TB Macaulay Fellowship in Ecogenomics

Main purpose of
job:
To lead the development of the Ecogenomics Initiative at the James Hutton Institute, a
multidisciplinary group of researchers with interests in using genomic and other highthroughput approaches to understand ecosystems and the environment.
To coordinate and direct the work of the Ecogenomics Initiative.
To develop an independent research portfolio in the area of Ecogenomics by attracting
external funding.
Main duties of
postholder:
Leadership and coordination of the Ecogenomics Initiative at the James Hutton
Institute.
Research in bioinformatics aspects of metagenomics involving as appropriate new
methodologies or the data mining of high-throughput sequencing data sets.
The identification of training requirements for staff involved in metagenomics research.
Interaction with researchers involved in comparable research in Institutes and
Universities in the UK, Europe and further afield.

Attainments:
Education /
qualifications
Experience:
PhD in Mathematics, Computational
Biology, Molecular Biology/Ecology or
another relevant subject
Management of bioinformatics research
projects, project tracking, and
experimental design
Experience with molecular biology
technologies.
Experience in statistical analysis of high
throughput biological data using R and
other related software packages
Experience in data integration, database
construction, application development
and visualization.
Demonstrable ability to attract external
funding through competitive grant
application
Demonstrable ability to publish original
research and reviews in high impact
journals
Skills:
Excellent and up-to-date skills in
processing and quantitative analysis of
biological next generation sequence data
and other high-throughput datasets,
including integration with data available
from public sources
Linux experience
Experience of building and maintaining
automated data and process
management systems for high throughput
datasets, including genomics
Database design and development.
Up-to-date familiarity with commercial
and open-source bioinformatics and
genomics analysis software
Excellent communication and relationship
skills.
Appropriate scripting and /or
programming experience.
