Revolution for the Young Enterprise Company Programme Berkshire County Finals
competition
A company created by students from Slough Grammar School in Slough were crowned the
winners of the HSBC Innovation Awards at the Young Enterprise Berkshire County Finals
which took place at The Berkshire College of Agriculture in Maidenhead on 10th May.
Revolution will now go on to represent Berkshire at the South East of England Regional
Finals in Horsham on 12th June 2012.
Under the unique Young Enterprise Company Programme the student directors formed a
company called Revolution, manufacturing and selling an ingenious device to keep
earphones from becoming tangled. The team overcame a variety of problems throughout
the year but were delighted with their profit and the overall learning outcomes both in
terms of personal development and understanding business.
Rohan Arora, MD of Revolution, said: ‘"Through the Young Enterprise programme we have
been able to develop our existing skills set and discover new qualities such as teamwork,
leadership, time management, communication and analytical skills. Our product, the
loophole, a unique device designed to untangle headphones has really allowed us to express
our creativity and innovation. Our key message to anyone else considering participating in it
in coming years is to go for it! It is a unique experience to have a taste of the real world of
business. We are so excited to have won, we all worked very hard but we’ve really enjoyed
the challenges of learning about business this way with Young Enterprise, and are very proud
of our company .’
Revolution beat off strong competition from seven other student companies whose
excellent products included engraved jewellery, personalised hoodies, rewritten and
illustrated classics for younger children and a mobile phone app for A level revision students.
As runners up, Distinct from Herschel Grammar School in Slough also won the New Media
Award, based on a short video advertisement they created about their product; handcrafted
socks. They will also represent Berkshire at the South East Regional Finals in June.
All finalist companies presented to and were interviewed by a panel of judges who were
made up of senior representatives from Honda Europe, the main sponsor of the evening, the
Institute of Directors, Telefonica and Gamma Telecom.
Chair of judges, Malcolm Wicks, representing the Institute of Directors, said: “Young
Enterprise gives students the opportunity to learn an enormous amount about business and
about working together in teams for a common aim. This year the Berkshire County finalists
were outstanding. Their ideas were original, well thought through and each presented in
their own unique ways. The Institute of Directors were also very pleased to support Young
Enterprise and present an award for Innovation to a team from Ranelagh School for taking
on a very challenging project but one where the whole team learnt a vast amount about
business and business life.”
Chris Stock, chair of the Young Enterprise County Board and managing director of
FourThirds, a sales training and consultancy company, said: “YE provides an amazing real life
business experience to help bridge the gap between education and the business world. It
blows my mind every year to see the capability of these students. As an MD myself I am
