Below is the criteria for applying to our program:
We only accept applications through ERAS: no paper applications are
accepted. We accept J-1 visas. There are only a couple of minimum
requirements: USMLE scores must be 80 and above, we look for excellence in
medical transcripts and clinical experience (experience does not have to be
in the USA, but it is preferred). Approximately three quarters of our 30
residents are foreign medical graduates. We interview many applicants to
accept approximately 7 positions for a 3 year categorical general internal
medicine residency position each year (We do not offer a preliminary year).
Applications through ERAS are accepted through January 1 each year. We make
appointments for interviews starting in the beginning of November through
the end of January each year. We do not require that foreign medical
graduates be ECFMG certified when they apply to the program, but it is
strongly recommended. If you were to match with us you MUST be ECFMG
certified to start work in our program. There are no other special
criteria. We accept any graduation year. No research experience is
necessary. We participate in the NRMP match. For 2005, we had 9 open
positions. We do not have a brochure but you may want to check out our
website for more information on our program at:

Mercy Catholic Medical Center Program
Thank you for your interest in pursuing Mercy Catholic Medical Center Internal Medicine Residency training
opportunities.
MCMC has no minimum score requirements for residency candidates. We look at all aspects of an individual’s
medical education and clinical experience, and our interview selection process is competitive. We only accept
applications through ERAS. Having completed requirements such as passage of step 3 (if interested in a H-1B
visa) tend to work in one’s favor toward being considered for an interview. Our suggestion is that if not already
addressed, you immediately sit for USMLE 2 CS as soon as possible, preferably at the Philadelphia exam site.
The program supports the pursuit of any visa type. However, the selected visa pathway must allow you to
begin training by July 1, 2006. No off cycle starts are permitted. Our heavy involvement with local medical
school students prevents us from offering observerships, and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania does not
permit IMG’s to perform clinical clerkships/externships. If you’ve graduated from medical school some time ago,
it would be in your best interest to be able to demonstrate some recent clinical experience.
For ERAS 2006, we will contact you by e-mail if our screening process has selected you to interview with us.
When you’ve submitted your ERAS application, but have not yet heard from us, this is an indication that either
1) your information has not yet been reviewed or 2) the program has elected to not schedule you for an
interview at this time.
Oakwood Hospital Program
Thank you for your interest in the Oakwood Hospital Internal Medicine Residency. We will be accepting

available on the ECFMG Home Page at www.ecfmg.org/erasinfo.htm. We are not accepting paper applications.
Please submit your information through ERAS. We will be accepting applications until December 1 or until our
interview schedule fills up.
Oakwood Hospital and Medical Center does not accept J1 visas nor do we sponsor H1B visas. You must have a
score of 195, minimally, on U.S. Medical Licensing Exam Steps 1 & 2; have graduated from medical school in
the last five years; be a U.S. citizen, permanent resident, or have an employment authorization document; and
have either medical school honors or one year of research or community service in the U.S. to be ranked by

Our training program is designed to inculcate the knowledge and skills you will need to practice internal

This experience affords excellent preparation for clinical practice.

practice management, disease prevention, behavioral medicine and the acquisition of procedural skills.

Thank you so much for inquiring about The Georgetown University Hospital/Washington Hospital Center
Internal Medicine Residency Program.
We only accept applications through ERAS. Although we have no official USMLE score cut off, applicants
should generally have passed on their first attempts, and higher scores are obviously more competitive. Our
extensive experience tells us that those who have graduated from medical school within the prior 4 years and
have had some experience with the US health care system are most likely to succeed in our program.
We sponsor both J1 and H1b visas. Further details can be discussed at the time of interview.
Given the obligations we have to medical students from the DC metropolitan area, we regret that we are unable
to offer externships/observerships to international graduates prior to the match. After the match, we only offer
such training opportunities to candidates who have matched with our program.
We wish you the best of luck in your endeavors.

INTERNAL MEDICINE
UNIVERSITY OF TENNESSEE GRADUATE SCHOOL OF MEDICINE
The University of Tennessee Graduate School of Medicine provides comprehensive primary and tertiary level
services for East Tennessee, Eastern Kentucky, Southwestern Virginia and Western North Carolina.
An Internal Medicine resident is placed in a patient-oriented highly efficient clinical environment for the
duration of the three-year residency. With such an environment, the Department of Medicine strives to develop
in the trainee the ability to set an individualized pace of professional development and to make a lifetime
commitment of personal continuing medical education. The emphasis in our program is training General
Internists.
The Primary Care months include biomedical ethics, psychiatry, and medical interviewing in the first year;
preventive medicine, clinical epidemiology, and geriatrics in the second year; and dermatology, office
gynecology, office otorhinolaryngology, and adolescent medicine in the third year. Electives are offered in all
the medical subspecialties as well as in allergy, rural health care, occupational medicine, rehabilitation medicine,
and pediatrics.
Daily conferences are conducted at the lunch hour. In addition to the usual subspecialty conferences, monthly
conferences are also held in psychiatry, sports medicine, clinical pharmacology, and health policy/medical
economics. Grand Rounds are held weekly as are ambulatory care conferences. Journal club meets twice a
month. Monthly resident meetings are also an important part of the program. Management rounds are
conducted daily, and teaching rounds occur three times weekly. Morning report is conducted three times a
week.
First year residents are on call every fourth night while in the MICU, every fifth to sixth night on Ward
Medicine, and take call every fifth to sixth night the rest of the year. Second year residents are on call every
sixth to seventh night and third year residents are on call two to three times a month, except in the MICU when
they are on call every fourth night.
The hospital also has residencies in Anesthesia, Family Medicine, Obstetrics & Gynecology, Pathology, and
27
General Surgery. We do not offer subspecialty training fellowships in Internal Medicine.
By maintaining a number of general Internal Medicine practitioners as well as a high density of subspecialists
on the staff, the Department of Medicine hopes to maintain the critical balance of close clinical care and expert
technology.
The hospital has excellent ancillary support services including PET scanning, MRI, high resolution CT,
angiography, angioplasty, and bypass surgery. For more information, contact our website at www.utmck.edu

How much scut is there at Bellevue?
During any residency program "scut" is part of the job. At NYU and at Bellevue specifically the housestaff administration has been working

What is the best aspect about this program?
The camaraderie of the house staff is palpable. Not only are your fellow house officers your colleagues, they are also friends you will retain
forever. What is the worst? The New York City housing market-though again, we are taking steps on our end to make this better. The
economy seems to be on our side here. Are house staff required to do research? House staff are not required, but are encouraged to do
research. Dr. Alan Charney has joined the residency as the research liason. He meets with all house officers interested in research and makes
it his personal mission to match the individual with a project. The residency program promises to be flexible in order to accomodate research
interests. Contact Dr. Charney via e-mail at alan.charney@med.va.gov . Are there any changes planned in the near future?
The program prides itself on adapting the program to address national changes in internal medicine. In addition, we keenly listen to our
housestaff and use their ideas to improve on what currently exists.
What is the pass rate for the IM boards?
Greater than 90% for each of the past 10 years.
What do residents do when they finish?
Essentially, whatever they choose. Residents leave the NYU program with the most sought-after fellowships and with their choices of
internal medicine jobs.
What about food?
Breakfast and lunch are provided at least twice weekly.
Are the house officers unionized? What are the benefits?
Yes. The house staff are part of the Committee of Interns and Residents (CIR). Benefits include (but are not limited to) the following: dental,
eyeglasses, disability insurance, life insurance, $500 per year in educational expenses, legal services, psychiatric services, and well-baby care.
Do you accept International medical graduates?Yes.
What are your minimum scores for USMLE, step 1? 80% or above.
How many letters of recommendation do you need? In addition to the Dean's letter, you need 3 letters of recommendation-one from the
Chairman of the Department of Internal Medicine, and 2 from faculty members (these do not have to be IM faculty members). Additional
letters are accepted.
Are there any additional requirements for International medical graduates?
IMG's must have clinical experience in the United States in the form of direct patient care. Observerships do not qualify.
Do you sponsor any visas?
Yes, we sponsor H1 and J1 visas.
How do I apply for the research track?
NYU is fully supportive of house officers with an interest in research. The research track is for house staff who are interested in research, but
not prepared to committ to the rigors of the ABIM research pathway. In the research track, residents complete their training in three years,
but are given blocks of elective time in which to complete clinical or basic science projects. Dr. Alan Charney has committed himself to
enhancing the research opportunities for house staff. If interested in the research track, it is best to state your interest early on in the intern
year. When do you begin to download applications? October 15, 2004
What is your deadline? December 31, 2004

Einstein College of Medicine and Montefiore Medical Center in the
Bronx,
New York. Please visit our Website at www.medicine-residency.org for
information about the Internal Medicine Residency Program at Montefiore
Medical Center and the different tracks we offer. Applications for each
of our tracks are considered separately and applications for July 2006
will be accepted through December 2005. Interviews will begin toward
the
end of November and are by invitation only.
We accept applications only through the Electronic Residency
Application Service (ERAS) and all of our positions are offered through
the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP).
Montefiore Medical Center sponsors J-1 and H-1 visas. For sponsorship,
you must hold valid ECFMG certification with valid expiration dates for
English and CSA, and have passed USMLE examinations. You may find
additional information on your consulate website or by contacting the
INS. You will be responsible for all visa administrative costs.
You must have taken and passed Step 1 and Step 2 of the USMLE
examination, and your results must be entered into ERAS before the
Match
deadline in order to be considered for the Match. We do not have a
minimum score requirement, however, the program is very competitive and
higher scores are more favorably considered. Potential candidates
should
have completed medical school less than five years ago and should have
some experience in a medical setting, which is structured similarly to
the healthcare system utilized in Western Medicine and/or in the United
States. We have less than 10% of International Medical Graduates in our
program. In addition, we do not offer observorships or externships in
internal medicine at Montefiore Medical Center.
Applicants will be considered for an interview on the basis of their
overall record. Again, thank you for your interest in our program.

Interfaith Medical Center Admission Policy:
The information below explains our admission policy and criteria if you decide to apply for a
residency position for the upcoming year. I think it will answer almost all your questions. If not,
send me another E-mail for further information.
For further details on our program such as salaries, etc., please check the AMA's FREIDA site
which has detailed information. You can reach FREIDA at the following WEB address:
http://www.ama-assn.org/ama/pub/category/2997.html
46
You can also reach FREIDA via the AMA's WEB site. Move your cursor over the blue box in the
upper left corner labeled "Physicians" then pick "Medical Education" from the drop down list
and then pick "FREIDA on-line" from the next list that appears.
ALL applications MUST be made via ERAS (see one of the paragraphs below for details).
We do not offer clerkships, observerships, or externships as we focus our teaching program
exclusively on our residents.
We will start accepting applications for PGY1 positions in our categorical Internal Medicine
residency training program for the academic year 2005-2006 as soon as ERAS starts
accepting applications (around 8/15/04). We will be taking 25 PGY1 residents. Our program is
not pyramidal; we have positions for all accepted residents for a full 3 years of training. We do
not offer any preliminary or transitional positions. All our residency positions are categorical
and come with the clear understanding that you are committing yourself to complete, in our
program, the full three years of residency training required for Internal Medicine in order to be
eligible to take the ABIM board exam.
About 25-35% of our graduating residents go on to fellowship programs either here
(Cardiology is a joint fellowship with our affiliated medical school SUNY-Downstate, Pulmonary,
or GI) or at outside institutions.
The current RRC/ACGME accreditation status of our Internal Medicine residency training
program is "Continuing Full Accreditation" which is the RRC's highest rating.
We screen our applicants using their USMLE Parts 1 and 2 scores and then consider for
interview only those applicants with scores >= 84 on their first exam attempts. However, we
cannot interview all candidates who meet these criteria because we receive a large number of
qualified applications. You should not apply to our program if you have failed either the USMLE
Step 1 or Step 2 exams because your application will not be considered.
You can apply even if you have taken only one (or even neither) of the USMLE exams as long
as you take the missing USMLE exam(s) in a timely fashion. However, we do not review
applications until we receive both your USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 scores. Thus, to be
interviewed in time for the NRMP match, you would probably have to complete the USMLE Step
1 and 2 exams by mid-December so the we receive the results in early to mid-January and
then if you meet our criteria, we can schedule an interview before we (and you) have to submit
our match lists (ROLIC) in mid to late February. On the positive side, we receive these scores
in a timely fashion directly from the ECFMG/NBME via ERAS usually within 3-5 weeks after you
take the test. Further, since we take residents both in the match and out of the match (both
before and after the match), we can take candidates right up to June 30th (depending on their
visa status) to start in our residency program on July 1st.
47
Our residents are primarily international medical graduates and we take both men and women
without regard to sex, race, or national origin. We do not use the year of an applicant's
graduation from medical school in our admission criteria; some of our residents are 50 or older.
Significant research experience, published papers, and advanced degrees (Masters or PhD)
are weighted positively but are not required for application to our program. We do not require
US medical experience but a working knowledge of spoken English is necessary. We have no
requirement for a minimum TOEFL score; however, we evaluate your spoken English as part of
the interview process.
The interview plays a major role in the admission process. Interviews are conducted by two
Attending Physicians or by an Attending Physician and a 4th year Chief Resident. All
applications and interviews are discussed by our Medical-Education Committee which makes
the final decision as to whether to rank an applicant for the NRMP match (or accept an
applicant pre-match or post-match).
We plan to start interviewing in September or October and will continue to interview through the
Fall and Winter. We are looking primarily for applicants with permanent residency ("green card,"
work authorization, or US citizenship). However, we do take and sponsor significant numbers
of applicants for H1 visas. We also sponsor a few applicants for J1 visas on a case-by-case
basis. We will be offering positions both pre-match and through the NRMP (the match). The
deadline for applications for candidates to be considered for the NRMP match is two weeks
before the deadline for submission of your NRMP Ranked Order List. However, the sooner you
put in your application, the better the chance you have of being interviewed. Also, we tend to
interview candidates as their ERAS applications are completed; thus, the earlier you apply, the
sooner you get an interview and the better your chance of acceptance. Lastly, if your
application does not reach us in time for us to schedule an interview before the NRMP match
deadline for submitting ranked lists, we will not be able to rank you for the NRMP match. Thus,
the sooner you apply, the better!
If you are interested in applying to Interfaith for residency, you MUST apply via ERAS
(Electronic Residency Application System) as this enables us to get all the information we need
to screen your application. Please note that USMLE transcripts are REQUIRED in order for your
ERAS application to be reviewed. USMLE transcripts can be ordered from the NBME (National
Board of Medical Examiners) who will send the transcript to ERAS who then sends it to us as
part of your ERAS application. Also, you should submit at least three recommendation letters
with your application. If possible, these letters should include letters from the Chairman of the
Department of Medicine of your medical school and the Dean of your medical school.
ERAS is sponsored by the AAMC (Association of American Medical Colleges) and you can get
information on ERAS at their WEB site (www.aamc.org). The standard ERAS application
contains all the written information we need when it includes recommendation letters, your
personal statement, and your USMLE and ECFMG transcripts.
48
You do not need an ECFMG certificate at the time of application but you do need a valid
ECFMG certificate in order to either (1) start working as a resident in the hospital or (2) enter
the NRMP match. [Note: If NRMP receives notification from the ECFMG that you have
completed your exam requirements for certification by the rank order list deadline, you will be
included in the Match. However, if you have not received ECFMG certification by the rank order
list deadline, NRMP will withdraw you from the Match.] The sooner you take and pass your
USMLE Step 3 test, the better. I recommend that you take Step 3 as soon as possible. Once
you match (because you need an institution to sponsor you), you can apply for an H-1B visa
without having passed the USMLE Step 3 exam but you can't actually receive the visa until you
pass the exam. Further, for a fee of $1,000 paid to the US government, you can have your
application handled in an expedited fashion (within 2-3 weeks). This year, everyone applying
for an H-1B visa after the NRMP match will have to apply for their H-1B visa via this expedited
pathway in order to ensure receiving their visa before July 1st and thus be able to start their
residency on time.
Opportunities exist for clinical research with the faculty members particularly in the PGY3 year
and are strongly encouraged. We have access to all patient information and to computer
software that covers a wide range of statistical procedures used to analyze clinical data.
You can apply (via ERAS) and we will review your application as soon as we receive it.
We look forward to hearing from you.
