Leader: I will sing about the wonders of your love forever, O God!
People: I will tell everyone I meet about your faithfulness to all generations!
Leader: I will declare that your love stands firm, that your faithfulness is as enduring as the heavens
above!
People: Blessed are those who know you as their God, for they walk in the light of your
presence!
Leader: Come, let us worship our God.
Prayer to God
PRAYER OF CONFESSION:
Leader: God of love, we confess we often fail. We do not love all of our neighbors; we sometimes do
not even love everyone inside of our congregation.
People: Free us so that we can love like you. We ask for forgiveness for those times when we
have turned a blind eye to the injustices we see.
Leader: Forgive us for our closed hearts.
People: We confess that we find it easier to speak up for people than to speak with people, to get
to know others, than to walk in their shoes.
Leader: Humble our hearts, so that we may see your divinity in all of your creation.
SILENT PRAYER AND CONFESSION
WORDS OF ASSURANCE
Leader: One: Hear this good news, God forgives again and again; in the name of Jesus Christ you are
forgiven!
People: Thanks be to God.

Celebration of the Written Word
THE OLD TESTAMENT LESSON
CEB version:
2 Samuel: 1-14a
God’s promise to David
7 When the king was settled in his palace,[a] and the LORD had given him
rest from all his surrounding enemies, 2 the king said to the prophet
Nathan, “Look! I’m living in a cedar palace, but God’s chest is housed in
a tent!”[b]
Nathan said to the king, “Go ahead and do whatever you are thinking,
because the LORD is with you.”
3
But that very night the LORD’s word came to Nathan: 5 Go to my servant
David and tell him: This is what the LORD says: You are not the one to
build the temple for me to live in. 6 In fact, I haven’t lived in a temple from
the day I brought Israel out of Egypt until now. Instead, I have been
traveling around in a tent and in a dwelling. 7 Throughout my traveling
around with the Israelites, did I ever ask any of Israel’s tribal leaders I
appointed to shepherd my people: Why haven’t you built me a cedar
temple?
4
8
So then, say this to my servant David: This is what the LORD of heavenly
forces says: I took you from the pasture, from following the flock, to be
leader over my people Israel. 9 I’ve been with you wherever you’ve gone,
and I’ve eliminated all your enemies before you. Now I will make your
name great—like the name of the greatest people on earth. 10 I’m going to
provide a place for my people Israel, and plant them so that they may live
there and no longer be disturbed. Cruel people will no longer trouble
them, as they had been earlier,11 when I appointed leaders over my
people Israel. And I will give you rest from all your enemies.
And the LORD declares to you that the LORD will make a dynasty for
you. 12 When the time comes for you to die and you lie down with your
ancestors, I will raise up your descendant—one of your very own
children—to succeed you, and I will establish his kingdom. 13 He will build
a temple for my name, and I will establish his royal throne forever. 14 I will
be a father to him, and he will be a son to me.

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE
Lois Wood
The Lord’s Prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name;
Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who
sin against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.
For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen
SHARING OF OUR TITHES AND OFFERINGS

THE GOSPEL LESSON
Mark 6: 30-34, 53-56
(NRSV)
30 The apostles gathered around Jesus, and told him all that they had done and
taught. He said to them, “Come away to a deserted place all by yourselves and
rest a while.” For many were coming and going, and they had no leisure even to
eat. And they went away in the boat to a deserted place by themselves. Now many
saw them going and recognized them, and they hurried there on foot from all the
towns and arrived ahead of them. As he went ashore, he saw a great crowd; and
he had compassion for them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd;
and he began to teach them many things.
Continuing with verse 53:
When they had crossed over, they came to land at Gennesaret and moored the
boat. When they got out of the boat, people at once recognized him, and rushed
about that whole region and began to bring the sick on mats to wherever they
heard he was. And wherever he went, into villages or cities or farms, they laid the
sick in the marketplaces, and begged him that they might touch even the fringe of
his cloak; and all who touched it were healed.
The Word of God, for the people of God.
