Island School 20 Borrett Road, Hong Kong Tel: (852) 2524-7135 Fax: (852) 2840-1673 www.island.edu.hk Principal Chris Binge, MA (Cantab) Paul Bayne, Hong Kong Award for Young People 15 February 2016 Dear Parents/Guardians, HONG KONG AWARD FOR YOUNG PEOPLE, BRONZE AWARD I am to explain the procedure for joining the Hong Kong Award for Young People (AYP), formerly the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme. The AYP is an excellent CAS activity and is an internationally recognised award, which is highly valued by universities and employers. The Award is an exciting challenge, which aims to actively promote the development of young people through involvement in four major activities. Bronze requirements are: Community Service (15 hours, over a minimum of 3 months) Physical recreation (12 hours, over minimum of 12 weeks) Non-physical skill (6 months of activity) Expeditions (2 two-day practice expeditions and one two-day qualifying expedition which requires a minimum of 24km) Perseverance and progress are underlying principles and the Award is not for the faint-hearted. Activities undertaken during school academic teaching time cannot count, but extra-curriculum activities organised through school (eg. school sports and clubs) can be counted. Completion of the Award will require considerable involvement in out of school activities, particularly for the Community Service and Expeditions. Bronze Award is only open to Year 10 students, who have chosen this as their Escape Component in Semester One. The training in the Escape programme will include camp craft, navigation and First Aid training. The expeditions are traditionally the highlight of AYP. However, students who are not on track to complete the Award (by falling behind with their community service, physical or non-physical activity) will not be allowed on the expeditions, since this involves time out of school. This is explained in the draft schedule attached to the letter. I would be grateful if parents and students would complete and return the attached consent and information form. The cost of the AYP Bronze is $1000, including the registration fee for the Schools Operating Authority, bus hire, campsite fees, and provision of tents, stoves, maps and compasses. Students are expected to provide their own personal equipment, including their own rucksack, sleeping bag and sleeping mat, as well as food for the expeditions. I cannot overemphasise the importance of a strong pair of boots to protect ankles on rough ground. Please also note that at times, in suitable places, during the expeditions, the participants may not be under direct supervision as they may be given opportunities to develop their team spirit and leadership independently. AYP expeditions, as with all out-of-school trips, has inherent dangers, such as: snakes, spiders, risk of separation, injury owing to a fall, fatigue owing to cold or heat. However, the students receive training to deal with the inherent risks. Students must register for the Award IN PERSON with Mr Bayne in Lab 132. Looking ahead, in Year 12, students may choose to continue their AYP programme and take the Silver Award. There will be a priority system for places on the Silver Award: 1st Priority Students who successfully completed the Bronze Award. nd 2 Priority ‘Direct entry’ students who have not yet had the AYP opportunity. 3rd Priority Students who failed to complete their Bronze Award. The AYP is an exciting and enjoyable challenge. It is demanding, but very rewarding and worthwhile. I hope that your son/daughter makes the most of this opportunity. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you require any further information. I agree to him/her taking part in any or all of the activities proposed. I have ensured that my son/daughter understands that it is important for his/her safety and the safety of the group that he/she obeys any rules and instructions given by the staff in charge and in particular follows the following Code of Conduct. CODE OF CONDUCT Students will be expected to exercise self-discipline, to show courtesy and consideration to staff, fellow students and members of the public. Additionally, for parents of secondary school students: Smoking, drinking alcohol and the consumption of drugs that are illegal in Hong Kong are expressly forbidden.
