Hawaiian Walkways’ routes in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park encompass lush
rain forests, lava tubes, steam vents, craters, a desert, islands of vegetation
isolated by lava flows, and, sometimes, eruption sites with molten lava. We
reach into seldom-visited corners of this active volcano, giving our hikers
uncrowded settings.
Kilauea remains a sacred place for those who follow traditional Hawaiian
practices. Our exploration of these varied realms opens us to the astonishing
scientific story of island creation and evolution, and the remarkably insightful
explanations of the people of old – ka po’e kahiko – for the phenomena they
observed so well.

Notes:
- Distance & Walking Time: Up to 4 miles, in about 5 hours
- “When” flowing lava is accessible, we will get groups as close as
safely possible.
- The footing on hardened lava is rocky and uneven. Closed shoes
are a must. Forest paths are smoother, mostly on natural surfaces.
- Some routes involve descents into craters as much as 400 feet
below.
- Because of the different climates, hikers need to be prepared for
sunny weather (with a sun hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen) and for
cool, perhaps misty weather (with a light jacket/sweatshirt).

Waipi'o on Horseback and Taro Farm

Our guests will travel approximately one and one half hours from the hotel to the
meeting spot at Waipi'o Lookout. From here, a four wheel drive van takes
guests into the valley to the stable.
This tour offers specially guided excursions on horseback in secluded Waipi'o
Valley. Small groups savor the charm of this 2 1/2 hour adventure in old Hawaii.
The trek takes a leisurely pace as guides narrate throughout the ride, explaining
the history, legends and facts of life in the valley. The path meanders through
lush jungle trails along the hillside; through streams and rivers; and on to ancient
Hawaiian villages. Riders see dramatic 1,200-foot waterfalls, taro patches, lotus
ponds, wild horses, exotic flowers, plants, native trees and birds. Spend quality
time on one of Waipi'o's largest taro farms. Learn and experience one of
Hawaii's oldest forms of farming that produces taro, a Hawaiian staple that helps
feed our local community.

Atlantis Submarine Tour

Kona, a historical town with a charming harbor steeped in the traditions of the
sea, provides a perfect backdrop and departure point for an adventure beneath
the sea. Board a specially designed ferry boat that will transport guests to the
Atlantis dive site offshore.
Once aboard the submarine, guests will descend to depths of up to 100 feet. An
educational commentary will entertain the passengers during the voyage lasting
approximately 50 minutes. Learn about this aquatic paradise teeming with exotic
fish and precious black coral as well as the volcanic evolution of the ocean floor.
After the dive, guests re-board the ferry where they will be able to enjoy the
beautiful Big Island mountain scenery as they cruise back to the Harbor. This
educational tour lasts almost two hours, extends from the old to the new, from

Kohala Mountain Kayak Cruise

This special tour provides guests with a historical briefing while enroute to the
waterway, via 4x4 vans. Upon arrival at the ditch, which is 1000 feet above sea
level in the Kohala Mountains, guests receive a safety briefing prior to boarding
their kayaks.
The kayaks are stable, high tech and double hulled with a five person capacity.
They have been selected for guest comfort and safety as no kayaking
experience is required.
The tour goes through 7 tunnels, over 4 flumes and in 5 ditches. The "cruise"
terminates in a sheltered area with a restroom and facilities for changing attire.
