Immense response and early success of this voluntary initiative facilitated to form Safety Assistance For Emergencies (SAFE) as an organization aiming at helping people to avoid, prepare for, and to cope with emergencies in a sustainable way. Today, after a decade, SAFE is a well known and recognized not-for-profit organization in emergency medical response, dealing with a range of safety, health and environment issues contributing to overall safety situation in Bangladesh. MISSION Save lives by preventing injuries and deaths caused by natural calamities and unsafe practices at work and home, in schools and communities, and on the roads in a sustainable way through awareness, educational campaign, emergency response, product and service development, training and advocacy. VISION MAKING OUR BANGLADESH SAFER Safety Assistance For Emergencies (www.safe.org.bd) 3 ORGANIZATIONAL SUMMERY LEGAL ENTITY Safety Assistance For Emergencies (SAFE) is registered as a trust in 2001 under Trust Registration Act 1882 in Dhaka, Bangladesh. LOCATION AND FACILITIES The registered office of SAFE is located in Gulshan, Dhaka. The Operation Head quarter is located at Home Town Apartment near Banglamotor circle with an area of 1600 sqft The infrastructure is equipped with significant technological facilities i.e., IT solution, multimedia projector and wireless broadband internet. We believe this is an ideal location for our organization ensuring public visibility, volunteer growth and opportunities with donations and grants. ORGANIZATIONAL STRATEGY KEY STRATEGY Our key strategy is to create a common platform to work in partnership with likeminded institutions to prevention injuries and death caused by unsafe practices and natural disasters, promote safety, health and environmental issues, also helping people to avoid, prepare for, and to cope with emergencies. PURPOSE OF STRATEGY The strategy provides direction for development of SAFE’s emergency health, safety, and environment policy. Extensive stakeholder consultation further helps to develop national standards on emergency health, safety and environmental issues. Strategy also guides and facilitates to set and select priorities that are consistent with strategic goals and the revision of acceptable and appropriate standards. Safety Assistance For Emergencies (www.safe.org.bd) 4 SCOPE OF THE STRATEGY The concept of safety covers not only the absence of awareness, but also the critical relationship between the health of people and their safety. The strategy covers the health and safety at home and school, in communities, and on the roads where there is a risk of accident caused by unsafe practice. The strategy aims at a wider group including school children, worker, professional groups, researchers and teachers, governing bodies of sport and recreational organizations, educational Institutions etc. STRATEGIC ALLIANCES Strategic alliance is one of the premier strengths of the SAFE. SAFE’s main mission is to organize and promote health, safety and environmental efforts that benefit local and national level by promoting partnerships among likeminded groups and various national and international alliances. i.e. Make Roads Safe Campaign. Clean Up the World, Cleanup Bangladesh Coalition, Water Supply and Sanitation Collaborative Council (WSSCC), Freshwater Action Network, The Ocean Project, Project AWARE Foundation, Global Handwashing Day, Smart Business Initiative- Alliance. GOVERNANCE Under the legal framework, SAFE is governed, by board of trustees, highly qualified management team consisting of professionals and skilled pool of volunteers. BOARD OF TRUSTEE Board of Trustee consists of 7 members and members designated by the organization’s chartering communities. A three member Executive Committee meets more frequently, and has the authority to act on behalf of the Board; the Finance Committee meets as needed and provide recommendations to the Board. First and foremost, the Board of Trustee is responsible for advocating SAFE’s mission to the relevant stakeholders. Apart from that, the Board of Trustee also establishes broad policies contributing to planning, selection, implementation and further continuation of projects. This “hybrid” team has been and will continue to be crucial to SAFE’s success as a growing organization to create safe communities in a rapidly changing environment. STAFF & VOLUNTEER All the staffs of SAFE are highly qualified with variety of professional experiences including community mobilization, child development, health, water and sanitation, awareness campaign and training, monitoring and evaluation, research, advocacy, project design and management, product development and marketing. First aid and CPR are two outmost important areas where the volunteers and first aid responders are trained on a regular basis. AWARENESS & ADVOCACY Since its inception in 2001, SAFE has partnered with a number of responsible organizations who have helped SAFE achieve sustainable outcomes in a range of health, safety and environmental projects in Bangladesh. SAFE arranges a number of awareness campaigns (Hand wash, safe water, road safety, heat wave, earthquake safety, coastal cleanup, waste management)every year on various safety related issues in Bangladesh in partnership with various organizations or forums (Clean up Bangladesh, Make Road Safe, Bangladesh Earthquake Society, Clean Dhaka Week etc.). SAFE develops advocacy materials on safe hand wash steps, road safety (Safewalk, Keep LEFT, Switch off the mobile and Watch the Roads, fasten your seat belt while driving) safe clean up procedure and distributes at the national and local level. 2. CHILDREN FOCUS PROGRAM GLOBAL HANDWASHIG DAY Recently SAFE is working as implementing partners of private sector players and NGOs to design and implement programs as a part of Corporate Social Responsibility or Social responsibility. SAFE has worked with Better Business, a working conditions improvement initiative of Swisscontact – KATALYST in 2006 to provide first aid training to thirteen micro enterprises from four selected sectors (light engineering, electrical goods manufacturing, plastic and shoe) adopted by Rotary Club of Dhaka Mid Town as a part of their social responsibility. SAFE has successfully completed “Dettol Safe School Handwashing Campaign 2006-7 and 2008-09” with Reckitt Benckiser, one of the multinational organizations for wellknown dettol brand; to aware the students of thirty renowned schools of Dhaka City about the importance of hand wash as a part of their corporate social responsibility. Global Handwashing Day on 15th October has been launched by the Public-Private Partnership from 2008 exclusively aimed at promoting safe hand wash practices among the schoolchildren. National Handwashing Campaign, a coalition of stakeholders including Ministry of Local Government n Rural Development, Education and Health, Department of Public Health Engineering (DPHE) lead agency, BRAC, CARE, DAM, DSK, ICDDRB, MUSLIM AID, NGO FORUM, OXFAM, PLAN, PSTC, SAVE THE CHILDREN, Safety Assistance For Emergencies (www.safe.org.bd) 8 UNICEF, UNILEVER, USAID, WATER AID, WHO and SAFE is partner. Gunnies World Record of The most people washing their hands involved 52,970 participants, in an event organized by National Hand washing Campaign partners at multiple locations in eighty seven thousand schools all over Bangladesh on 15th October 2009. Project SEARCH is TERI-Tetra Pak initiative that aims to raise awareness amongst school children, teachers and parents, and the larger school community, on the issue of waste implementing it in 12 elite schools of Dhaka in partnership with SAFE. 3. CLEANUP & CLIMATE CHANGE Clean up Bangladesh campaign is a broad-based coalition, including Government Agencies, Autonomous bodies, Educational institutions, Environmental NGOs and local environmental groups/clubs. Clean up Bangladesh activities are coordinated by SAFE as a member of Clean up the World - a global environmental initiative supported by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) that attracts an estimated 35 million participants in more than 110 countries each year. SAFE in association with Clean up Bangladesh coalition partner mobilize more than 10 thousand people through out the year such as School Clean up Day, Clean Dhaka Week, World Ocean Day, Clean Up the World Weekend, International Cleanup Day with fun to remove rubbish from our environment. We’re also educating the community about the importance of waste reduction and management. Cleanup Bangladesh encourages communities, schools and businesses to organize their own Cleanup events at any time of the year to clean up and conserve their environment and this number is growing. Run for the Ocean(Cox’s Bazar Marathon) was a personal challenges to complete a Half Marathon (21.1km)/Mini Marathon (10km) took place at Cox’s Bazar on Marine Drive on 8th June 2011 on the occasion of World Oceans Day. Bangladesh Wildlife Conservation Festival was powerful awareness and conservation event to bring local and global attention to learn the impact of climate change having on the forest and wildlife and what are those impacts will mean for forest and human life, and how we can make a real difference to our forests and wildlife! Safety Assistance For Emergencies (www.safe.org.bd) 9 Tiger Run (Sundarban marathon) was a personal challenge to complete a Half Marathon (21.1km)/Mini Marathon (10km) and Fun Run/Walkathon (5km) took place beside Sundarban on the occasion of the International Year of Forest. 4. EDUCATIONAL SEMINAR AND WORKSHOP SAFE arranged seminars on road safety, environmental safety and occupational safety in collaboration with British Council in 1999. SAFE organized an awareness campaign on heat wave in 2001, first of its kind in Bangladesh. In 2004, SAFE also arranged a seminar on earthquake safety in collaboration with Bangladesh Institute of Engineering (Civil Engineering Division) and Concord Group, a renowned national construction company. 5. EMERGENCY RESPONSE SAFE was the first organization on the scene in the Bomb explosion on 14 th April (1st Baishak) at Ramna Green for significant support in emergency haulage to the nearest hospitals. After that SAFE had a successful journey till date. Also SAFE EMT reach at SIDR affected Pathorghata within 24 hours to start medical treatment for whom injured by cyclone. Simultaneously SAFE water and sanitation team restored pond for drinking water and buried animal for diseases prevention. 6. FIRST AID BOOTH AND EVENT MEDICAL SUPPORT SAFE organizes noteworthy number of projects to provide emergency first aid services to the mass during various religious gathering (i.e. Ejtema), cultural gathering (i.e. Bengali New Year) and during big national events (Victory day, Independence day, International Mother Language Day etc) in collaboration with big private sector players like ACI, Reckitt Benckiser, Ranata, Opso Saline and cultural foundation like Bengal Foundation every year. Recently SAFE has provided Emergency Medical support to a number of impactful events such as Shark Bangla Channel Crossing, a 12 kilometer swimming event from Teknaf to Sent Martins, organized by Dacca Basecamp (a known water adventure group), Bangla Marathon (Cox’s Bazar)2008 organized by Bangla Mountaineering and Safety Assistance For Emergencies (www.safe.org.bd) 10 Trekking Club (a leading mountaineering and expedition club), Challenge of the Longest Beach 2007, a 100 kilometer walkathon from TeKnaf to Cox’s Bazar organized by Gramenphone & Activate Bangladesh and Safety Fair 2007, an event sponsored by Rahimafrooz and cosponsored by Savlon-ACI, Paril Baishakhi utshob 2009 organized by Paril gram basi and BTEF, Modhumoti Art Camp 2010 an event of Bengal Foundation. Bangla Marathon 2010(Cox’s Bazar) organized by Extremist (a total fitness club). Kewkradong Trekking Challenge 2011 7. FLOOD AND POST FLOOD ACTIVITIES With support from Gazi Tank and CARE (under the project US AID funded project), SAFE distributed safe water in flood affected areas of Demra during the flood of 2004. Consequently, based on the success of this activity, SAFE undertook Tube Well Disinfected program supported by Global Heavy Chemicals Ltd. and hence created a sustainable solution for pure drinking water during the post flood disaster situation. 8. INTERNATIONAL MISSION SAFE has volunteered for a number of international emergency missions i.e. Gujrat (February 10-27, 2001), Srilanka (Jan7-Feb 7, 2004) and Kashmir (November 1121,2005) in order to be acquainted with the earth quake related emergency services so that the experience and knowledge can be applied to develop preventive measures for such instance in Bangladesh. 9. SAFETY TRAINING AND PRODUCTS Various training (First Aid, CPR training and life saving skills) is one of the specialized areas and main revenue generating activity of SAFE. Basic first aid training is given to Government Organizations (Roads & Highway department of Government of Bangladesh), Educational institutions (BUET), Donor funded projects and International NGOs (Actionaid Bangladesh, Swisscontact Katalyst, MSF-Belgium, Save the Children) and national and international companies (RMG factories). High Point Rendel Since 2000, 1720 people were trained basic first aid training. Safety Assistance For Emergencies (www.safe.org.bd) 11 SAFE has developed customized first aid kits, first aid stickers and guide for home, school, workplace and travel. SAFE strives to promote life saving skills and products, under safe school campaign, distribution of first aid kits among 30 schools in Dhaka metropolitan area that partner in safe schools network. FUND DEVELOPMENT SOURCES OF FUND SAFE relies on both corporate funds and service delivery to build, operate, and support safety program in its network. Corporate sponsorship is one of the main sources of funding for SAFE. Multi-year commitments concentrate on core operating activities rather than fund seeking. Creates and increase SAFE brand image and stability COMPETITIVE EDGE SAFE has been successfully running it under development for approximately 10 years now. SAFE designs and develops project and programs that complements rather than compete with the projects developed by national and international organizations at global, regional and national level. However, SAFE has successfully developed and implemented a number of unique and demand driven projects for various communities in Bangladesh those are exclusively solution oriented and within the reach of disadvantaged groups.
