Title: “Invasive Trees and Shrubs in the Landscape and How Do You Convince
People to Eliminate Them”
This talk will touch on the hazards and consequences of not getting a handle on invasives
now. The talk will also look at the positive side of controlling invasives for both
arborists and their clients.
9:05 am- 10:05 am Allison Kanoti, Maine Dept. of Agriculture, Conservation &
Forestry, Forest Entomologist
Title: “Forest Insect Update”
Maine arborists are on the frontlines of detecting invasive forest insects in communities
and are important boots on the ground (and in the trees!) for those already here. This
presentation will provide an update on forest insect issues in Maine, with a focus on some
of the invaders.
10:05 am – 10:15 am
BREAK
10:15 am – 11:15 am Mary Cerullo, Associate Director, Friends of Casco Bay
Title: “Green Lawns that Keep Casco Bay Blue: Using Data to Help Consumers
Make Better Choices”
For nearly 15 years, Friends of Casco Bay, has been documenting the presence of
pesticides and the impacts of nitrogen in our coastal waters. Working in tandem with the
Maine Board of Pesticides Control, Cooperative Extension, Master Gardeners, and
dedicated lawn care professionals, we use our data to persuade homeowners to adopt
ecological lawn care practices. We’ll share what we’ve learned, and we look forward to
hearing about new strategies for keeping lawn chemicals out of the Bay.
11:20 am – 12:20 pm Kalyn Bickerman, Ph.D. Student at UMO
Title: “The Health of Wild Bumblebees”
Kalyn has been researching the reasons behind the declines of certain species of native
bumblebees in Maine’s blueberry fields in order to aid Maine’s blueberry growers in
making effective management decisions that limit bumblebee deaths. Her research
investigates several of the proposed reasons behind native bumblebee declines: parasites
and pathogens; exposure to systemic pesticides; and possible differential sensitivity to
these pesticides.
