Course and Workshop Basic and Translational Endocrinology
15-19 April, 2013
Organizers:
Erica van den Akker, Leo Hofland, Robin Peeters, Jenny Visser, Frank
van Vliet
Participants: Postgraduates, Post docs and other interested participants of the
Postgraduate Schools MolMed and MGC and from other Universities
The Erasmus Postgraduate School Molecular Medicine has two main activities: the
organization of education for postgraduate students, and the stimulation of
cooperation between several departments with regards to translational research.
The aim of this course and workshop is to offer a comprehensive, interactive
introduction to the field of basic and translational Endocrinology, including the
paediatric aspects. The course aims at a small and specialised audience of PhD
students working in this field, who like to gain in-depth knowledge.
This course and workshops are primarily organized for PhD students and postdocs of the
Postgraduate Schools MolMed and MGC. Other participants, such as: students, young
MD’s and research technicians of the Erasmus MC or LUMC, as well as other researchers
in this field are welcome on ‘first come first served’ basis. The total number of
participants is limited to 25, the maximum of participants who give presentations is 16.
In the course program, a more important role is reserved for self-study of the
participants under the guidance of the teachers and moderators, and their presentations
about chosen subjects on Thursday afternoon and the whole Friday.
Days 1 and 2, Monday and Tuesday morning, will start with an overview given by the
moderator in a Q&A form by the participants themselves, as a ‘refreshments class’. The
morning and afternoon sessions of the Monday, Tuesday and Thursday are each
dedicated to one of the 6 specific themes of this course & workshop.
For the first time, we organise a special Mini-symposium with 4 keynote
speakers on Wednesday, in the afternoon session. The central theme will
be: Epigenetics. Internationally renowned keynote speakers will
highlight these themes of the course:
 Frank Grosveld, on Epigenetic regulation of gene expression;
 Marika Charalambous, on Imprinted genes in relation to
"developmental origins of health";
 Arturo Hernandez, on Genomic imprinting of the Dio3 locus; studies in
Dio3-/- mice;
 Lisette Stolk, on Epigenetics & high throughput
The keynote speakers will be announced widely in Erasmus MC.
We expect that the participants study previously some chapters from the
recommended textbook of this course:
Boron en Boulpaep; Medical Physiology, Second Edition

items as mentioned in the program. This is organised as follows:




Participants will be divided in pairs by the organization, before the course
starts;
Every pair is assigned two topics, mentioned in the program;
The pairs receive in time in advance some most useful publications for the
assigned topics from the organisers/moderators, which they must read and
digest in advance;
They contact the moderators as mentioned in the program of day 5;
They can ask all questions to the moderators about how to proceed.
Subscription fees: see below.
Please subscribe as soon as possible. The deadline was Wednesday April 3rd,
via the website of MolMed: www.molmed.nl. We will make the schedule for the
presentations and distribute the publications immediately after this date.
