EAST AND WEST –

Second Announcement
INVITATION
We are pleased to invite you to participate in The XXV Scientific Instruments Symposium.
We will be delighted to welcome you to Krakow. Apart from scientific sessions and meetings,
you will be given an opportunity to enjoy the culture and history of this region of our country.
PLACES AND DATES
The symposium will start on the 10th and end on the 14th of September in Krakow at the
Jagiellonian University. After the Symposium we plan to organise three post-conference
tours: to Wieliczka Salt Mine, to Auschwitz-Birkeanu Concentration Camp and a sightseeing
tour of Krakow.
Krakow is one of the oldest cities in Poland. For centuries Krakow was the capital of Poland
and the major seat of Polish kings, which attracted great scholars and artists from around the
world. Today Krakow is regarded as the cultural capital of Poland- a place with
an exceptional atmosphere created by its artists.
The XXV Scientific Instruments Symposium will be held at the Jagiellonian University
Museum in the building called Collegium Maius. Most of the scientific sessions,
the welcoming reception and the registration will take place there. The official opening
ceremony will take place in Aula at Collegium Novum. Coffee and tea will be served in the
Museum. One session will be held at the Polish Aviation Museum in Krakow.
SCIENTIFIC PROGRAM
The central theme of the symposium is:
East and West: The Common European Heritage.
The evolution of science with its concomitant tools has always been greatly affected by the
prevailing political and economic situation. Many scientific discoveries emerged in the
context of historic circumstances which were seminal to intellectual life and development in
the particular region. Central Europe, pivotally situated between East and West, has had the
unique opportunity of cross cultural communication and information sharing in both
directions. Science in this part of Europe, however, drew mainly from Western influences.
PROPOSALS of the topics for the sessions of the SIC Symposium in
Krakow:
1. Scientific instruments between East and West: collaboration, transmission, trade.
2. Historical laboratories.
3. The preservation of scientific instruments heritage: research – restorationconservation.
Any other papers on a subject of interest of the participants will be accepted.
