TSB/2010/ UNIVERSITY OF LEICESTER TRAVELLING SCHOLARSHIPS 2009/10 The University offers up to ten Travelling Scholarships annually, of a maximum value of £400 each, available for second-year undergraduates. Through the generosity of Ede and Ravenscroft, the University's robe-makers, supplementary awards from a £1000 donation are also available for the best applicants. All students are eligible to apply but the proposed travel must be relevant to a subject in which the student is reading a second-year course. Please note that travel to a destination where you will be in paid employment does not qualify for a grant, nor does travel to your home country if you are an international student. The journey should relate to the applicant's area of study, but at the same time should not represent an integral or required part of a particular course. Applicants should demonstrate initiative in conception of the travel and resource in its planning. Applicants will be required to state what journey they intend to undertake; whether they will travel alone or as members of a party; the purpose for which the award is sought; and what relevance the proposed journey has to their course of study. The application must include an estimate of expenditure. The journey in question may be undertaken either in this country or abroad during the Easter or Long Vacations in 2010. Applications must be made on the prescribed form, which, when completed, must be submitted to a member of academic staff in your home department. Applications must reach departments by Monday 25 January 2010, and must be forwarded by the department to the Secretary of the Travelling Scholarships Board with their recommendation by Friday 29 January 2010. The panel will meet on 9 February 2010 to interview selected applicants and their academic sponsors/tutors, and awards will be announced shortly afterwards. The University reserves the right not to make all ten awards if the number of suitable applicants is insufficient. Successful applicants will be required to submit a report on the travel undertaken with the aid of the Scholarship, which includes details of expenditure. This report should be of 1,000 - 2,000 words in length and should where possible include illustrations, photographs and other supporting material. It must be submitted by 18 October 2010 at the latest to the Head of Department most closely associated with the travel project. Students who do not submit a report by the due date may be required to repay the Scholarship in full. SHEILA SPIRE TRAVELLING SCHOLARSHIPS Since 1999, the Travelling Scholarships Board has been asked to administer scholarships funded from a bequest to the University made by the late Sheila Spire, who was a lecturer in the former Department of Classics. In order to reflect Miss Spire’s academic interests, the Scholarships will be offered for projects which involve travel to, and the study of, ancient sites (for the purposes of these awards ‘ancient sites’ means any in situ relics of past civilisations, anywhere in the world). The scholarships are open to first- and second-year undergraduates from all disciplines, and projects need not relate to a student’s course of study. Successful applicants must, however, be able to demonstrate that the journey has a serious academic purpose. The application and interview arrangements are conducted alongside those for Travelling Scholarships (see above). Four awards of a maximum value of £400 will be offered in 2010. Successful applicants will be required to submit a report, as under the terms of the general Travelling Scholarships set out above.
