INTERMEDIATE GREEN MONTHLY TEAM UPDATE
February 2011
NOTES & INFO
Social Skills Theme for the month of February is
“Showing Respect and Concern for Peers.”
Student Appreciation Day – February 14th
Following the success of previous years’ Student
Appreciation Day, Springer has chosen to continue with this
tradition and emphasize the theme of Student Appreciation
on February 14th. We're asking all members of the
community to join with us to celebrate the strengths and
contributions of our students on February 14th. We
recognize the importance of self awareness and
empowerment. Our Springer graduates have shown us how
these characteristics enable them to advocate for themselves.
Homeroom teachers will develop the Student Appreciation
theme as is developmentally appropriate to their classrooms.
At the Intermediate and Upper School levels if students wish
to bring Valentine’s cards to share, they will have the
opportunity to do so at the end of the day. The Intermediate
and Upper School departments will emphasize the broader
themes as outlined above rather than parties. We look
forward to a special Student Appreciation/Valentine Day!
Student Council News
Student Council continues the Springer spirit of giving to
others by making Valentines to lift the spirits of the
children in Children’s Hospital in February. Student
Council also sponsors Spirit Days at Springer. Our next
Spirit Day will be February 11th. Show your school spirit
by wearing Springer Wear or school colors-blue, gray and
white.
Parent Program-February 15th
Center programs offer parents the knowledge to better
support their children’s needs. On Tuesday, February 15
from 7:00pm-9:00pm, “Reading for Meaning in Grades 6
through 12: Frameworks for Comprehension will be
presented by Eileen Schroeder in the student cafeteria.
As students progress in school, the reality is that required
reading increases in complexity. This program provides
frameworks to enhance the “intentional thinking” that
should occur for comprehension. Multiple ready –to- use
strategies will be presented. Register by calling Larry
Annett 871-6080 ext. 402.
Weather - Students are outside on the piazza before school
and during recess unless there is precipitation or the
weather is extremely cold. Please check with your child to
be sure he/she is dressed according to the weather - jacket,
hat, and gloves. Your help with this is greatly appreciated!
Visiting Author
On February 17th Mary Kay Carson will visit Springer and
meet with all of the students as our Visiting Author. The
Visiting Author program is sponsored by SPA (Springer
Parent Association). Mary Kay began her writing career
working on the classroom magazine SuperScience at Scholastic,
Inc. in New York City in 1991. She has been a full-time
freelance writer for the past dozen years and is now the author
of dozens of books for children and teachers about space,
weather, nature, and other science and social studies topics.
She lives in Cincinnati. For updates on upcoming books go to:
www.marykaycarson.com.
REMINDERS
Springer School and Center will be closed or delayed
whenever the Cincinnati Public Schools are closed or
delayed for inclement weather. Cincinnati Public
Schools posts its decision on all the television and radio
stations carrying school closing information. If school is
delayed, please honor the delay and not have your child
arrive early. We recognize that some school district bus
systems may operate on their regular schedule or a
different delay schedule. Therefore a limited number of
staff will be available beginning at 8 a.m. to supervise
students in the cafeteria. Please be advised that if your
school district is on a delay or is closed, your child’s bus
transportation will be affected. In the unlikely event that
classes end early due to inclement weather, you will be
notified using the Emergency Communication system.
Supervision will be provided through the regular dismissal
time.
