Internship training- Institute Of Tropical Forest Conservation (Bwindi Impenetrable
National Park) From June2008 to August 2008
- Participated in collecting data from Permanent Sample Plots monitoring
community plant resource (Non Timber Forest Products) harvest in communities
around BINP.
- I also participated in collecting behavioral ecology and feeding range data for the
Kyagurilo gorilla research group
Volunteer experience
From July 2009 to January 2010, I was volunteer research assistant at ITFC in Bwindi
Impenetrable National Park (BINP) Where I carried out the following tasks:
1. Assisting with the Tropical Ecology Assessment and Monitoring project (TEAM),
in fieldwork, organizing and reporting.( Setting up permanent sample plots in
BINP, and an automated climate station)
2. Assisting ITFC staffs who require it, with computer use.
3. Summarizing student theses for website.
4. Carrying out small observation projects on African crowned eagle nests and wild
bananas.
5. Developing collaboration with local schools on conservation education

Co-coordinator of the WILD West project (Wild Life Landscapes and Development for
Conservation in Western Uganda) at ITFC. This project is funded by USAID and WCS
Job description:
1. Collection of good quality research data.(Interviews with local communities living
around protected areas)
2. Organizing, maintaining and processing data from the study.
3. Liaising with Uganda Wildlife Authority and other partners regarding problem
animals.
4. Application of participatory approaches and cross-site visits as deemed useful.
Other responsibilities include:
1. Coordinating other activities at ITFC under the WILD West project. Which
include: Coordinating studies on disease transfer between wild animals and
people around BINP and Coordinating a study on resource use in protected areas
in Uganda.
2. Reporting to funders on progress of the project.
3. Ensuring financial reporting is effective accurate and acceptable.
4. Developing publications for external technical audience

Project to study the migration patterns and feeding behavior of fruit bats in Kampala
central.
-
This study involved tracking the migration routes of fruit bats in some areas of
Kampala district and studying their feeding behavior.
Plant resource assessment and inventory in Kihunje Multiple Use Zone in BINP
-
During the project we assessed the abundance of the plants that the community
had requested for harvesting. These included medicinal plants, weaving plants and
building poles
Monitoring of the mountain gorilla feeding range and behavior of the Kyagurilo gorilla
research group.
-
This involved following the gorillas for four hours daily recording their feeding and
social behaviors.
I was also involved in the project of Sustainable harvest of forest resources in Multiple
Use zones of Bwindi.

For plant resources like a weaving liana Loeseneriella apocynoides and two
medicinal plants Rytigynia kigenziensis and Ocotea usambarensis. The communities
normally harvest
From June 2009 to January 2010 worked with the Tropical Ecology Assessment and
Monitoring (TEAM) being Implemented by ITFC in BINP.

In this project, we collected data for monitoring biodiversity (Terrestrial
vertebrates and vegetation) in BINP using standard data collection methods. This
project also involves collecting climate data.
REPORTS AND ARTICLES

Submitted a report to the Department of Wildlife Health and Resource
Management in Makerere University on the determinants of the level of
traditional plant medicine use by selected communities around BINP, Uganda.
This was submitted as my undergraduate thesis.

Submitted a report on the migration patterns and feeding behavior of fruit bats
in Kampala central to the Department of Wild life Health and Resource
Management, Makerere University.
