Credits
This program has been planned for Sandhills
Center staff and intellectual/developmental
disabilities providers. Mental health and
substance abuse treatment providers are also
invited to attend.
0.6 CEUs and 6.0 contact hours credit will be
awarded to participants who attend 100% of the
program. Southern Regional AHEC adheres to
NBCC Continuing Education Guidelines Provider
#5362 and adheres to NAADAC Education
Provider Guidelines Provider #843 (Substance
Abuse Credit). This program will provide 6.0
contact hours (category A) continuing education
credit to NC Psychologists. Southern Regional
AHEC is an NBCC-Approved Continuing
Education Provider (ACEP™) and a cosponsor of
this event/program. Southern Regional AHEC
may award NBCC-approved clock hours for
events or programs that meet NBCC
requirements. The ACEP maintains responsibility
for the content of this event. (Provider # 5362)
No partial credit will be given. Individuals arriving
15 minutes or more after the starting time will not
receive credit.
Program Description
This workshop will present current knowledge
about differential diagnosis between ASD and
other conditions (e.g., ADHD, learning
disorders, depression, anxiety disorders as
well as intellectual disability and language
disorders in younger children), as well as
issues about comorbidity and treatment for
complex cases.
Speaker
Dr. Lauren Turner-Brown, PhD, is the Assistant
Director of the University of North Carolina at
Chapel Hill TEACCH Autism Program and an
Assistant Director in the Department of
Psychiatry. She earned her Ph.D. in Clinical
Psychology from Vanderbilt University and
completed postdoctoral clinical and research
training at UNC- Chapel Hill with TEACCH and
the Carolina Institute for Developmental
Disabilities. She has extensive clinical and
research experience with autism spectrum
disorders across the lifespan. Her current
research focuses on early identification of ASD
and interventions for toddlers as well as
adolescents and adults.

This event is presented by Southern Regional
AHEC for the Sandhills Center MCO and
registration is limited to their staff and
providers. Space is limited, and only two
persons from any one agency may attend.

Objectives
Upon conclusion of this program participants
should be able to:
 Describe how changes from DSM-IV to
DSM-IV affect ASD diagnosis and
comorbidity;
 List 5 conditions that are commonly
comorbid with ASD;
 Describe symptom differences for ASD,
ADHD, OCD;
 List 3 assessment tools for high functioning
ASD and limitations;
 State 3 facts about risk of suicidal ideation in
ASD; and
 State 3 strategies for adapting cognitive
behavior therapy to target comorbid anxiety
and ASD.
