Activities: Opportunities to see patients with Attending Physicians M-F, 8-10
clinics per week. Participate in Weekly Clinical Conference with Division.
Most weeks there will also be a chance to evaluate pediatric patients entered
in clinical trials.
Description of Program:
Student may elect a clinical clerkship in Pediatric Rheumatic diseases during a one month elective. This involves
attendance at clinics. Our patients include those with Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA) and inflammatory eye
disease associated with JIA, Systemic Lupus Erythematosus, Juvenile Dermatomyositis, Juvenile
Spondyloarthropathies, other connective tissue disorders, Systemic Vasculitides, Raynaud’s Phenomenon, Lyme
disease, periodic fever syndromes and amplified pain syndromes.
The student will learn to evaluate the major laboratory tests used in the diagnosis and management of patients with
arthritis and connective tissue diseases and learn the special considerations of these disorders and their implications
in a growing child. The student will be exposed to the elements involved with caring for a child with chronic
disease.
The student will be expected to give a 20-30 minute presentation to the Division of Pediatric Rheumatology at the
end of the rotation.
Description of Patient Population:
Children with: Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA) and inflammatory eye disease associated with JIA, Systemic Lupus
Erythematosus, Juvenile Dermatomyositis, Juvenile Spondyloarthropathies, other connective tissue disorders,
Systemic Vasculitides, Raynaud’s Phenomenon, Lyme disease, periodic fever syndromes and amplified pain
syndromes.
.Supervision:
Faculty of Division, 30-40 hours of direct supervision in clinics each week.
Evaluation:
Presentation of a 30 minute topic at end of elective, direct supervision in clinic, discussion among faculty of student
performance – physical exam, history taking, ability to put information together, interaction with patients, etc.
