OVERALL PURPOSE OF THE JOB: • • • • • Lecture to undergraduate and post graduate students in the Department of Chemical and Environmental Science. Attract research funding from funding agencies and industry Conduct research and develop collaborations in areas which complement research activities within the MSSI and the Bernal Project. Disseminate the research results to the academic community (through journal papers and conferences), industry partners and other relevant parties. Undertake administrative roles within the department and faculty as and when required. DESCRIPTION: The Department of Chemical & Environmental Science is one of ten departments within the Faculty of Science & Engineering. The Department offers undergraduate programmes in Pharmaceutical & Industrial Chemistry; Industrial Biochemistry; Environmental Sciences and Chemical & Biochemical Engineering. Taught post graduate programmes include: The Graduate Diploma in Chemical Engineering; and a Masters in Sustainable Resource Management. The Department also makes a significant contribution to the Education programmes including: BSc (Ed) Biological Science with Chemistry; BSc (Ed) Physical Science with Chemistry & Physics and BSc (Ed) Physical Education with Chemistry option and to the BSc programmes in Sport and Exercise Sciences and the BSc in Food and Health. In addition, the department offers postgraduate programmes by research to masters and doctorate levels in a variety of disciplines including Industrial Biochemistry. The Department now wishes to recruit a Lecturer below the bar in Electrochemistry or Bioelectrochemistry to fill a position resulting from secondment of a permanent faculty member for a specific purpose contract. This position will support the teaching and research mission of the Department and Faculty. Candidates for this post will have a primary degree in in Chemistry or Biochemistry and a doctoral degree (level 10 NFQ) in Electrochemistry, Bioelectrochemistry, Biosensors or closely related area, and have research interests which complements research within the MSSI (www.ul.ie/mssi ) and Bernal project (www.scieng.ul.ie/bernal-project ). Particular consideration will be given to candidates whose research complements existing research themes within the Department and Faculty in Electrochemistry, Biosensors or Bioelectrochemistry, Ideally candidates should have some experience of lecturing to students, knowledge of departmental teaching and research needs and be committed to teaching and research excellence. Candidates with experience of EU grant funding or participating in funding applications and postgraduate mentoring would be particularly sought. The successful candidate will be expected to complement the department’s research objectives, work independently and develop a collaborative research program and be active in seeking external funding. The candidate will be expected to mentor and supervise/co-supervise postgraduate and undergraduate research students. Job description Essential qualifications: Candidates will have a BSc in Chemistry or Biochemistry. Candidates will have a doctoral degree (level 10 NFQ) in Electrochemistry, Bioelectrochemistry or closely related area. Candidates should identify collaborative opportunities within the department and the University to aid transition into the post. The candidate will have a record of research productivity and a clear research agenda commensurate to experience with collaborative opportunities identified within the University. Candidates will have relevant experience of teaching at third level or equivalent and be committed to teaching excellence. Desirable qualifications: Undergraduate and/or taught postgraduate teaching experience in the areas of chemistry, biochemistry and analytical science or closely related areas. Ability to attract research funding and manage research and education projects. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and capable of working within a dynamic team. Good communication skills and flexibility in participating in promotional activities in an active student friendly department. Participate in other relevant duties commensurate with the grade of the post as may be assigned by the Head of the Department. PRINCIPAL DUTIES: The successful candidate will be required to contribute to the delivery and organisation of teaching their subject within the Department of Chemical & Environmental Science, both at undergraduate and postgraduate levels and to develop a research programme, develop collaborations and initiate a research programme which complements existing research themes within the Department and Faculty.
