Drs. Leake and Riding-Malon are Assistant Professors in Radford University’s Psy.D. Program in Counseling Psychology 2:10-4:00 Ethics on the Spot: You’re Sitting with a Client when Suddenly… James L. Werth, Jr., Ph.D., ABPP Ethics workshops are often canned presentations where the presenter provides a lot of information that raises anxiety levels, perhaps in part because the suggestions may seem unrealistic from the perspective of the practitioner sitting with a client and suddenly is facing an ethical/legal/regulatory dilemma. Similarly, cases offered in workshops are often pre-prepared and may not seem reflective of real-life situations. In this presentation I will attempt a new way (for me) of providing ethical/legal/regulatory information. Specifically, I will incorporate one or more ethical dilemmas that are presented on the spot by a session attendee. We (the audience and me) will work through how to deal with the situation while incorporating relevant ethics, law, and regulations. We will then debrief and I will cover additional didactic material. Handouts at the session will be generic and I will send more specific information pertaining to the cases we explore after the session. This will be an experiential workshop so please come prepared and ready to role play a case and/or to serve as an active participant during the consultation phase of the analysis. Dr. Werth is Director of Radford University’s Psy.D. Program in Counseling Psychology. He serves as the Chair of the Ethics Committee for the Virginia Psychological Association and was a member of the American Psychological Association’s Ad Hoc Committee on Legal Issues. He has published widely on ethics, including co-editing a recent book on the duty to protect (with Drs. Elizabeth Welfel and Andy Benjamin).
