October 31, 2007 TO: Mark Schneiderhan, Chair Senate Committee on Educational Policy FROM: Midge Grosch Director, Programs and Academic Assessment I am forwarding for review and action by the Senate Committee on Educational Policy the attached Revision of the Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Arts and Sciences - Major in Psychology, Concentrations in Applied and General Psychology; Major in Psychology with Distinction and High Distinction. The proposal was approved by the College of LAS Educational Policy Committee on September 10, 2007 and the LAS faculty on October 16, 2007. Attachment Cc: V. Tunnicliff B. Bottoms 1 Revised on 11/9/07 Title: Revision of the Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Arts and Sciences, Major in Psychology Concentration in Applied Psychology Concentration in General Psychology Major in Psychology (General or Applied) with Distinction and High Distinction Sponsor: Department of Psychology College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Description: Psychology is the science of human behavior, yet UIC students can graduate with a B.A. in General Psychology without ever having performed a study to observe and/or evaluate human behavior. This change to the General Major in psychology solves this serious problem, makes it easier for students to meet the Writing-in-the-Discipline (WID) requirement, and delivers higher quality writing training. Specifically, students in the General Major will be required to take one of 7 existing laboratory courses (PSCH 313, 321, 331, 351, 353, 361, 363). For the first time, small modifications will allow these courses to meet the Writing-in-the-Discipline requirement. The course that currently fulfills the WID requirement, PSCH 303 (Writing in Psychology, 3 credits), will no longer be required and will be phased out. Most of the laboratory courses already meet the WID requirements, and those that do not will be revised to include the necessary writing and revision components to meet the WID requirements. Also proposed is a change in the credit hours of the laboratory courses from the current 2 credit hours to 3 credit hours to reflect the current workload more accurately (except 331, which is already 3 credit hours). Students in the Applied Major will not be required to take a laboratory course, because human behavior evaluation takes place in PSCH 385 (Fieldwork in Psychology, 3 credits), the required capstone course for the Applied major. We will revise PSCH 385 to meet the Writing-in-the-Discipline requirement so that the Applied Majors, like the General Majors, will no longer have to take the course that currently fulfills the Writing-in-the-Discipline (WID) requirement, PSCH 303 (Writing in Psychology, 3 credits). The only additional change to the majors is for those students graduating with Departmental Distinction or High Departmental Distinction: PSCH 399 (Independent Study), if taken for 3 credit hours, will be allowed to substitute for one of the two required laboratory courses required for distinction. The total number of credit hours needed to graduate with the General Psychology Major (27) or the Applied Psychology Major (36) will not change. Specific listing of changes: 1. Eliminate: PSCH 303 (Writing in Psychology, 3 cr. hrs.) will no longer be required and will be phased out over next 3 years as demand dwindles and alternatives, below, are offered. 2. Students in the General Psychology Major will be required to take one of the 7 existing laboratory courses to meet the Writing-in-the-Discipline requirement: PSCH 313 (Laboratory in Social Psychology, 3 cr. hrs.) PSCH 321 (Laboratory in Developmental Psychology, 3 cr. hrs.) PSCH 331 (Laboratory in Community and Prevention Research, 3 cr. hrs.) PSCH 351 (Laboratory in Perception, 3 cr. hrs.) PSCH 353 (Laboratory in Cognition and Memory, 3 cr. hrs.) PSCH 361 (Laboratory in Learning and Conditioning, 3 cr. hrs.) PSCH 363 (Laboratory in Physiological Psychology, 3 cr. hrs.) 3. All of these 7 laboratory courses will be increased from 2 credit hours to 3 credit hours, with the exception of 331, which is already 3 credits. Note: The Neuroscience major includes three Psychology courses on a selective list of six lab courses. The program director has been notified of the change in credit hours for the courses. The addition of one hour of credit to the Psychology labs will not significantly influence the Neuroscience major, as the other three courses on the list are either 3 or 4 credit hours. See attached correspondence. 2 4. PSCH 385 (Fieldwork in Applied Psychology, 3 credits), which is the required capstone course for the Applied Psychology major, will be revised to meet the Writing-in-the-Discipline requirement for the Applied Psychology major. 5. PSCH 399 (Independent Study), if taken for 3 credit hours, can substitute for one of the two required laboratory courses required for Distinction and High Distinction. 6. The catalog statement for High Departmental Distinction has been modified to reflect the fact that PSCH 399 (Independent Study) taken for distinction must be 3 credit hours. Justification of changes as numbered above: 1. Eliminating PSCH 303, the class that currently meets the WID requirement, solves the problem that in PSCH 303, students’ writing is divorced from original data. Currently in 303, students review literature and propose and justify hypotheses without relying on their own interpretation of data, which is not the way psychologists actually write or conduct their work. Data and argument are inextricably linked in the actual science of psychology. This link is made in the laboratory courses (and in Psych 385), making them more intrinsically interesting for students and faculty than PSCH 303 has ever been. 2. Allowing students to select from several lab courses makes more sense as a delivery system for WID training. That is, WID is more effectively taught as part of the laboratory courses than as it is taught now in 303, because in the lab courses, students already write a great deal, they get a lot of specific feedback, and the writing is completely in context. That is, they write reports of individual research in precise American Psychological Association style. Requiring one laboratory course, which is restricted to 20 students, will also ensure that students have at least one experience of close interaction with faculty in the classroom. Finally, this change will also make for a better, more natural method of assessment of our General Majors. We will be able to compare individual students’ papers from PSCH 242, our entry-level research methods course, to their products in the laboratory courses, to evaluate improvement in writing, logical thinking, and knowledge of and ability to use psychological theories and concepts. Most of the laboratory courses already meet the WID requirements, and those that do not will be revised to include the necessary writing and revision. Note that, for the general major, the lab course used to meet the WID requirement cannot also count as one of the two selectives listed beneath it in the catalog statement. However, we will leave the lab courses in those lists of selectives in case students want to take a second lab and count it toward the selectives. 3. Increasing the credits from 2 to 3 for all laboratory courses (except 331 which is already 3 credits) will give students the appropriate credit for the current workload in lab courses. Specifically, the lab classes meet 4 hours per week, with at least 2 hours of lecture/direct instruction and 2 hours devoted to laboratory activities on average per week. By university policy, pure lab courses receive 1 credit hour per every 2 hours of class time. 4. PSCH 385 revision: This is a capstone course that provides direct exposure to the methods used to observe and evaluate individuals in a community setting as well as methods for evaluating community agencies and programs. This provides a community-based equivalent of the laboratory courses required for the General major in Psychology. Students already complete a paper in PSCH 385 that fulfils the Writing-in-the-Discipline requirement except that they are not required to revise the paper. With additional TA support, we will be able to provide greater feedback and grading of a first draft and a revision. This will meet the WID requirement. 5. PSCH 399 substitution for one lab course: PSCH 399 is in essence a more individualized version of the laboratory classes. It is graded rather than being Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory as is PSCH 396 (Directed Research). Under the constant supervision of a faculty member, students design and conduct a study, analyze the data, and report the results in an APA-style paper. There is extensive feedback and mentoring throughout the process. A positive by-product of this change is that it should 3 Revised on 11/9/07 allow significantly more students to graduate with high distinction, because many students each year meet all requirements except lab courses. 6. Putting in the catalog that PSCH 399 (Independent Study) taken for distinction must be 3 credit hours simply corrects an oversight. In practice, this was always the case, but it was missing from the catalog copy. Minority Impact Statement: No negative impact on minorities. Budgetary and Staff Implications: None. The extra teaching assistants needed to do some extra grading in the lab courses and in PSCH 385 will be covered by the phasing out of the TA-intensive Psch 303 course. Library Resource Implications: None Space Implications: None Unit approval date: May 4, 2007 College (Educational Policy Committee, faculty) Approval Dates: LAS EPC: September 10, 2007 LAS Faculty: October 16, 2007 Faculty Contact Person: Professor Bette L.
