Narrative
Shortly after 10:00am local time today, a report was received by the accident investigation unit of the Civil Aviation Department that shortly
before 10am on 18 August 2014, a Cessna 340A, twin engine aircraft, registration N340MM, crashed 5nm NW from Freeport International
Airport on the 300 degree radial while on a left base for landing on runway 06.
Reports initially indicated that a person was seen swimming around the aircraft by an aircraft that was dispatched to look for the aircraft
after it lost contact with Freeport tower. That report was later determined to be inaccurate.
The local police, BASRA and other first responders were dispatched to the scene and upon further investigation confirmed that the aircraft
had in fact crashed and there were no survivors. There were four male occupants onboard the aircraft. Three (3) Us Citizens and one (1)
Canadian Citizen.. They all received fatal injuries. All respective Embassies and Consulates were notified The aircraft was a private flight
flown form Ormond Beach Florida to Freeport Int’l Airport Freeport, Grand Bahama, Bahamas.
The aircraft came to rest on a heading of approx. 300 degrees in water about 6 inches at low tide and approx. 2.5 to 3 feet at high tide.
The aircraft was substantially damaged. The aircraft crashed in an area that is difficult to access both during low and high tide by boat.
The AAIPU with assistance from manufacturers of the aircraft, engine and propeller will conduct an onsite investigation to determine the
cause of the accident. The manufacturers of the aircraft and its components, the National Transport Safety Board (NTSB), as well as the
Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) of the United states of America are providing vital background support and logistics.
This preliminary report outlines information gathered up to this point in the investigation. Information missing will be completed in the final
report.
