February
Prof. CHEN Jining of DESE, Executive Vice President of Tsinghua University was
appointed as Deputy Chief Scientist of “Water Pollution Control and Treatment” Grand
National Science & Technology Special (“Water Special”). DESE undertook the project
of “Urban Water Environment Remediation Technology Research and Comprehensive
Demonstration of Taihu Lake River Network” under the subject of Urban Water
Environment of “Water Special”.
DESE launched an Advanced Training Program on Environmental Management for
Environmental Protection Bureau of Shan Xi Province.

Series activities of Learning & Practicing of Scientific Outlook on Development were
launched.
DESE hosted the 2nd International Conference on China Environmental Investment.
Tsinghua DESE-Shandong Shifang Environmental Protection & Bio-Energy
Corporation Joint Engineering Research & Development Center for Bio-Energy was
founded.

Hundreds of alumni from around the country and all over the world gathered at SIEEB
to celebrate Tsinghua's 98th anniversary and DESE's 25th anniversary.
DESE launched an Advanced Training Program on Environmental Management for
environmental authorities of He Bei Province.
Prof. JIN Wenyong, the 1st Dean of DESE, was granted National Character
Environmental Achievement Award by Hong Kong Environmental Protection
Association.
The 4th Tsinghua Environment-Friendly Science & Technology Competition kicked off.
Environmental Science and Engineering Experiment & Practice Educational Laboratory
was rated as 1st class laboratory of Tsinghua University.

Construction plan of Key Laboratory for Solid Waste Management and Emergency
Response, Ministry of Education (MOE), was approved by expert panel of MOE.
Basel Convention Coordinating Center for Asia and the Pacific Supported by DESE
was authorized as one of Stockholm Convention Regional Centers.
DESE Launched a Master of Engineering Program for China Everbright International
Limited.
DESE hosted the 2009 Persistent Organic Pollutants Forum and the 4th National POPs
Seminar.

DESE organized Celebration for Mr. QU Geping's 80th birthday & 40 years'contribution
in Environmental protection.
July
Prof. Hu Heping, Chairman of Tsinghua University Council, made an investigation at
DESE.
Environmental Science and Engineering Experiment & Practice Educational Laboratory
was rated as Beijing Experimental Teaching Demonstration Centre.
Research Center for Industry of China's Circular Economy, Tsinghua University was
founded.
Prof. HUANG Xia, faculty member of DESE, was specially appointed under the MOE's
Cheung Kong Scholars Award Plan.

“Comet Fiber Filter and its Application”, a scientific research by Associate Professor LI
Zhenyu, faculty member of DESE, won Golden Award on 18th National Invention
Exhibition.
September
Prof. QIAN Yi, member of Chinese Academy of Engineering and faculty member of
DESE, was granted Tsinghua Outstanding Contribution Award.
Frontiers of Environmental Science & Engineering in China, co-founded by Tsinghua
and Higher Education Press, was selected in Science Citation Index Expanded
Databases, becoming the first journal of Tsinghua included in SCI.
Tsinghua-SUEZ ENVIRONNEMENT Environmental Science and Engineering
Experiment & Practice Educational Laboratory was inaugurated.
"To Practice Sustainable Development Concept and Establish Green Education
System of University" was awarded Beijing Teaching Achievement Special Prize.
A Ph.D. Degree Thesis by LONG Feng, supervised by Prof. SHI Hanchang, was
selected into 2009 Beijing Excellent Ph.D Degree Thesis.
DESE launched the 23rd Workshop Series on Teaching and Education.
A joint research achievement by Harvard University and Tsinghua University was
published as Cover Story of Science.
DESE co-organized 2009 IWA Specialized Membrane Technology Conference with
International Water Association.
DESE co-organized 2009 Forum on Circular Economy Development of Chinese Cities
with Su Zhou Municipal Government.
Ms. Stefania Prestigiacomo, Italian Minister for the Environment, Land and Sea visited
DESE.
October
Prof. QIAN Yi, member of Chinese Academy of Engineering and faculty member of
DESE, was awarded the WFEO 2009 Medal of Excellence in Engineering Education.
DESE students took part in National Day Celebrations to mark the 60th birthday of the
People's Republic of China.
DESE's students explained teenagers' environmental creative artifacts made by waste
materials for Chinese, Japanese and South Korean leaders at the
Sino-Japanese-Korean Teenagers' Environmental Creative Artifacts Exhibition.
DESE hosted the 3rd National Ph.D Candidates Academic Conference on
Environmental Discipline.
A Memorandum of Understanding was signed between DESE and Germany Wuppertal
Institute for Climate, Environment and Energy.
DESE hosted the 3rd Sino-Swedish Workshop on Environment and Sustainable
Development.
The 2009 National Symposium on Advanced Treatment of Drinking Water was held at
DESE.

"Environmental Monitoring" by Prof. YU Gang, Dean of DESE, was awarded National
Excellent Course.
Tsinghua-Veolia Environment & Urban Management Advanced Program Kicked off.
DESE hosted the 6th Symposium on Environmental Simulation and Pollution Control.
DESE Hosted the International Workshop on Advanced Anaerobic Biotechnology.
DESE Student's Scientific Innovation Work Won Second Prize of 11th National
"Challenge Cup" Competition of Science & Technology.
The 4th International Conference on Solid Waste Management and Treatment
Technology was held at DESE.

"Atmospheric Particles and Their Precursors Emissions and Combined Pollution
Characteristics" was honored as the 2nd Prize of National Award for Natural
Sciences. The principal achievement persons include Prof. HE Kebin, Academician
HAO Jiming and Asso. Prof. DUAN Fengkui, faculty members of DESE.
"New Technology on Reclamation of Sewage of Lower Energy Consumption
Membrane Bioreactor and its Engineering application" was honored as the 2nd Prize of
National Award for Science and Technology Progress. The principal achievement
persons include Prof. HUANG Xia, WEN Xianghua and WANG Chenwen, faculty
members of DESE.
Tsinghua-SUEZ ENVIRONNEMENT Environmental Science and Engineering
Experiment & Practice Educational Laboratory was rated as National Experimental
Teaching Demonstration Center.
DESE co-hosted the 3rd National Seminar on Construction issues of Environment
Discipline with School of Environment Science and Engineering, South China
University of Technology.
Asso. Professor WANG Can, faculty member of DESE, attended the United Nations
Climate Change Conference.
DESE hosted the 2nd Sino-Korean Seminar on Persistent Organic Pollutants with
Pohang University of Science and Technology.
