The best places to visit
There’s no place on earth like Brazil. It has some of the MOST (1) beautiful beaches in the world, some
of the busiest, most exciting cities, as well as the biggest area of unexplored rainforest on the planet.
Most people live near the sea so THERE (2) is a lot of empty space.
The country is, of course, enormous. No other country is BIGGER/LARGER (3) than Brazil in South
America. In fact, Brazil is the fifth-largest country in the world. It covers half of South America and has
borders with every South American country except Chile and Ecuador. It has 19 cities and more THAN
(4) 170 million people.
Brazil IS (5) a fascinating place to visit. The people are warm and FRIENDLY (6) and they generally

hours of the morning. Nobody worries about work the next day.
How do Brazilians stay awake with such a lifestyle? Well, Brazil also produces some of the BEST (12)
coffee in the world!

PART B: READING
TASK 1A: Read the text and complete the sentences with words/phrases from the
box. There is one extra!
I love my job!
James Shannon is a chef in a London restaurant. He talks about his job.
I work at Suzie’s, which is one of the most popular restaurants in central London. The best part of
working there is being part of a fantastic team of friendly and talented people.
I left school and started by washing dishes when I was only 16. I wasn’t interested in food and I never
cooked at home, but I worked hard, and soon became a waiter. Simon, who was head chef at the time,
then began to show me how to cook and I loved it so much I went to college to learn more.
When Simon left Suzie’s, I became head chef. At the time all the food was British. The quality was
excellent, but I wanted to do something different, so I decided to have an international menu. Now we
serve food from all around the world. There are so many fantastic markets and food shops in London
that I can usually find any ingredient I need.
I use a lot of natural ingredients such as brown rice, organic flour, and pasta. Some people think that
healthy food is boring, but they’re wrong. Well-prepared natural food has so much more flavour than
fast food. Our food is healthy and our customers love it. We use the very best meat and the highest
quality vegetables.
Suzie’s is open Monday to Friday from 5.00 p.m. to 11.00 p.m., and from 12.00 a.m. to 11.00 p.m. at
weekends. On Fridays and Saturdays we play live music from around the world. There’s a children’s
menu on Sundays and that’s when we serve traditional British food.

TASK 2: Read the article about Gil Conchas.
Trying to Understand
Gil Conchas is a professor at Harvard University. He teaches courses in sociology. Like most
professors, he also does research. Gil studies large groups of people. He studies the things
they believe and the things they say and do. Doing research means he never stops learning.
Growing up, Gil didn't know much about Harvard or any other university. His family was very
poor. He was born in the United States, but his parents were from Mexico. They didn't speak
English well. They worked on farms and picked grapes, tomatoes, and strawberries. They also
worked in factories. Gil's parents had a hard life, and he didn't want that for himself.
At age five, Gil was already a great help to his parents. He spoke English well, and he was
their interpreter. One time, his mother had to take a case to court, and Gil went with her. He
loved helping his mother. Other relatives depended on him, too. "Where's Gil? We need Gil!"
they said. It made him feel grown-up.
Gil was intelligent and hard-working, so he became a good student. Because of his success in
school, he had the chance to go to a very good university. He did well there, too. He could
choose any profession.
Now Gil does research on poor boys and girls across the United States, especially ones who
live in cities. Many of these children have serious problems. Their lives are difficult and even
dangerous. Some of them—like Gil—grow up and find success as adults. Others do not. Why
do some succeed and others fail? What should the government do? How can other people
help? Gil is trying to find answers to these questions.
Gil is also writing a book about his brother, Jesse. Jesse is in prison. He was in a fight on the
street. There was a crowd of about twenty young men, and one of them died. In prison, Jesse
graduated from high school. Now he's taking college courses. Gil calls or writes to him every
day and thinks about him a lot. He compares his brother's life with his own and wonders,
"What made our lives so different?"
Gil's success makes his parents extremely proud. However, they don't really understand his
work. Gil's father told him, "All I know is, you're doing good for other people— that's what
makes me happy." His mother says, "Why is Harvard so special? Come home and teach in
California! I can fix up the garage for you." Gil just smiles.
TASK 2A: Read these sentences. Write T (true) or F (false).
1. FALSE Gil Conchas is a student at Harvard University.
2. TRUE His parents worked on farms and in factories.
3. FALSE Gil wanted to do the same type of work as his parents.
4. TRUE Today, he studies the lives of poor boys and girls in U.S. cities.
5. FALSE Gil is also writing a book about his life.
6. FALSE Gil lives with his parents.
