New Zealand Qualifications Authority 2016 21757 version 2 Page 2 of 3 4 Definition Organisational standards and procedures refer to the documented training policies and procedures for animal handling and insemination, which must be approved by an approved Animal Ethics Advisory Committee (AEAC). Elements and performance criteria Element 1 Assess restraining area prior to inseminating cows for artificial insemination. Performance criteria 1.1 Location is assessed as suitable for insemination in accordance with organisational standards and procedures. Range 1.2 location – safe for technician, safe for cows. Restraining area is assessed to ensure cows cannot jump out, move excessively, or turn around while restrained. Element 2 Move and restrain cows for artificial insemination. Range individual cows, group of at least three cows. Performance criteria 2.1 Cows are moved using ACC recommended methods. 2.2 Cows are moved and restrained without stress and least risk of injury to themselves or other livestock. 2.3 Cows are moved and restrained without damage to plant or equipment. 2.4 Cows are moved and restrained without injury to people. 2.5 Cows are moved at a rate consistent with the number of cows, type of facility, and organisational standards and procedures. 2.6 Following artificial insemination, cows are released from restraint and returned to yard or area as agreed with the farmer. Please note Providers must be accredited by NZQA, or an inter-institutional body with delegated authority for quality assurance, before they can report credits from assessment against unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment. Industry Training Organisations must be accredited by NZQA before they can register credits from assessment against unit standards.
