PUB Decade (2003-2012): Theme 7 Questionnaire (Hohai2005) Country: Nepal Person filling in questionnaire: Raghunath Jha Organisation: Institute of Engineering, Civil Engineering Department, Pulchowk Campus, Kathmandu Email: rnjha@mail.com.np 1. Is a National Working Group (NWG) or a Multi-National Working Group (MNWG) best for your country? NWG MNWG √ 2. If the answer to 1 is “MNWG”, with which other country or countries might you form an MNWG?: a. China b. India c. Bangladesh 3. Which research organisations in your country would contribute to, or benefit from, a PUB NWG or MNWG? a. Institute of Engineering b. Department of Hydrology and Meteorology c. DWIDP (Department of Water Induced Disaster Prevention) d. ICIMOD (International Center for Integrated Mountain Development) 4. Which Government Departments in your country would contribute to, or benefit from, a PUB NWG or MNWG? a. Department of Hydrology and Meteorology b. DWIDP (Department of Water Induced Disaster Prevention) 5. Which Universities and University Departments in your country would contribute to, or benefit from, a PUB NWG or MNWG? a. Tribhuwan University, Institute of Engineering, Civil Engineering Department b. Tribhuwan University, Central department of hydrology and Meteorology 6. Is there a national committee for IAHS in your country? Yes √ No 7. If the answer to 6 is “Yes”, who is the main contact person? Prof. Suresh Raj Chalise, International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development, GPO Box 3226, Jawalakhel, Lalitpur, Kathmandu, Nepal, e-mail: chalise@icimod.org.np fax: +977 1 524509 or 536747 tel: +977 1 525313 or 525312 8. What national committees might wish to be involved in a PUB National (or Multi-National) Working Group? DHM (Department of Hydrology and Meteorology) DWIDP (Department of Water Induced Disaster Prevention) ICIMOD (International Center for Integrated Mountain Development) 1 9. In which PUB international Thematic Working Groups and Themes are hydrologists in your country most interested and active? (Please see the Annex 1 and the PUB implementation Plan for the PUB international Thematic Working Groups) Core Project 1. Basin inter-comparison and classification Core Project 5: New hydrological theory Core Project 6. New model approaches Core Project 7. National Working Groups and PUB Tech Transfer 10. What new international Thematic Working Groups might hydrologists wish to see become established and perhaps lead? 11. One of the important goals of PUB is to establish a transferable hydrologic model applicable to ungauged basins. To test the hydrologic model in different catchment environments, hydrologic data exchange is quite important. Is it possible to establish a PUB catchment and to provide hydrologic data? Yes, we can transfer the GIS spatial data and Hydrological & Meteorological data 12. If your PUB WG could establish a PUB catchment, what kind of hydrologic data you could provide? What organization takes a lead to establish a PUB catchment? We can provide Hydrological & Meteorological and GIS data 13. Please describe PUB plan briefly. We have establish four working groups as follows Working Group 1: Water Resources Modeling Objective 1: Application of GIS & RS for Flood Plain Analysis- Hazard Assessment, Vulnerability assessment and Risk Assessment. Objective 2: Hydrological Impact of Global Climate Change. Objective 3: Impact of Land-use changes on Run-off. Working Group 2: Working Group Title: Extreme Flows Objective 1. Prediction of flood flows in ungauged basins of Nepal Objective 2. Flood hazard mapping of ungauged basins of Nepal Working Group 3: Working Group Title: Water Resources Assessment Objective 1: Hydrological uncertainty in water resources development Objective 2: Use of Hydro-informatics, GIS & RS for water resources assessment including flood assessment Objective 3: Effects of climate change and land-use change in hydrology. Working Group 4: Working Group Title: Erosion Assessment in Ungauged Basing Objective 1: To prepare the erosion hazard map of ungauged basin. Objective 2: To assess the erosion from the catchment Objective 3: Suggest the erosion control measures in ungauged catchment. 14. Please describe PUB your future collaboration plan briefly. We are weak in Hydrological Model development. However we can use the existing model and new model developed by PUB groups. We have sufficient hydrological and GIS database of the PUB catchment. 15.
