NAME:
Movement in the Mantle
Purpose ● To observe movement in the asthenosphere (Earth’s Mantle).
Hypothesis:
When the hot coloured water is in the bottom jar and the cold coloured water is in
the top jar________ will _____________.
When the cold coloured water is in the bottom jar and the hot coloured water is in
the top jar, the _________ will _____________.
Materials: (List all the materials used in the experiment.)
2 Large 750mL glass jars that are exactly the same size
Hot Tap Water
Cold Tap Water
Wax Paper
Food Colouring
Procedure:
Part 1:
1. Fill one jar with very hot tap water. Make sure that the water goes up to the
top of the jar.
2. Add a few drops of food colouring to the hot water. CAUTION: Be very
careful with hot water.
3. Fill the second jar with very cold water. Again, make sure that the water goes
up the very top of the jar.
4. Cut out a square piece of wax paper, 10cm by 10cm. Place the piece of
wax paper on top of the jar of cold water.
5. Hold the wax paper tightly on the jar of cold water as you carefully invert the
jar and place it on top of the jar of hot water. (if you do not hold the wax
paper tightly, you may get wet!)
6. Once the cold water jar is on top of the hot water jar, carefully pull out the
wax paper from between the jars.
7. Observe what happens. Record your results.
Part 2:
1. Repeat the procedure for Part 1, with two important differences. Place the
wax paper over the hot water jar. Place the cold water jar on the bottom
and the hot water jar on the bottom.
2. Observe and Record your results.
Observations:
____________________________________________________(Title)
Cold water on top of Hot water before
removal of wax paper
Water mixing
Observations Continued….

before removal of wax paper
Water mixing
Conclusion: (Explain what happened with the hot water in Part 1 and Part 2 as well as why food colouring was added
to the hot water. Explain what you can infer about what happens when a hot fluid and a cold fluid meet and how this helps
us understand what happens in the asthenosphere).
