true (T) or false (F)
My First Visit to London
The general opinion abroad is that London has fog or rain every day of the year, but on the day that I arrived it was
fine and warm. The next day was just as beautiful and you could smell the spring in the air. «Life is grand», I
thought when I took Anthony, the little boy, for a walk in Kensington Gardens. It was a straight road and I found the
way quite easily. The trees were fresh and green and lovely and there were beds of spring flowers. We passed a
pool with ducks, a children’s playground, a lake with boats and everywhere people, people whose language I
couldn’t understand.
It was time for us to go home. We turned down one path, that I thought would take us back- and we found ourselves
in Hyde Park. I was confused and rather frightened. I ran to the left and to the right and asked several old ladies for
the way to Addison Road, but I found to my horror that I couldn’t understand a single word they said in reply. I
walked on.
Meanwhile , the sun had gone behind a cloud. I was terribly tired and wanted nothing in the world so much as to
be at home. At last we got to the park gate, but there was worse than ever: there were too many buses, cars , people,
that I stood lost among them. I was ready to cry, but there was little Anthony, who had waited two hours for his tea.
In despair I crossed the street onto an island where I found a policeman. I took my courage in both hands and said,
«Please, sir, where is Addison Road?»
He began to explain, but when he saw that I could not understand, he became helpless too.
«Are you French?» he said.
«No», I replied, «but I speak French».
«Wait a moment. I learned French at school», he said, and explained to me the way. His French was bad but it was
more beautiful to me than all the words of all the poets. He smiled and then he raised his hand. How wonderful!
The traffic stopped and we crossed the road. I soon found myself in streets that I recognised. Life was grand once
more. The sun came out from behind the clouds and London was a beautiful city but for me the best thing in it was
the policeman at the park gate.
1) Usually it is raining in London, but when I came there it was fine.
2) The next day I and Anthony went for a walk in Covent Garden.

The Mystery of the Loch Ness Monster
There are a lot of lakes in Scotland. The people in Scotland call them «locks». And the most famous of all lochs is
Loch Ness. Scientists say that it is a very old lake, perhaps, it is 25,000 years old. The water in the lake is dark and
always very cold.
Loch Ness has its mystery. There are many stories about a water monster which, people say, lives in the lake. For
many years there have been reports of unusual and great creature. People who said they had seen Nessie, described
it as a strange creature which had a giraffe-like neck, a very small head and a great dark grey body.
The stories of this mysterious creature, called the «Loch Ness Monster» have filled the people with excitement and
curiosity. Many visitors and newspaper reporters have tried to photograph the monster. Not only newspaper
reporters and curious visitors take a great interest in the Loch Ness Monster. Scientists do not like mysteries, they
want facts. Expeditions of British, American and Canadian scientists took more than 100,000 underwater
photographs in Loch Ness, but they didn’t help to find out what the monster really is.
A lot is said and written about the monster, and for some people Nessie is good business : T-shirts with «Nessie» on

The Taj Mahal - A Rose-Coloured Crown
Long ago , there lived an emperor who loved his empress so dearly that he wanted to build a palace for her so that
she would be remembered forever.
Does that sound like the beginning of a fairy tale to you? Well, it isn’t, for in 1613 there actually was an emperor of
India, Shah Jahan, who married a beautiful woman named Taj Mahal. Her name meant «Crown of the Palace»
because she was the favourite of the emperor.
The emperor and the empress lived happily foe 18 years and had 13 children. But when she died giving birth to their
14th child, the emperor was so grieved at the loss of his lovely wife that he decided to build a palace in her memory.
The site he chose was in the small city of Agra in north central India. It was not to be an ordinary building, he
decided, but the most beautiful structure in the entire world. Shah Jahan hired architects from all over empire, and
time after time he turned down their plans, until finally he found one that pleased him.
Shah Jahan hired 20,000 men, and construction on the palace began in 1632. Twenty years later, when it was
finished, everyone agreed that it was the most beautiful palace in the world. The outside was pink-coloured
sandstone ; the inside , white marble brought in from the corners of the empire. Many of the walls were inlaid with
precious stones. The surrounding gardens contained 1,000 square feet of fragrant trees and exotic flowers. A long
pool ran down the centre of the garden and reflected the beautiful palace.
The emperor was so pleased with the palace that he decided to build a matching one across the river. Unfortunately,
he died before this could be done. His people buried him alongside his beloved wife.
The palace still stands today, and is considered to be the most beautiful in the world. Visitors to the Taj Mahal say
that when the sun sets , the whole palace shines like a rose-coloured crown.

One day a traveller in Africa went for a walk. When he was far from home, he saw a lion. The lion saw him at the
same time and began to go after him. When the traveller walked quickly, the lion walked quickly too. When he
stopped, the lion also stopped. The man thought, «The lion is going to jump at me when it is dark. I cannot run
away, so I must think of something.»
He looked round and saw a large stone. It was near a river which the lion could not see. The man came to the stone
and sat behind it. Then he took a stick, put his coat and his hat on it and put the stick out above the stone.
Soon the lion came nearer. He saw the coat and the hat and jumped at them. He jumped straight over the place
where the man sat and fell into the river. It was his last jump.

Fighting in the Dark
Many years ago two Englishmen who liked to travel very much went to a small town in the country. Their names

After a day’s trip they saw the town in the evening. It was dark when they came to a small hotel. They asked for a

lamp in that room.
When they were on the way to their room, Dick dropped the candle. It was very dark.
In the room they took their clothes off and went to bed. The beds were very big , and by mistake they got into the

«Let’s push them out of our beds».
They began pushing each other. After some time Dick and Tom were on the floor.
«Dick!» shouted Tom. «My man is stronger than me. He has pushed me down on the floor».

Mark Twain, the well known American writer, was going from the north of England to Manchester by train. He was
very tired and wanted to go to bed. So he asked the guard to tell him when they came to Manchester. «If I am
sleeping when you come to me, I’ll be angry», he said. «But I must be in Manchester in the morning. So even if I am
angry, please throw me out of the train.» The guard agreed, and Mark Twain went to bed.
When he opened his eyes, it was morning. People were walking in the corridor, a boy was crying and his mother
was trying to make him stop. Mark Twain got up, put on his clothes and went out into the corridor. The guard was
talking to a man at the end of the corridor, and Mark Twain went up to him.
«Haven’t we come to Manchester yet?» he asked.

The guard was surprised. «Are you the American who asked me to tell him when we come to Manchester?» he
asked.
«Yes, of course,» Mark Twain said.
«Then, who was the other man?» the guard continued. «Oh, now I understand why he was shouting and fighting as

A tourist travelling in Norway discovered that he had spend really all his money, and there was just enough to buy
his passage back to England. He thought the matter over and decided that it was only a two-days’ journey and he
could easily do without food. So he bought a ticket and went on board the ship. He closed his ears to the sound of
the lunch bell, and when dinner time came, he refused the invitation of a fellow-traveller to come with him to
dinner, saying that he didn’t feel well. The next morning he did not come to breakfast, pretending that he had
overslept. At lunch time he again managed to keep out of the way. At dinner time, however, he was so hungry that
he felt he could not stand it any more.
«I’m going to eat,» said he, «even if they throw me overboard afterwards».
At dinner table he ate everything put in front of him. When he could hold no more he was strong enough to face the
waiter. «Bring me the bill», he said to the fellow.
«The bill, sir?» said the waiter.
«Yes,» answered the traveller.
«There isn’t any bill,» was the reply. «On this ship meals are included in the fare».

Old Country Advice to the American Traveller (after W. Saroyan)
One day my uncle Melic travelled from Fresno to New York. Before he got aboard the train his uncle Garro paid
him a visit and told him about the dangers of travel.
«When you get on the train,» the old man said, «choose your seat carefully, sit down, and do not look about».
«Yes, sir,» my uncle said.
10
«Before you have travelled twenty miles, a young man will come to you and offer you a cigarette. Tell him you
don’t smoke».
«Yes, sir», my uncle said.
«In the dinner order the best food, and if the dinner is crowded , and a beautiful young lady sits at your table, do not
look into her eyes».
«Yes, sir», my uncle said.
«On your way back to your seat from the dinner», the old man said, «you will pass through the smoker. There you
will find a game of cards in progress. One of the players will invite you to join the game. Tell him, «I don’t speak
English».
«Yes, sir», my uncle said.
«That’s all», the old man said.
«Thank you very much», my uncle said.
«One thing more», the old man said. «When you go to bed at night, take your money out of your pocket and put it in
your shoe. Put your shoe under the pillow, keep your head on the pillow all night, and don’t sleep».
«Yes, sir,» my uncle said.
«That is all», the old man said.
The next day my uncle Melic got aboard the train and went to New York. The young man with cigarettes didn’t
appear, the beautiful young lady did not sit at his table, and there was no card game in progress in the smoker. My
uncle put his money in the shoe under the pillow and put his head on the pillow and didn’t sleep all the first night.
The second day he himself offered another young man a cigarette which the other young man accepted. In the
dinner my uncle went to sit at a table with a young lady. He started a poker game in the smoker, and long before the
train got to New York my uncle knew everybody aboard the train and everybody knew him. The journey was a very
pleasant one.
When my uncle Melic came back from New York, his old uncle Garro visited him again. «I see you are looking all
right», he said. «Did you follow my instructions?»
«Yes, sir», my uncle said.

About Badgers
A badger is a very interesting animal, but you can see it only in the evening, when it is dark. Then the badger comes
out of his underground home to eat.
The father badger is a big animal, as big as a cat. He is covered with grey fur, his legs are short and very strong, it
can dig very well. Its head is white with a little black fur on the top.
Badgers sleep during the day, and all winter too. In summer they come out from their underground homes, they
begin to wash their faces with their front paws, then they comb their long fur with their paws. When they have done
all that , the old badgers begin to play and to show their young how to catch mice or little birds.

About a Tiger
Once some Englishmen who were in India went on a journey through the forest. On the way back they found a little
tiger not more than two weeks old. They took the tiger and when they came to their tent, they tied it with a rope to
the pole in the middle of the tent. The little tiger liked the place and played with the rope. The men stood round him
and watched.
Two hours later when the men were at supper they heard the roar of a big tiger. The little tiger heard it too and
changed at once. It began to pull at the rope. The next minute a very big mother tiger jumped into the tent. She
didn’t look at the men. She saw only the little tiger in the middle of the tent. The mother tiger caught the little tiger
and pulled the rope. Then she turned to the door of the tent and jumped out. The people in the tent could not speak

A Cat Can Find Its Way Home
For some years I lived in London and had a small room in the house of Mrs Brown . Mrs Brown had two daughters;
they were schoolgirls. In summer when school was over, she usually sent the girls to their grandmother who lived
on a farm a hundred kilometres from London.
There was a cat in Mrs Brown’s house which had a kitten seven months old. Mrs Brown decided that the cat and its
kitten must go to the country too. They put the cat and the kitten into a basket and the girls left London by the
morning train. Two days later, Mrs Brown got a letter from her mother, which said that the girls were on the farm,
the cat was there too, but the kitten ran away the same evening.
A month passed and one morning a dirty cat ran into Mrs Brown’s kitchen. Mrs Brown tried to catch it but she could
not; the cat ran into a corner under the cupboard. Then Mrs Brown called it by the kitten’s name and the poor cat
came out of the corner and went up to her. Mrs Brown brought the kitten into my room and showed it to me. We

How Animals Learned to Do Something
Many years ago, in the early days of man’s history, when people and animals were great friends, a man called all the
animals together. He got on a large stone for all animals to see him and began to speak: « Are all present?» he asked.
«Yes, everybody is present», answered the horse. «My dear friends! Listen to me!» the man went on to say. «I am
angry with you. You are very lazy, you do not do anything. You have learned nothing. You cannot go on like this,
it’s time for you to learn to do something. In a month’s time I want you to come here and show me what you have
learned. I am sure you can learn a lot of things if you want to.»
With these words the man got off the stone and said good bye to the animals. The animals said good bye to the man
and to each other and left.
The animals thought and thought, they thought from early morning till late at night. In the end they thought of
something and each animal began to learn to do something. The horse began to learn to run quickly. It was going to
carry the man because at that time there were neither trams nor buses . The dog learned to bark, it wanted to help
the man to watch his animals. The cow began to give milk, some of the animals began to wear long warm wool.
The cock learned to sing early in the morning to tell everybody of the coming day. And it was very nice of him
because at that time there were no alarm clocks to wake the man up. The cock’s wife, the hen, began to lay eggs.
The bee learned to make honey. The monkey learned to jump from tree to tree and get fruit from high trees. And
what is more, the monkeys learned to make faces - he wanted the man to laugh looking at him, because there were
neither cinemas nor theatres at that time. Many birds learned to sing beautiful songs, they had their Singing lessons
every day. And some birds learned to carry letters because there were no post-offices at that time. So everybody
worked from morning till night and there were even no time to play games or run about. A month passed and the
man again called all the animals together. «Well,» he said, «I think you have learned to do something. It’s time for
you to show me what you have learned».
16
The lion came to the front, opened his mouth and said something. But how loudly! The man quickly closed his ears
with his hands and cried out: «That’ll do! Oh, stop it! Please, stop it!» And the lion shut his mouth. «You have
learned to speak wonderfully. For that you must be the king of all animals . Now, the others, show me what you can
do.» The bee began to make honey, the hen laid eggs, the cow gave milk, the horse ran quickly, the birds began to
sing wonderful songs.
The man was very pleased with them all. To have milk, eggs and honey every day. It was wonderful! «And what
about you?» the man said to the fish. The fish stood behind the other animals and didn’t do anything. 2What’s the
matter with you? Haven’t you learned anything?» The fish only opened and shut its mouth - it didn’t know what to
say. «So you haven’t learned to do anything and you cannot say a word», said the man angrily. «Very well, then
you must always be like that and I don’t want to see you again.» And from that day on the fish has not said a word
and has lived in the water where nobody can see it.

Read the story about a bat and do the exercises.
Why Bats and Owls Fly only at Night.
Do you know what a bat is? On the one hand, it is very much like a bird: it has wings and it can fly. But on the
other, it is very much like a mouse : it has teeth and ears, it doesn’t lay eggs and it has no feathers. And what is
more, the bat is blind.
Bats are certainly very strange animals. A mother bat carries her little ones on her and they drink her milk. They
leave her only when they are big and can fly. Bats sleep by day and fly at night. But why do bats fly only at night?
Here is a story which can tell you why.
17
One cool autumn day a bat flew up and down, crying because he was cold. The eagle, the king of birds, heard him.
«Are you crying because you are hungry, little bat?» asked the eagle. «No,» answered the poor bat. «I’m crying
because I am cold.» «But why don’t the birds cry?» the eagle wanted to know. «They are warm because they have
feathers and I am cold because I haven’t any feathers», said the bat. The eagle thought a little and then told one of
the birds to fly to all the other birds . «Tell them to leave their nests and to fly to me quickly,» he said.
When all the birds were there , the eagle asked them to give the bat a feather each. When the birds gave the bat a
feather each, the bat began to look wonderful. Each feather had a different colour and when the bat showed his
wings everybody saw that they were really beautiful. The bat was greatly pleased with his feathers. They were red,
white, bright, yellow, pale and dark blue, green, light brown and grey. The bat began to think of himself better than
any other bird or animal. He neither looked at them nor listened to them and flew in the sky with his nose high up.
The animals and birds did not like that. They all went to the eagle and told him about the bat.
The eagle did not like it either. So the eagle called the bat and said : «Little bat, all the birds are angry with you.
They have given you their feathers and you have not even thanked them. You think that only you are beautiful and
you are too pleased with yourself. Remember that the feathers that are on you now belonged to the birds. «They do
not like me because I look better than they. Just look and see for yourself», answered the bat and showed his wings,
which look really wonderful. The eagle was very angry with the bat. Very well, then each bird must take back the
feathers he has given you. If you are as beautiful as you think, you can go without the bird’s feathers.» And each
bird flew up to the bat and took its feather. So there is not a feather on the bat now. The bat is so angry with birds
that from that day on he has flown only at night not to meet any of them.
