Overview:
Career and Technology Education (CATE) has seven program areas including Agriculture
Science, Trade and Industrial Education, Business Education, Health Science, Marketing
Education, Family and Consumer Science, and Career Orientation. There are over 4900
students (duplicated count) taking 69 courses offered at the secondary level. There are 57
CATE instructors. CATE courses are competency based with applied “hands on” learning.
Many of the courses offered provide articulated Tech Prep credit to community colleges
across the state. CATE students generate 1.37 state funding. These dollars are sent to the
district and 85% must be spent on CATE programs. 15% of these funds are placed in general
funds for administrative costs. CATE received a $ 205,796.00 Carl Perkins grant this year.
This grant is stipulated for program improvement, job specific staff development, and pays
for a Special Population Coordinator and an aide. SAISD will also receive a Concho Valley
Tech prep grant in the amount of $ 5,648 dollars. These dollars will be used for recruitment,
research of new high tech/high wage training opportunities for students, innovative materials
for Tech Prep programs, and unique staff development opportunities for program
improvement.
 The Career and Technology director applied for additional Carl Perkins funding
that was available and received $10,569. This will be used to upgrade labs and
curriculum in the CATE programs.
 The Career and Technology Department has finish a very successful semester. We
will be re-calculating the number of CATE students during the next quarter due to
the fact that we have new students at semester
 Plans are under way for setting courses for the 2002-2003 school year. We will
be adding a CATE course in the Business department called Web Design and
Telecommunications. This course will replace the current course of
Webmastering. By making this change, the CATE special revenue funding is
expected to increase over $200,000 next year. This will pay the teacher salaries
(that are currently being paid from general funds), classroom supplies and
hopefully go toward some equipment upgrades.
 Planning is continuing for construction of Electronics, Computer Maintenance,
Health Science Technology, Drafting, Welding, and Metal Trades facilities at the
West Texas Training Center. Final plans should be ready this month.
 We originally received a $100, 000 Pregnancy, Education and Parenting grant this
fall. The end of October, we received and additional $15,720 from the PEP grant
to spend as needed. We have remodeled a large building on the Carver campus as
a day care facility. We currently have 12 infants in the day care and 4 more
students have requested services beginning in January. We will be hiring one
additional childcare worker to begin in January.
Goals:
 I am developing a plan for replacement of technology equipment in the CATE
programs. I will begin replacing as many labs as funding permits this year. The
most advanced labs will be the highest priority. Computers and software for the
Drafting lab have been ordered. Plans are underway to replace 6
Multimedia/Web Design/BCIS 2 labs with special revenue funds that were not
expended in 2000-2001 and have been rolled forward into current accounts.
 I have visited 3 other high schools while researching new and advanced
technology programs that are successful around the state. A strong consideration
is to propose a Media Technology course. Student surveys will be considered.
 A Culinary Arts course is proposed to be added at the Lake View High campus.
The cafeteria that was constructed in the West end of the ROTC building after the
fire at Lake View was designed for conversion to a classroom/Culinary Arts lab.
One wall will need to be added before this program can function.
Accomplishments/Progress for Present Quarter:
 Departmental meeting have been held. Floor plans and classroom design for the
new classrooms at the WTTC have gone to the architect for final drawings.
 Joy Gay, Career Education Coordinator, has completed career presentation to 210
seniors at Lake View High School in conjunction with their Senior Career
Research Project. These students received interest evaluations, current career
information and trends and orientation of the new Career Center at Lake View.
Joy also has presented the Educational Planning Guide and four-year graduation
plan to 8th grade students at Lincoln Jr. High, Edison Jr. High and Glenn Jr. High.
She is scheduled to present at Lee later this month.
 The Career and Technology department presented at a Parent Academy held at
Sam Houston. Information about CATE program areas and course catalogs were
shared. It was a very productive meeting.
 HOSA – Health Occupation Student Association – had 46 Central and Lake View
students compete at Area Contest in El Paso. 18 of those students qualified to
participate in State competition in Houston on April 10.
 DECA – Distributive Education Clubs of America – had 19 Central and Lake
View students compete in District contest. 11 students advanced to state
competition in Houston on February 21.
 BPA – Business Professional of America – had 18 students that qualified for state
competition held in Houston in late February. There were 2


Elizabeth Gould from Lake View High School competed
in verbal communication and Brent Piercing from Central High School competed
in CISCO networking and won their respective events. These students and
sponsors will be traveling to Chicago to participate in National competition this
spring.
FCCLA – Family, Career and Community Leaders of America – had 6 students
compete in regional contest in Abilene. 3 of these students qualified for state
competition that will be held in Corpus Christi on April 22.
Lake View and Central Agriculture Science teachers, along with many parent
volunteers, had the Annual SAISD Stock Show in January. FFA students have
also participated in stock shows at Ft. Worth, San Antonio, Houston, Tom Green
County, and San Angelo Stock Show. SAISD has been well represented
throughout the state.
.Joy Gay, Career and Technology Career Education Coordinator, has been in
going to 8th grade Career Investigation classes informing students about courses
available to them in high school. She has developed a multimedia presentation
that that explains to students about options that they have when developing their
graduation plans. Students are very interested and have already begun work on
these plans. This is a great opportunity for students to ask questions and learn
about new programs.
Tom Bright, Introduction to Construction Careers instructor at Lee Jr. High
School, will be retiring at the end of this semester. We have posted this job and
will soon begin interviewing. Mr. Bright has taught for 25 years and we will miss
him. Instructors for this position must have at least 5 years work experience in
the content area that they will be teaching. They will then be placed on an
emergency teaching permit until they can complete the mandatory college course
work to be a certified. It usually takes two summers to complete this. Only select
universities around the state offer the certification courses. The closest to San
Angelo is Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos.
Dave Ellis, instructor of Introduction to Transportation Careers and Introduction
to Metal Manufacturing Careers at Lincoln Jr. High, retired at the end of 1st
semester due to health reason. Cameron Burdine was hired to replace Mr. Ellis.
Cameron will also be working on his certification at Southwest Texas State
University.
