Possible Activities for Clinical Competencies
COMPETENCY: Supervise documentation of nutrition assessment and
interventions. (CD7)
Be responsible for conducting nutrition assessments and interventions independently
on at least one of each of the following types of patients: Surgical, Cardiac, Diabetic,
Liver, Cancer, Neurological, Renal, Perinatal, Geriatric, Tube Feeding (standard), TPN
(standard), Tube feeding or TPN (complex), ARDS, Ventilator Dependent, Eating
Disorder, Pancreatitis, Immunosuppresive, or combinations of these
COMPETENCY: Supervise counseling, education and/or other interventions in
health promotion/disease prevention for individuals and patient/clients needing
medical nutrition therapy for common conditions. (CD9)
Be responsible for education/counseling patients with a minimum of one of each of the
following conditions: Cardiac, Diabetic, and Renal
COMPETENCY: Supervise nutrition screening of individual patients/clients.
(CD30)
Be responsible for performing all aspects of nutrition screening independently for at
least 3 patients
COMPETENCY: Supervise nutrition assessment of individual patients/clients with
common medical conditions. (CD31)
Be responsible for nutrition assessment for at least two of the following types of
patients: Cardiac, Diabetic, Surgical
COMPETENCY: Assess nutrition status of individual patients/clients with
complex medical conditions. (CD32)
Conduct nutrition assessment for at least two of the following types of patients: Renal,
Liver, Pancreatitis, ARDS, Ventilator Dependent
COMPETENCY: Design and implement nutrition care plans as indicated by the
patient's/client's health status. (CD34)
Write care plans in PIE or SOAP format for patients assessed in any of the above
categories (i.e., Renal, Diabetic, Cardiac, etc.)
COMPETENCY: Manage monitoring of patients'/clients' food and/or nutrient
intake. (CD35)
Independently manage all aspects of at least one 3-day calorie count; conduct meal
rounds
COMPETENCY: Select, implement, and evaluate standard enteral and parenteral
nutrition regimens. (CD36)
Select, implement, and evaluate an appropriate regimen for at least two patients on a
tube feeding and two patients on TPN
COMPETENCY: Develop and implement transitional feeding plans. (CD37)
Develop and implement a transitional feeding plan from parenteral to enteral and/or
from enteral to oral
COMPETENCY: Coordinate and modify nutrition care activities among care
givers. (CD38)
Coordinate and modify meal, supplement, or snack schedules for at least two patients
through recommendation or discussion among nursing or medical staff or patient family
members
COMPETENCY: Conduct nutrition care component of interdisciplinary team
conferences to discuss patient/client treatment and discharge planning. (CD39)
Discuss nutritional care of at least one patient during interdisciplinary team conferences
on oncology, subacute, etc. unit(s)
COMPETENCY: Refer patients/clients to appropriate community services for
general health, nutrition needs and to other primary care providers as
appropriate. (CD40)
Refer patients when appropriate to community services, such as outpatient nutrition
counseling, or to other primary care providers, such as speech therapy or social
services
COMPETENCY: Select, monitor, and evaluate complex enteral and parenteral
nutrition regimens, ie, more complicated health conditions in select populations,
eg, renal disease, multi-system organ failure, trauma. (NT4)
Select, implement, and evaluate an appropriate regimen for at least one patient on a
tube feeding and one patient on TPN with one of the complicated health conditions
listed above in the competency statement
COMPETENCY: Conduct counseling and education for patients/clients with
complex needs (NT6)
Provide education for at least one patient with combination diet modifications
