Cabin passenger John Spooner designed
Fort Arthur on Church Hill, built between July
and October 1843 as a refuge from expected
Maori attack following the Wairau Massacre.
It had a 12-foot deep outer trench and
drawbridge, an inner trench and 8-foot
stockade with towers and loopholes for
muskets and 6 cannon. Spooner Range
bears his name.
