PRIMARY MONTHLY TEAM UPDATE November 2011 NOTES & INFO Social Skills Theme for the month of November is “Engaging in problem solving with adults and peers.” EVERYDAY MATH RESOURCES At Program Orientation you should have received Everyday Math handouts with lists of suggested activities, books and games for home use. If you need additional copies please notify your child's homeroom teacher. Student Reference Book - In the back of your child's Everyday Math Student Reference Book you will find detailed information on how to create and play a variety of math games. Involving your child and family members in the construction of these games provides opportunities to build not only math skills but relational and motor skills as well. Everyday Math Game Kits - The Springer Family Association (SFA) has purchased several "ready made" kits for each homeroom. These will be circulated among students for home use throughout the year. Online Everyday Math Games - By the end of November all primary and intermediate students will have access to the online Everyday Math games. Information will be sent home in the Wednesday Communication Folder once your child's math teacher has had the opportunity to introduce your child to games appropriate to his/her needs. Animated Algorithms (problem solving procedures) If you would like to see animations of the "Algorithms" (problem solving processes involving addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) utilized in the Everyday Math program you can access them in the following manner. Go to www.everydaymathonline.com and when the EMath screen comes up, click on "Launch", for the "Free Family Resource" section. This will bring up a number of option buttons including "Algorithms Handbook Animations". Click this button and a comprehensive list of algorithm animations will appear from which to select. These animations provide step-by-step visuals, paired with the auditory explanation, for a variety of problem solving processes using the four basic operations. These will be very helpful to you as your child broadens his/her awareness of strategies that are available for his or her use. Making Math Real at Home - "hands on" experiences. While all of the resources listed are helpful, the greatest support families can offer is to share the uses of math in the family's everyday life. Involve your child in home-based activities that make meaningful math connections to their lives. e.g. measuring for a new flowerbed, figuring out how many weeks it will take to save up for a desired toy, figuring out the cost of 10 gallons of gas. Springer Contributory Activities The Springer spirit of helping others is underway with a variety of student contributory activities. Upper School students are Primary soccer referees, and help with Order Out Day. Intermediate students help with recess equipment, guide tours during Open House, and help with primary physical education classes. Primary students remind us of the importance of following rules by making and displaying posters. Also, Student Council helps with the Bike Hike and the ice cream party that SFA provided for the students. Student Council plans to donate canned goods from the fall social to the Walnut Hills Kitchen, a social service agency that feeds hungry families. As you can see, Springer students have a great deal to offer to others! Unified Arts Update Physical Education: The Primary students will be working on their kicking and punting skills. They will use these skills to play games of line soccer and indoor soccer using four or five balls. Following this unit, students will begin working on throwing and catching. Primary Motor Therapy: In individual motor therapy students are learning how their individual work in motor can support their academic program. We are focusing on foundations for body control, motor planning and following multi-step directions. Our goal is for students to apply directionality concepts in their classroom work. You are invited to visit the motor room for a closer look during Getting to Know Us Days. Art: Look for the imaginative artwork created by the Primary students. It is hanging in our Springer Gallery, on the first floor between the cafeteria and the gym. Students are learning about warm and cool colors schemes, as well as using repetition and pattern in their artwork. Music: The primary classes are beginning to find their singing voices, and many of the students have even performed solos while playing a game! OVER PRIMARY MONTHLY TEAM UPDATE November 2011 By using gadgets like bouncy balls, a parachute, flashlights and slide whistles we discovered that by using a "siren voice" we are able to match pitch. Singing games, and echo songs will continue to be emphasized, as we gain confidence in our singing. Weather - Students are outside on the piazza before school and during recess unless there is precipitation or the weather is extremely cold. Please check with your child to be sure he/she is dressed according to the weather - jacket, hat, and gloves. Your help with this is greatly appreciated! Do you want your child to be featured in our lobby slideshow? Please send a description of your child’s extracurricular/volunteer activity or accomplishment along with a photo to Carole Barnhart, Communications Coordinator.
