The number of children identified with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) continues to rise with recent figures estimating 1 in 88 children have an ASD? Over the next year, Dr. Kelly Whalon and colleagues of the Center for Excellence in Early Childhood Studies will conduct two single case research studies investigating the impact of Reading to Engage Children with Autism in Language and Learning (RECALL) on the language, literacy, and social communication skills of young children with ASD. RECALL is an adaptation of an evidence based shared reading intervention, dialogic reading. In addition to the dialogic reading prompts and instructional sequence, RECALL embeds (1) strategies shown to be effective for young children with ASD, and (2) instructional targets that address the core challenges of young children with ASD that influence current and future literacy and language skills (e.g., joint attention, social reciprocity, emotion identification, and inference making).
