Major completed studies
In 1988-89 I was involved in the establishment of one of the first oocyte donation
clinics for the treatment of prematurely menopausal women in The United
Kingdom a number of significant publications and innovations in patient care
and treatment arose from this initiative.
During this time I was also involved in research work at The Lister Fertility and
endocrinology centre in London where we conducted original research into the
effects of subcutaneous estradiol and testosterone implants on menopausal
symptoms, bone density and the pre menstrual syndrome.
Between 1990 -1995 I was a principal investigator and responsible for the second
largest number of enrollments in the first major phase III trial conducted in
Australia to examine the effects of a combined continuous regimen of post
menopausal hormone therapy on bone density, lipids, menopausal symptoms and
quality of life.
Several papers published in peer reviewed journals arose from this work and the
published findings have significantly affected Australian clinical practice.
Between 1992-1994 I was a principal investigator in a similar randomized double
blind placebo controlled trial examining the effects of a regimen of con jugated
estrogens and progestins on bone density and serum lipids in post menopausal
Australian women
7
In the mid 1990s we were the first Australian centre to participate in Phase II
randomized clinical trials of the safety and efficacy of transdermal patches
containing estrogen and progestin for the treatment of menopausal symptoms.
In 1998 I conducted the first Australian trial examining the effects of long term
estradiol implants on menopausal symptoms and biochemical markers of wellbeing as well as the phenomenon known as tachyphylaxis. Our published findings
have been utilized in Australian guidelines on current best practice in the use of
implants and other forms of hormone replacement therapy
In 1999 I conducted the first Australian randomized cross over trial of the effects
of a dietary supplement of red clover phytoestrogens on menopausal symptoms in
post menopausal women. The findings of this trial are still often referred to by
other researchers and as a guide to clinical practice
