on 1850 federal census

About 1806. Birth of son Robert Stephens (first appears on Casey County tax roll in

About 1815. Birth of daughter Susan Stephens in Virginia (based on 1850 census return
for Macon County, Missouri).153 The Stephens family appears to have two women named
Susan who were both born around 1815. The one in the Macon County household of George
Stephens at the time of the 1850 census along with Robert’s widow, Frances, is likely to be
George’s sister. Susan nee Stephens living with husband Stanley G. PELLEY in Grundy
County, Missouri in 1850154 is likely to be a daughter of son James, who married circa 1815.
The use of “Dawson” as a given name by descendants of Stanley and Susan would seem to
confirm this hypothesis, because James Stephens was married to Nancy DAWSON.
