Biology 330 HISTOLOGY Lectures: T-Th 9:05-10:30 Room: Shiley 129 Spring 2005 Jeremy Fields Shiley 477 Office hours: MW 3:30-5:00; TTh 11:00-12:00;& by appointment Text: Histology, Ross, Kaye & Pawlina, 4th Ed. Histology is the study of cells and tissues that make up organ systems. The course begins with an investigation of the basic types of tissues, cell types and their specializations related to the function of the tissues. Then the course discusses how these tissues combine to produce the organs of the mammalian body. Lab manuals are required for the lab. You may wish to buy an atlas to assist you in the lab: the bookstore has the recommended one, A Photographic Atlas of Histology, Leboffe, Morton Publishing Co. There are others available -- I am unsure of which ones are still in print. Check out the UCSD bookstore if you wish to browse through others. A WORD ON TESTS We all get sick and have personal problems at various times in our lives. I can be accommodating if informed beforehand. All written tests will be taken on the dates assigned in the schedule unless you a very good reason to take the test at a different time. I must ask the Chair of the Biology department to approve any changes. If it is approved then you will be given a substitute (make up) test on the alternative date. The lecture tests are essay/short answer format. You are expected to be able to detail the specializations of the subcellular structures of the cells as related to their functions in context of the tissue, and detail the specializations of the extracellular matrix - if any. The final concentrates on the material covered in the latter half of the semester, but an understanding and knowledge of the material covered in the first half of the course is essential. When describing organs you are expected to note general arrangements of the tissues and specializations of cells. In some cases the focus will be on the changes occuring in cells as they develop. The lab tests will test your ability to identify cells, tissues and their some of their functions, with the second lab test concentrating more on the identification of organs and their associated specialized cells. More information on what is expected in your report on the slides that you prepare will be forthcoming in lab GRADING Overall, the lecture portion of the course counts for 70% of your grade; the laboratory portion counts for the remaining 30%. The various tests are weighted as follows: Test # 1 Test # 2 Final Lab Test # 1 Final Lab Exam Report on your tissues and slides TOTAL Overall score 97-100 % 93-96 % 90-92 % 87-89 % 83-86 % 80-82 % 77-79 % 73-76 % 70-72 % 55-69 % <=54 % 17.5 % 17.5 % 35.0 % 10.0 % 10.0 % 10.0 % 100 % Grade A+ A AB+ B BC+ C CD F
