Welcome to St. John’s Community Hospital
We welcome you and your family/carer to St. John’s Community
Hospital. Our aim is to give you the highest standard of professional
care, with courtesy, in a friendly caring, homely and safe environment.
In St John's Community Hospital we are commited to providing the
quality of care that is outlined in the our person centered Vision
Statement :-
“Our purpose is to provide quality care in a homely
environment where everyone is treated with dignity
and respect. This will be achieved by working with
patients and their families in order to meet each
person’s individual needs and preferences.
This is the essence of person centered care”.
We fully understand that coming into hospital may cause anxiety and
for this reason we hope that the information in this booklet will assist
you and your family/carer to gain an understanding of the services
provided here. If you require any assistance or information, please don’t
hesitate to ask a member of staff.
You are very welcome to make suggestions or comments. Your
suggestions can help us to deliver a high quality service to all of the
residents in St. John’s Community Hospital

Coming to St. John’s Community Hospital
Location
St. John’s Community Hospital is located on Munster Hill, in
Enniscorthy town (off the N.11)

Purpose and function of the hospital
The Purpose and function of the hospital is twofold: To provide long-term care to residents who due to multiple pathology or
high dependency care needs are no longer able to be cared for at home.
 To deliver a rehabilitation programme that is patient specific in order to
support the individual to achieve their maximum potential with activities
of daily living.
St Johns hospital provides care to 124 long term care residents; 1 Respite
patients and 20 Rehabilitation patients in 6 wards over two sites.
 Two wards, St Brigid and St Johns of Gods ward are situated in the old
hospital. These wards are home to 18 women and 19 men respectively.
 The new hospital consists of Oak and Elm ward which both have 32
beds, Ivy ward which has 20 beds and is a Dementia Unit and a
Rehabilitation Unit known as the Beech Ward.

How do I get to the Hospital?
By Car
The Hospital is near the intersection of John St/Parnell Rd/St. John’s Villas
housing estate (adjacent to the 1798 Visitor’s Centre) with the hospital
entrance on Munster Hill, in Enniscorthy town.
By bus
The Bus Eireann bus-stop is on Templeshannon Quay and from there, walk
across the new bridge, take first exit off roundabout onto the N30 New Ross
Road. You will pass the CBS School elevated on the right hand side. Take
first right after school and second left onto Munster hill. The entrance to
Hospital is on Munster hill (r.h.s.)
By Train
There is a train service to Enniscorthy town. For a timetable and prices
contact Iarnrod Eireann on 053 9233488.
By Taxi
There are a number of taxi services in Enniscorthy. You will find contact
details in the local phone book.

Where is the Hospital Car Park?
The main hospital car park is directly in front of the Reception area, with
ambulance space and wheelchair spaces. Parking for Rehab (Beech Ward)
and Therapies (Physiotherapy/Occupational therapy/ Speech and Language
therapy) is to the right of the hospital (follow the signs).
Parking for St. John of God’s ward (Ward 1) and St. Bridget’s ward (Ward 5)
is available in the courtyard area of the old hospital.
Please note that there is a one way traffic system in place for your safety.
Car parking is provided free of charge.
Reception.
The Reception desk is located at the Main Entrance hall of the new hospital. It
will operate as the administrative reception for the whole hospital and will be
staffed from 9.00 – 21.00hrs. Monday to Friday, with limited week-end cover.
A comfortable waiting area is available.
Visitor’s Toilets
A disabled and a standard toilet including baby changing facilities are located
adjacent to the main entrance hall in the new hospital and beside St John of
God ward in the old hospital.
Telephones
Each ward is equipped with telephones for in-coming calls. A portable
telephone is available at each nurses station to allow patients receive in-coming
calls in the Day Room.

Admission Policy
Patients are admitted to St. John’s Community Hospital under the following
categories:
 Rehabilitation, Respite or Long term care
 All admissions are pre-planned.
 All patients are assessed prior to admission by the multidisciplinary
team and are placed on a waiting list for continuing care or
rehabilitation.
Patients in rehab deemed to require long term care will be assessed by the
Multidisciplinary team and their names will be placed on the waiting list for
a residential bed in St John’s Community Hospital. Prior to a bed becoming
available patients will be transferred to a bed in a nursing home or
discharged home with support as appropriate.
Your care team
While you are in St. John’s Community Hospital you will be cared for by a
number of different staff, some will be involved in direct care while others will
be involved in providing other essential services. During your stay you may
also come in contact with health care staff in training. All staff wear name
badges which state their name and grade.

Confidentiality/Information (regarding your
care/treatment).
All details relating to your care will be treated as confidential and only staff
involved in your care will have access to your medical records. No information
will be given to a third party without your permission. However we request
that you advise us of the name of your contact person or next of kin but you
can be reassured that information about you will not be divulged without your
permission.
Call System
A call bell system operates in the new building of St. John’s community
Hospital. A staff member will show you how to use it when you come into the
ward. When you press the call bell, it rings at the Nurse’s station. We will
answer your call as soon as possible. This system is not available in the old
hospital but due to the layout of the wards, staff will hear your request for care
and respond to your call.
Medication
Your medication will be prescribed by the doctor and administered by nursing
staff. We request that you do not keep any medication with you. If you do
bring medication with you to hospital please ensure that you give it to the
nurse on duty.
Menu/Diet
A two weekly cycle menu is available in the dining area of your ward. If you
have any special requests or dietry needs please bring them to the attention of
a member of staff. If you have any comments or complaints about the food
please let your Nurse Manager know. She/he will arrange a meeting with the
catering manager who will be very happy to discuss your requirements with
you.

Personal Items
We would request for your own security that you only keep a small amount of
cash on your person or with your belongings.
It must be noted that if you keep sums of money, jewellery or other valuables with
you, St. John’s Community Hospital will not accept responsibility for loss or
damage.
All electronic equipment must be seen and passed by HSE staff prior to being
used in the hospital. This is to comply with health safety, fire precaution, and
HSE policy. If you have any equipment that you want to use in hospital please
bring it to the attention of a member of staff.
Hairdressing
A hairdressing service is available. Please speak with the ward staff if you
require the services of a hairdresser.
Note: A charge is made for this service. Please ask a member of staff to
provide you with the list of service and charges.
Chiropody
The Chiropodist is available on a sessional basis to each ward. Sessions are
prearranged with the Clinical Nurse Manager. Emergency appointments can
be arranged with the chiropodist by the C.N.M or nurse in charge to
review urgent cases.
Physiotherapy
Physiotherapy appointments are by referral from the Medical Officer only

Occupational Therapy
Occupational Therapy service will operate on a referral basis only.
Referrals will be taken for the priority areas listed below:





Seating;
Positioning;
Contractures;
Pressure relief;
Wheeled mobility.
Requirement for your stay
Toiletries – Shampoo, shower gel, comb/brush, toothpaste, deodorant, wipes,
denture powder or tablets, shaving kit including electric shaver.
Clothes – Nightdresses, pyjamas, dressing gown, underwear, slippers and
shoes.
Day clothes to include warm jacket or coat.
All clothes must be marked with your name and ward using permanent
marker or tape. Three changes of clothes including nightwear should be
available at all times.
Other requirements will be discussed at ward level.
Laundry
A limited laundry service is available at the hospital for residents. Where
possible we would request that relatives take responsibility for washing
patients’ personal clothing. If this is not possible and you need to avail of the
hospital laundry please note that clothes should be clearly marked with your
name and ward. The hospital does not take any responsibility for damage/loss
of items sent to the laundry. Please note that we cannot handwash any clothes.

Religious Services
A chaplaincy service is available to you to address your pastoral needs and
offer spiritual support and guidance. Clergy of all denominations are available
on an on call basis. The local priest and Church of Ireland Minister visit
regularly. Please let a member of ward staff know if you would like to speak to
a member of the clergy.
The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass is celebrated five days a week in the hospital
chapel. This is transmitted to all wards via close circuit TV for those who wish
to but cannot physically attend. Occasionally Mass is celebrated on the wards.
Mass times: Wed, Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 11.30am Sunday & Holy
days 11.15am
Hospital Oratory
The Hospital Oratory which is located in the new hospital is available for
patients to use for times of reflection and prayer.
Smoking Policy
In compliance with Government policy, smoking is only allowed in designated
areas of the hospital. If you are a smoker and wish to smoke please advise any
member of the ward staff who will arrange for you to avail of the designated
smoking room.
Please note this concession refers to patients only. Visitors are not permitted to
smoke in any area of the hospital.

Fire Regulations
A modern fire detection system is installed throughout the hospital. Staff
receive regular training in fire safety. Staff will bring appropriate Emergency
Exits to your attention.
Post
There is a daily postal service (Monday-Friday) to the hospital. All personal
post will be delivered to you by a staff member.
Visiting Times
Visiting on all wards except Beech ward is 11am -8.45pm (except at meal
times, unless by prior agreement with staff). Family participation with meals is
encouraged. If a family member wishes to assist their relative during meal
times this is encouraged. Families are requested to talk to staff on duty as there
may be some simple guidelines they need to be aware of regarding meals/diet
Visiting times on Beech ward are from 2 – 4.30pm and 5.30pm to 8.30pm
(unless by prior arrangement with staff). This is to facilitate patients who are
attending therapies and who require rest to promote recovery.
There is no visiting allowed to the therapies department unless by prior
arrangement with staff.
Relatives Room
Two relatives’ rooms are located at the entrance of the Oak and Elm Wards
and fitted with en-suite facilities, a reclining chair and kitchenette facilities.
These rooms are to facilitate relatives when a patient is very ill and a family
member wishes to remain overnight. This facility is for the families of patients
whom are very ill in any Ward in St Johns Community Hospital.

Charges/payments/methods of payment
The General Administration office is located on the corridor, two door from
Reception and is open Monday to Friday 9am to 1pm and from 2pm to 5pm. It
is advisable to ring in advance to ensure that there is a clerical officer available
to deal with your transaction.
Once you have been admitted a letter along with an assessment form will be
issued to you or your next of kin if they are looking after your financial affairs.
Next of Kin can contact the office on (053) 9232702 to arrange an appointment
to discuss the completed assessment form and will then be informed of any
charges, and answer any questions they may have or alternatively a staff
member can visit you on the ward to discuss these issues.
Contract of Care
A HSE Contract of Care will be available for all patients in the future
Friends of St. John’s Community Hospital
The “Friends of St. John’s Community Hospital” is a voluntary organisation
which was set up in 2004, to contribute to the well being of the patients of St
John’s Hospital. It pays a valuable role in providing patients with comforts in
their latter years. Some of the main fund raisers each year include a Golf
Classic held May/June, raffles, Sponsored walks/runs and the monies raised
have purchased specialised beds, chairs and other equipment.
The “Friends of St John’s” Hospital welcomes support from family members
and encourage active participation/membership of the organisation. We
welcome new members to the organisation at any time. Contact Mary Power,

Comments/complements/complaints
We are continually working to enhance the quality of our facilities and care
and your comments/compliments or complaints are always welcome. There is a
suggestion box available in reception and in the corridor between St John of
God and St Bridget’s ward. Any anxiety or concerns about the care you
receive should be raised with the Nurse Manager of the Ward immediately.

There is continued and ongoing education provided to all grades of staff to
ensure they remain up to date on all aspects of care.
Day Centre
St John’s Day centre is located to the front of the old building. It provides a
valuable service to the community. Patients from the long stay wards are
welcome to attend the day centre. Due to the popularity of this service
attendance is by appointment. Please discuss your interest in this service with
the nurse manager who will make the necessary arrangements.
