CURBSIDE COLLECTION
Guidelines for setting out your waste
Garbage is collected twice a week. See the collection schedules on pages 5-7.
All items for collection must be placed curbside before 7 a.m.
Your hauler will collect your garbage between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m.
Items must be placed curbside in a neat and orderly manner.
After collection, empty containers must be removed from the swale before the next day.
All garbage and small or loose items must be placed in garbage cans or tied plastic
garbage bags.
Garbage cans and bags must weigh less than 50 pounds each.
Garbage cans must:
be 32-gallon size or smaller
have handles
have a lid
be capable of holding the items placed in them
Items in cans should not exceed the height of the can rim.
The number of garbage cans or bags is unlimited.
Bundles must not exceed 4 feet in length and 50 pounds in weight
(4/50 Rule—see page 3).
Tree trunks and logs will be picked up with bulky waste (not regular garbage) and must
comply with the 4/50 Rule—see page 3.
Up to four unmounted car tires can be taken with each collection.
Hypodermic needles, syringes and other similar materials must be sealed in a hard
plastic container.
Loose items will not be collected.
Paper bags, cardboard boxes, recycling bins, garbage cans larger than 32 gallons, and
oil drums cannot be used as garbage containers.
YARD WASTE COLLECTION AND PREPARATION
Yard waste will be collected on your bulky waste collection days. Follow these
guidelines to ensure your materials will be picked up.
Place items at the curb prior to 7 a.m. on your bulky waste day. Keep yard waste
separated from regular bulky waste items for easier collection.
Green waste, such as tree trimmings, branches, horticultural materials, palm fronds,
etc., should be no longer than 4 feet in any direction. Yard waste must be securely tied
in bundles and not exceed 4 feet in any direction and 50 pounds in weight (4/50 Rule).
Tree trunks, logs and limbs too large to be bundled must be cut smaller than 4 feet and
weigh less than 50 pounds.
Stack green waste in orderly piles on the swale (away from mailboxes, trees, fire
hydrants, storm drains and other bulky waste piles).
Treated lumber, building supplies and wood should be placed with your regular bulky
waste pile. Treated lumber, building supplies and wood must be securely tied in
bundles not to exceed 4 feet in any direction and 50 pounds in weight (4/50 Rule).
Grass clippings, bagged leaves and weeds should be placed in your can or with your
regular bulky waste pile.
All items must be stacked neatly at the curb.
COLLECTION OF BULKY WASTE
What is bulky waste? Bulky waste includes household items such as couches, chairs,
mattresses, tables, appliances, carpets, padding and fencing. It also includes yard
waste such as tree trimmings, lumber and metal poles. To ensure the collection of your
bulky waste, please follow these simple guidelines.
Set out once per month on pre-scheduled days only, such as the first Tuesday of every
month. (See collection schedules—pages 5-7.)
Bulky waste items must be placed curbside in a neat and orderly manner.
Place items on the curb prior to 7 a.m. on your scheduled collection day.
Your hauler will collect your bulky waste between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m.
Separate yard waste piles from other bulky waste items and piles.
Cut and securely bundle tree trimmings such as branches and palm fronds.
Bundles must not exceed 4 feet in length and 50 pounds in weight (4/50 Rule—see
page 3.)
Yard waste must comply with the 4/50 Rule if it is to be collected with bulky waste and
regular garbage collections.
Cut tree trunks, logs and large limbs into sections not to exceed 4 feet in length and 50
pounds in weight and stack neatly at the curb.
Cut lumber, metal poles and other items of this nature into sections not to exceed 4 feet,
and tie into bundles of 50 pounds or less.
Roll and securely tie rugs, carpets, padding, fencing and other materials of this nature.
The number of bulky waste items is unlimited.
WHAT NOT TO DO
Bulky waste items set out in a disorderly or hazardous way will not be collected.
Bulky waste items may not be placed at the curb more than 24 hours prior to the
scheduled collection day. Doing so is subject to swale enforcement and will result in
additional charges to you.
Unacceptable items will not be moved to collect acceptable items.
Bulky waste items set out for collection must not be placed next to a mailbox, fire
hydrant, cable box, utility pole or close to a fence or car.
Do not place items in front of a vacant lot—they will not be collected.
BULKY WASTE TIPS
For the safety of children, please secure or remove doors from appliances before
placing out for collection.
Plan major yard work or garage cleanouts around bulky waste collection days.
Please remove or hammer down exposed nails in lumber.
Call 954-765-4222 or email recycle&recover@broward.org immediately if acceptable
bulky waste items are not picked up.
Check your calendar each month to verify the correct day for your bulky waste pickup.
For example, if your collection day is the fourth Thursday of the month, this may not
mean it’s the last Thursday of the month.
If your scheduled bulky waste collection day falls on Thanksgiving or Christmas Day,
check your collection schedule (page 5-7) for rescheduling information.
Bulky waste will not be collected on your garbage day unless your bulky waste
collection day happens to fall on your regular garbage day.
During hurricane season, once a hurricane warning has been issued, bulky waste
services will be suspended. The removal of hurricane debris will take precedent over
resumption of bulky waste collection.
If FPL or BellSouth cuts down branches or trees in your yard, it is your responsibility to
properly prepare the debris for pickup (4/50Rule).
Note: If appliances contain any materials that require special handling such as Freon,
the hauler can impose an additional fee for collection.
Curbside bulky waste collection is provided as a convenient service to you. However, if
necessary, Trash Transfer Station use is an option. Refer to Trash Transfer Station
information on page 11.
Broward County Waste and Recycling Services has final decision in any discrepancy.
UNACCEPTABLE MATERIALS FOR CURBSIDE COLLECTION
Due to health, safety and regulatory reasons, the following items are unacceptable
for curbside collection and will not be collected by the hauler. The owner is
responsible for the legal disposal of these items:
Construction, remodeling and demolition debris including all types of concrete
materials, bricks and brickwork.
Automotive bodies, engines, transmissions, batteries, large truck tires, mounted
automobile tires, and other automotive and marine parts.
Any materials/waste from commercial operations, including lawn and yard services.
Loose items, unbundled tree trimmings and branches.
The above items may be hauled to the Broward Interim Contingency (BIC) Landfill
and discarded for a fee. See page 12.
Oil, paint, insecticide, chemicals and other hazardous waste.
Excessive matter or debris resulting from land clearing and land development.
Some of the above items can be properly disposed of at Broward County’s Trash
Transfer Stations or Household Hazardous Waste Collection Centers. See pages 10
and 11 for further information and locations.
Large truck tires will not be collected curbside, nor will any of the items listed above.
THE 4/50 RULE
The 4/50 Rule is an important solid waste collection guideline that states:
Yard waste such as tree trimmings, branches, palm fronds, horticultural materials,
lumber, metal poles, etc. must be cut and bundled.
Bundles must be less than 4 feet in length and weigh less than 50 pounds.
Tree trunks, logs and large limbs must be less than 4 feet in length and weigh less
than 50 pounds.
This rule applies to items placed out for regular garbage and bulky waste collection.
The main reason yard waste is not collected by haulers is because the 4/50 Rule
has not been followed. Help keep your neighborhood looking good—follow the 4/50
Rule.
The 4/50 Rule is in place to help keep your solid waste collection costs low and your
neighborhood clean. If residents were allowed to place untied items at the curb,
haulers would have to use special equipment to collect it, resulting in collections
taking longer and costing more.
SWALE VIOLATIONS
Broward County Recycling and Contract Administration Division (RCAD) is working hard
to keep neighborhoods clean and safe by issuing Notices of Violation to property
owners who fail to comply with established solid waste collection guidelines. Property
owners who put out their bulky waste items too early or too late, do not bundle yard
waste, or do not comply with the 4/50 Rule or any other collection guidelines may be
subject to the following actions in this order:
Step 1: A Courtesy Notice of Violation and educational materials are left on the
property.
Step 2: If the violation is not corrected within the time frame specified on the Notice, an
official Notice of Violation will be issued and left on the property. In the event the
property is a rental, a copy of the violation notice is also mailed to the property owner.
The property owner will be required to correct the violation within five days.
Step 3: If the violation is not corrected within five days, the violation will be removed by
RCAD.
Step 4: The property owner will be sent an invoice for the collection and disposal of the
violation, as well as a $125 administrative fee.
Step 5: If the property owner does not pay the fees within the allotted time, RCAD will
initiate collection actions.
IMPORTANT: Property owners are responsible for all violations on their property, even if
they don’t occupy the property. In the event a violation is cleared from a rental property,
the property owner will be sent an invoice. Absence is not an acceptable excuse for not
maintaining a property. Property owners who continually violate guidelines will not
receive a Courtesy Notice, but instead be issued an official Notice of Violation
immediately.
Tips To Avoid Swale Violations
Make sure you know your scheduled monthly bulky waste collection day (see pages 57).
Put items out for bulky waste collection no more than 24 hours prior to your scheduled
monthly collection. Look for signs in your neighborhood.
Don’t put items out for collection once the truck has passed. Haulers will not come back
to get it, even if they are still in the area.
Follow established collection guidelines (see page 2).
Remember that the 4/50 Rule is a requirement for regular garbage and bulky waste
collections (see page 3).
If you receive a Courtesy Notice of Violation, make sure you resolve the problem by the
specified date.
If you have bulky waste items to dispose of and your scheduled monthly bulky waste
collection day isn’t coming up soon, use one of the Trash Transfer Stations, which are
free to unincorporated area residents. See page 11 for more information.
If you own a rental property in an unincorporated area, make sure your tenants know
the proper collection guidelines.
When in doubt, call the Customer Service line at 954-765-4222.

ILLEGAL DUMPING PROGRAM
Illegal dumping is the unlawful disposal of trash in an area not designated for such
materials. Illegal dumping occurs in all areas of Broward County and is done by
residents as well as businesses
Illegal dumping impacts your neighborhood and the environment!
Piles of trash in neighborhoods are unsightly and dangerous. Trash cans can attract
pests such as disease carrying rats, while illegally dumped tires can breed mosquitoes
carrying encephalitis and West Nile Virus. Children can be injured by sharp objects if
playing around these piles. Toxic substances that are dumped, such as motor oil,
pollute water sources such as ponds, canals and ground water. These unsightly piles
can also have a negative impact on property values. Once an illegal trash pile has been
dumped in your neighborhood, others will surely follow.
What you can do
If you witness someone in the act of illegal dumping or if you are aware of someone
dumping illegally, please call CRIMESTOPPERS at 954-493-TIPS (954-493-8477) and
follow these tips:
Tell what you know, not your name.
Give their license number, make and model of vehicle, location and time of illegal
dumping activity, and any other information you have.
If your tip leads to an arrest, you may be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000.
If there is a location in your neighborhood where illegal dumping is a problem, you can
request that a “No Dumping” sign be installed. The sign publicizes a $1,000 reward from
Crime Stoppers for people who report illegal dumping. To request a sign, call the project
coordinator at 954-474-1870.
HURRICANE PREPAREDNESS
BEFORE THE HURRICANE
Do:
Use your next bulky waste collection day to get rid of unwanted items.
Trim trees and shrubbery regularly. Cut weak branches and thin out foliage. This
decreases the chance that plants will be uprooted.
Place properly cut and bundled tree trimmings at the curb on your next regular
garbage collection day.
Refresh your supply of heavy-duty plastic garbage bags for household garbage.
Don’t:
Trim trees once a hurricane watch or warning is announced.
Put recycling and bulky waste items at the curb during a watch or warning.
Materials will not be collected due to the haulers having to prepare for the
upcoming storm.
Take bulky waste items to the Trash Transfer Stations during a watch or warning
as facilities will be temporarily closed.
AFTER THE HURRICANE
Do:
Watch the news for information regarding the reinstatement of garbage and
recycling services.
Understand that all services will resume as soon as possible after an emergency,
although it may be several weeks before bulky waste collections are reinstated
and hurricane debris is removed. The first priority will be to remove hurricane
debris prior to reinstating bulky waste collection. Once bulky waste collections
have been reinstated, your bulky waste will be collected on your next scheduled
bulky waste collection day.
Keep waste separated at the curb for easier collection (household garbage,
vegetative waste, and miscellaneous debris and trash.
Put all household garbage in securely tied plastic garbage bags. (This will
prevent it from becoming a health hazard if there is a delay in collection.)
Cut all tree limbs into sections 4 feet in length or less.
Place smaller and loose items in securely tied clear plastic garbage bags (weight
limit 50 pounds).
Place all debris curbside. (Collection contractors can only pick up debris from the
curb and public roadways.) It may take several weeks to clear debris, even in
the event of a weaker hurricane such as a category 1.
If FPL or Bellsouth cut down branches or trees in your yard, is your responsibility
to properly prepare the debris for collection (4/50) Rule).
Don’t:
Rely on County personnel and collection contractors to remove debris from
locations other than curbsides or public roadways.
Risk property damage or personal injury by placing debris near a fence, mailbox,
or on top of power line equipment.
Avoid poles, transformers and downed electrical wiring.
Place bulky waste and recycling at the curb until an announcement has been
made that these services have resumed.
Use paper bags or cardboard boxes for putting out household garbage. Place
items in front of vacant lots—they won’t be collected.
Note: In the event a special hurricane collection is scheduled, don’t wait to place debris
at the curb. Put it out as soon as possible. If you wait, you may miss the special
collection and be required to make your own arrangements for removal.

Young At Art Children’s Museum
Check out the “EarthWorks” exhibit at Young at Art Children’s Museum in Davie. You
and your family will “go green” by participating in fun activities such as driving a
recycling truck, sorting materials on a conveyor belt, and seeing what recyclables are
made into.
While exploring “EarthWorks,” you can also learn about the waste-to-energy experience
by operating a waste-to-energy plant. Put on your hard hat and use the crane to move
trash into a furnace, and discover the world of landfills.

COMMUNITY CLEANUP PROGRAM
Broward County Community Cleanup Program is designed to help residents improve
their community by removing debris and litter from swales, vacant lots, and other areas.
Community groups such as civic associations, church groups and other organizations
provide volunteers with transportation in the community and drinking water. Broward
County provides the necessary equipment including safety supplies, disposal of
collected debris, and overall event coordination.
How do you get started? Call a Broward County community cleanup coordinator at 954474-1821 to help your group organize an event, as well as make presentations about
the program.
Also, your community can take part in this year’s Great American Cleanup (scheduled
from March 1 through May 31, 2010). Call 954-474-1821 to schedule an event.
SOLID WASTE AND RECYCLING SPECIAL ASSESSMENT
In unincorporated Broward County, a non ad valorem special assessment is added to
the annual tax bill for single-family homes and multifamily properties with less than 10
units. This assessment covers the cost of solid waste and recycling collection services,
Trash Transfer Stations, Community Cleanup and Adopt-A-Street programs. For the
2010 service year, the special assessment is $270.00.
If you live in a newly constructed home, the billing process is different. Since the new
home is not yet on the tax roll for the solid waste and recycling special assessment,
Broward County authorizes your hauler to bill you directly for collection services. For the
first year, the hauler will bill you a prorated amount from the date the Certificate of
Occupancy was issued through December 31.
Broward County will often authorize your hauler to bill you directly from January 1 to
December 31 the following year. This is because it can take more than a year for the
assessment to be added to your tax bill. Once the assessment has been added to your
tax bill, you will no longer be billed by your hauler. Please note that this assessment is
paid in advance of services. Because of this, it may appear that you are paying for solid
waste and recycling services twice but you are not.
If you have any questions, please call 954-765-4222 or email

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Do I need to make special arrangements for the removal of yard waste when planning a
project to remove a large number of trees from my property?
Special arrangements are not necessary. Just be sure to follow the 4/50 Rule. It also
helps to plan your projects around bulky waste collection days. See pages 5-7 for more
information. The use of Trash Transfer Stations (page 11) is another option.
Can I place items at the curb that are associated with my business, or a friend’s
business?
No. Although Broward County offers extensive solid waste collection services, they are
for the residents of unincorporated areas only. Commercial businesses must contract
with Waste Management or All Service Refuse for removal of solid waste generated
through their operations or dispose of waste at any alternate disposal site (page 12).
Allowing businesses to use residential services delays the collection of solid waste
throughout the community and increases collection fees for all unincorporated residents.
How do I dispose of bulky waste items if I miss my monthly bulky waste collection day?
There are several ways you can dispose of bulky waste items should you miss your
collection day. You can:
Transport items to one of our conveniently located Trash Transfer Stations. See
page 11 for more information.
Transport items to an alternate disposal site located in Broward County. Please
note that there are fees associated with these disposal sites. See page 12 for
more information.
Contact your hauler to obtain a price quote to remove the items from your swale.
See pages 5-7 to locate your hauler.
