Our understanding of the interaction of obesity, hypertension, dyslipidemia, diabetes, and renal disease is evolving at a rapid pace. The publication of many new clinical trials has facilitated this knowledge. The course content is based on new clinical and research aspects of patient care. Armed with this knowledge, health care providers will be more effective at earlier detection and improved treatment of the various disorders which conspire to create premature cardiovascular death and morbidity. TARGET AUDIENCE The course is designed of primary care physicians including internists, family physicians and general practitioners as well as cardiologists, nephrologists, endocrinologists, neurologists, vascular surgeons, vascular medicine specialists, hypertension specialists, nurse practitioners and physician assistants, pharmacists, medical residents, and other healthcare providers. FORMAT Speakers will use a combination of lectures and panel discussions. Participants will be encouraged to ask questions related to clinical practice issues. A syllabus will be provided to all registered participants. EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES At the conclusion of this course, participants should be able to: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Discuss optimal blood pressure management for cardiovascular disease prevention. Understand the potential cardiovascular effects of available diabetes therapies. Describe the relationship between chronic kidney disease and heart disease. Review new data on HDL therapies. Discuss new therapies for atrial fibrillation, including catheter ablation. Understand and manage cardiovascular risk factors unique to women. ACCREDITATION This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential Areas and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education through the joint sponsorship of the Consortium for Southeastern Hypertension Control (COSEHC) with the Center for Cardiovascular Disease Prevention at the Baton Rouge Clinic. COSEHC is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians. CME DESIGNATION The Consortium for Southeastern Hypertension Control designates this educational activity for a maximum of 5.5 hours in Category 1 credits toward the AMA Physician’s Recognition Award.
