The Woman in White (2)
I.
Review of the story
Late one night, on a lonely road, a young man, Walter Hartright, meets a
woman dressed all in white. She is in a state of confusion and distress.Walter
will take up a position as art tutor to two young women: Marian and Laura. To
his amazement, Walter finds that the story of the woman in white, Anne
Catherick, may be entangled with the lives of the two sisters. This is the
dramatic start to a strange and compelling story.
Walter falls in love with the beautiful Laura. But she is soon to be married,
by her late father's wish, to Sir Percival Glyde, a baronet. Sir Percival, however,
is only interested in Laura’s money. He also has terrible secret that the ‘Woman
in White’ knows.
The marriage is unhappy, and Marian soon realizes that Sir Percival is
attempting to gain control of Laura's fortune with the help of his Italian friend
Count Fosco. As a result, Laura is stripped of her name and money, and almost
of her sanity. The suspense mounts as Laura’s half sister, the brilliant Marian,
try to untangle the mystery and protect her sister.
With the development of the story, all the mysteries are revealed. Marian
found out that Laura's death has been faked: Anne turns out to be the half-sister
of Laura and she was buried as Laura. And Laura herself was sent to the asylum
as Anne. Meanwhile, Sir Percival’s parents were not legally married, so he is
not the rightful owner of his property or title.
In the end, Sir Percival was burned to death by the fire he sets when he
tries to destroy the evidence and Laura recovers and lives happily with the
faithful Hartright ever after.

PART ONE
Chapters 1&2
Answer the following questions.
1. Why is Walter Hartright’s meeting with the Woman in White so strange?
Because she seems to appear out of nowhere. The woman is dressed all in
white. Women are not usually out alone in a lonely park at night. The woman
wants to go to London at night. By chance, the woman knew the family in
Limmeridge that Walter is going to work for.
2. Before Walter takes the job in Limmeridge, why does he have a strange
feeling about it?
Walter thinks that perhaps even then he knew deep inside that it would
change his life forever.
3. Why is Marian poor and Laura rich?
Although they have the same mother, Marian’s father was poor, but
备 注
Laura’s father, Mr Fairlie, who is also now dead, was rich.
4. Why does Marian read through her mother’s letters?
Because she wants to find out if there is anything about the Woman in
White in them.
5. Why does Anne say she will always wear white?
Because Mrs Fairlie’s favourite colour was white and Anne Catherick was
very fond of her.
6. Why does Walter think that Anne Catherick may be the Woman in White?
Because the Woman in White wore white clothes, and her story about
Limmeridge fits with the information about Anne Catherick.
7. Why does Walter feel disturbed when he meets Laura for the first time?
Because Laura looks like the Woman in White.
Chapters 3&4
1. Answer the following questions.
(a)Why does Walter think that only the Woman in White could have written the
letter to Laura?
Because the Woman in White talked about a wicked baronet and Sir
Percival is a baronet. The description of Laura’s future husband in the letter
describes Sir Percival exactly, so the writer of the letter obviously knows Sir
Percival. Also, the writer of the letter says that Laura’s mother was her best
friend. Walter knows that Laura’s mother was very good to Anne Catherick, and
he suspects that Anne Catherick is the Woman in White.
(b)Walter manages to find the Woman in White and talk to her. What steps
does he go through in order to find her?
Walter talks to the gardener who says that the woman who gave him the
letter went in the direction of the village. No one in the village knows anything
but they visit the school and a small boy says he saw a ‘ghost’-a woman in
white-in the churchyard. Laura’s mother’s grave is there- Walter goes to the
grave and sees that it has been partially cleaned. He suspects that the Woman
in White has cleaned it and waits for her to return, which she does. They then
start talking.
(c)Why does the Woman in White write a letter to Laura?
Because she wants to warn Laura about Sir Percival and tell her not to
marry him.
(d)Why does she go to the churchyard?
To visit the grave of Mrs Fairlie, Laura’s mother.
(e)Where has she run away from and why?
She has run away from an asylum. She says she is not mad and has done
nothing wrong.
(f)Why does she hate Sir Percival Glyde?
Because he put her in the asylum.
(g)Why does she leave the churchyard so suddenly?
Because when Walter mentions Sir Percival’s name, Anne is terrified.
2. What is your opinion of the Woman in White so far? Do you think she is
mad? Give reasons for your opinion.

Chapters 5&6
1. Answer the following questions.
(a)After Walter’s meeting with Anne Catherick, Walter and Marian make
certain plans. What are these plans?
They decide to go to the farm where Anne is staying and talk to her. They
want to find out why Sir Percival shut Anne in an asylum. Marian also decides
to write to their family lawyer and explain what has happened. They agree not
to tell Laura about all this.
(b)Why is Marian unable to talk to Anne Catherick?
Because Anne left the farm when she heard that Sir Percival had arrived.
(c)How does Marian feel about Laura’s marriage to Sir Percival? Why does she
feel like this? Do you think she is right?
She doesn’t have a good feeling about it. She wants to know why Sir
Percival put Anne Catherick in the asylum.
(d)What does Mr Gilmore decide to do? Do you think he is right? Why/why
not?
He decides to show Sir Percival Anne Catherick’s letter to Laura and ask
him to explain it.
(e)By the end of Walter’s last evening at Limmeridge House, Walter knows that
Laura returns his love. How has Laura shown that she loves Walter through the
evening?
Laura is silent and unhappy at dinner. She tells Walter she is sorry he is
going, and she makes mistakes when she plays the piano. She gives him a
picture so that he will remember her, then she cries and asks him to leave her.
2. Imagine that Walter and Laura express their true feelings for each other to
each other before they part. What might they say? In pairs, act out their
conversation.

Chapters 7, 8&9
1. Answer these questions.
(a)Do you believe Sir Percy’s story about Anne Catherick? Why/why not?
Open answers
(b)Why does Laura feel she cannot break off her engagement to Sir Percival?
Because she promised her father this on his deathbed and she does not want
to break her promise.
(c)Whose fault is it that Laura and Sir Percival’s marriage takes place?
It is her uncle Mr Fairlie’s fault. He is the only person with the power to
object to the marriage settlement. But he does not, so the marriage goes ahead.
(d)Why does Mr Gilmore feel so worried about Laura’s marriage settlement?
Because it gives Sir Percival a reason to want Laura to die-he will inherit
all her money if she does.
(e)What in these chapters illustrates Mr Fairlie’s selfishness?
Mr Fairlie is only interested in peace and quiet and does not want to be
disturbed. He is not really interested in Laura’s happiness, and wants to leave
the marriage settlement as it is, even though it is obviously bad for Laura. In
chapter 9, Mr Fairlie agrees that Laura should marry Sir Percival very quickly,
even though he knows the settlement is bad. Then he says he cannot attend the
wedding because of his delicate nerves. Again, he shows that he is only
interested in himself.
2. In small groups if possible, discuss the following question. Laura’s marriage
is an ‘arranged marriage’-in other words, a marriage where the parents choose
the marriage partner for their son or daughter. What are the advantages and
disadvantages of arranged marriages?

PART THREE
CHAPTERS 1-2
1. Write an explanation of what Sir Percival and Count Fosco did to Laura,
Marian and Anne Catherick.
Count Fosco found Anne Catherick and brought her to his house. She had
a weak heart and died of heart disease, probably because she was so
frightened. Then he took Laura to his house and put something in her tea that
drugged her. While she was drugged he took her to the asylum where Anne
Catherick had been kept and told everyone that she was Anne Catherick. He
explained that Anne believed she was Lady Glyde. He also told everyone that
the dead woman, Anne Catherick, was in fact, Laura. Because they look so
similar everyone accepted this as the truth.
2. Answer these questions.
(a)How does Marian find Laura and help her escape?
When Marian learns that Anne is back in the asylum, she decides to visit
Anne and find out why she is pretending to be Laura. At the asylum, of course,
she recognizes Laura. She bribes a nurse and the nurse helps Laura escape by
taking her to meet Marian.
(b)Why are Marian and Laura living quietly in a poor part of London?
Because they are frightened that Count Fosco and Sir Percival will try and
find Laura, now they know she has escaped from the asylum. They know that the
two men would probably try to kill Laura and possibly Marian.
(c)Walter is determined to make things all right again for Laura’. What is he
determined to do?
He is determined to restore Laura to her rightful place in society and
punish Sir Percival and Count Fosco for what they did to her.

Because he knows Mrs Catherick knows Sir Percival’s dark secret. He
knows this secret could destroy Sir Percival.
(b)What kind of a woman is Mrs Catherick?
She seems hard and cold. She doesn’t seem to care about her daughter.
(c)What does Mrs Catherick tell Walter to do?
She tells him to go to the church near Blackwater Park and look at the
entry that records the marriage of Sir Percival’s parents.
(d)What is Sir Percival’s‘secret’and why is it so‘terrible’?
His parents were not married, so he is not a baronet and has no legal
rights to Blackwater Park. Also, forgery is a serious crime and Sir Percival
could be sent to prison for a long time.
(e)Why does Mrs Catherick say, ‘You can’t prove a thing’?
Because she has warned Sir Percival that Walter knows about the forgery.
She knows that Sir Percival has returned to the church and probably destroyed
the evidence.
