Dr. Ama Alexis, a Board Certified Allergist / Immunologist, diagnoses and treats pediatric allergies.
These allergies, if untreated, may lead to future health complications and a lower quality of life for
your children. Consult our Pediatric Allergy Specialists and together we'll establish a treatment plan for
happy, allergy-free kids!
We use only the latest medical equipment and technology, so your children will feel calm and
comfortable during their visit. Throughout our comprehensive allergy testing process fascinates many
kids, as it empowers and fascinates children to learn how each individual body functions and how each
person responds to their surroundings. Each visit will educate your child to properly care for his or her
health, taking the mystery and fear out of allergies and medicine.
For your convenience, we have offices in several locations throughout Manhattan. Our courteous and
professional staff will explain each step in the diagnostic and treatment process. We like to include
parents in the discussion about their child's allergy treatment plan, and we think you will agree. Our
medical staff will gladly answer any questions you have during your appointment. Of course, you may
also choose to contact us directly through this website.
On this website you'll find an Allergy FAQs page and valuable timesaving online patient registration
forms. We also provide lists of more common allergies, an Allergy Resources page with links to
regional and national pediatric allergists / immunologists, a page for contact and appointment request
forms, as well as locations of our Manhattan offices.

<h1> Allergy Treatment & Services /<h1>

Food allergies/ Anaphylaxis: Caused by sensitivities to proteins in certain foods. A more severe
reaction, anaphylaxis, develops within seconds of exposure. Anaphylaxis may cause death, and
patients often carry adrenaline auto-injectors (EpiPen<Link to http://www.epipen.com/>,
Anapen <Link to http://anapen.net/>, and Twinject <Link to http://www.twinject.com/>, are
some brand name versions of this product.)

Nasal and eye allergies/ Hay fever: Also known as allergic rhinitis, hay fever sufferers
experience an inflammation of the nasal passages. Known as a seasonal allergy, hay fever
occurs during pollinating periods, mainly in the Spring and Fall. Hay fever is greatly mitigated
by reducing exposure to pollen, in some cases simply by closing doors and windows at home or
in your office or car. Consult an allergist if you or your child suffers from allergic rhinitis.

Eczema / Atopic dermatitis: While often seasonal, eczema and atopic dermatitis may afflict
sufferers throughout the year. Dry winter climates contribute to symptoms, and often bring them
about. However, many other factors contribute to eczema as well. Diet, stress and clothing
(fabric) or detergent may cause eczema in individuals not previously known to show symptoms.

Asthma /Pulmonary function testing: NY Pediatric Allergists tests for varying levels of
pulmonary functioning in order to treat asthma and other respiratory ailments. Newer
technologies of measuring “lung capacity” help physicians to better diagnose and treat asthma
and its effects.

Immunotherapy: Immunotherapy, or “allergy shots,” treats allergies via exposure to a specific
allergen for the body to build up an immune response to that allergen.

Penicillin skin testing: Testing for penicillin allergy is performed using a skin test. Ask your
allergist about penicillin skin testing.

Hives: In most cases, hives, or urticaria, aren’t fatal. However, hives represent a reaction to
allergens, and should be treated by a licensed allergist.

Contact dermatitis / Patch testing: When skin comes in contact with an allergen, susceptible
individuals may develop contact dermatitis, which can look like a rash or skin irritation. Your
child’s allergist will diagnose and treat all forms of contact dermatitis.

<h1> What is causing your child’s allergic reactions? /<h1>
Many children suffer from seasonal allergies and allergic reactions. Allergens often lurk where we
would least expect them. Children might take these reactions personally, and think that there is
“something wrong” with them. Our first role as parents and as physicians is to safeguard our children,
but we should also assure them that many people suffer from allergies. There is nothing out of the
ordinary about allergies. Once children are comfortable and understand that their allergies are treatable,
going to the doctor becomes entertaining, even interesting, to most children.
Many objects in the home might act as allergy triggers. As a rule, allergic reactions develop as part of
our body’s defense mechanism, and we can become allergic to many different substances. As adults, we
have the ability to stay aware and informed. Children are often unaware of what is triggering their
allergies. Not knowing what might be triggering our allergies is part of what makes allergies so
frightening for many children. As parents, we want our children to be healthy and happy. Fortunately,
NY Pediatric Allergists can help provide your children with health and happiness.
Allergic reactions can usually be limited through exposure and avoidance. Parental care and vigilance
is important, and you can reduce your child’s changes of an allergic reaction by following a few simple
tips. <Link to Tips to Avoiding an Allergic Reaction>
Seek immediate medical attention if your child is having an allergic reaction. With our many locations
in Manhattan <Link to Our Locations page>, medical assistance is right around the corner.

<meta name = “description” content = “Common allergens are found in every home. NY Pediatric
Allergists offers a few tips to avoid allergies,” />
<meta name = “keywords” content = “allergy triggers, food allergies, plant allergies, detergent
allergies, insect bite allergies, dust mite allergies, animal danger,” />
<h1> Common Allergens Are Found in Every Home /<h1>
 Food allergies: Peanuts, soy, milk or eggs. Avoid foods that contain, in whole or in part, any
ingredients that your child is allergic to.
 Plant allergies: Poison Ivy, Poison Sumac – Avoiding and keeping wooded area neatly
manicured are methods to avoid exposure to poison ivy and poison sumac.
 Detergents: many brands now offer alternatives for sensitive skin.
 Insect bites and stings: Once an allergist or immunologist has diagnosed an allergy to insect
bites or stings, you should research and educate your child about where that insect is found and
how to avoid contact.
 Dust and dust mites: Hypoallergenic pillows and mattress covers will reduce dust mite
populations. However, regular dusting, cleaning and vacuuming is also required.
 Animal dander: You should avoid pets if your child has an allergy to animal dander. Many
people mistakenly assume that pet hair is what causes allergies, and while investing in lint
rollers and keeping your closets closed to pets helps, what actually triggers our animal dander
allergies is our pet’s saliva. For example, when cat saliva dries on fur, it dissolves into a protein
that can become airborne. When you hold your pet, these proteins are transferred to your
clothes and hands. Avoiding extended exposure to pet fur and saliva is one way to limit the
strength and duration of your allergic reactions.
 If you or your child suffers from any severe allergic reactions, inquire with your allergist or
immunologist about an adrenaline auto-injector for use in emergencies.

<h1> Your Resource for Allergies and Allergic Reactions /<h1>
The following sites are all regionally- and nationally-known organizations that work to inform parents
and the public about allergies and allergic reactions. Whenever you seek information about pediatric
allergies on the Internet, it is best to rely on .gov or .edu sites and resources to avoid conflicting or paid
information. If you have any further questions, do not delay in consulting your pediatric allergist.
These links will direct you to both knowledgeable and easy-to-navigate sites which inform and are the
best way to educate yourself about your child's allergies. They do not, however, substitute for a
consulting with an allergist or immunologist regarding your child's health and welfare.
