In His Encyclical on Divine Mercy, St. John Paul II called mercy “the second name of love” and the greatest attribute of God toward mankind. Divine Mercy can be defined in various ways: as God’s love poured out in creating, redeeming and sanctifying us; as love poured out on sinners; as love of the unlovable and forgiveness of the unforgiveable. He summoned the church to plead for God’s mercy on the whole world. MEET ST. FAUSTINA: HERALD OF DIVINE MERCY. A MYSTIC. St. Faustina was born Helen Kowalska, the third of ten children to poor parents on August 25, 1905 in a small village in Poland. At twenty she entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Mercy, where, as a humble holy hard working sister she lived the final years of her short life. She was to spend her life pleading for mercy for the world. THE MESSAGE – On February 23, 1931 St. Faustina saw a vision of Jesus with rays of mercy streaming from His Heart. Our Lord told her to have an image painted to represent this vision and to sign it JESUS, I TRUST IN YOU (this image resides in the prayer alcove at the back of the Church). In her diary, St. Faustina stated after having a vision of Our Lord, “I promise that the soul that will venerate this image will not perish”. (Diary299) In a series of revelations from 1931 – 1938 He taught her that His mercy is unlimited and available even to the greatest sinners. TRUST – Trust is more than faith in God. It includes hope which is reliance upon Jesus and His promises, as well as love. St. John Paul II developed a fuller meaning of trust, “To believe (TRUST), he says, means to abandon oneself to the truth of the word of the living God.” THE CHALET – In September 1935, God revealed to her a powerful prayer for mercy on the whole world: THE CHAPLET OF DIVINE MERCY. Said on the beads of the rosary the prayer pleads for God’s mercy on the whole world, offering Him the sacrifice of His beloved Son, Jesus Christ. The Lord asked that this special prayer be recited at the hour that recalls His death. Jesus said, “At three o’clock implore My Mercy especially for sinners.” THE DIARY AND DEEDS OF MERCY – Calling her “the Apostle and Secretary of His Mercy.” Jesus asked her to begin writing a diary so that others would come to know and trust in Him. Much of what we know of this comes to us from her diary. Her diary has reached out to the whole world. The Lord asked for works of mercy from Faustina. “I am giving you three ways of exercising mercy toward your neighbour: the first – by deed, the second – by word, the third - by prayer. In these three degrees is contained the fullness of mercy and it is an unquestionable proof of love for Me(Diary 742).
