Thomas C. Rumble University Graduate Fellowship
AWARD

Non-service award sponsored by the Wayne State Graduate School

The Department of Anthropology awards 1 (recruiting or competitive) Rumble Graduate Fellowship.

Only Ph.D. students who have never attended WSU are eligible for a recruiting award, which include a
commitment of two or more years additional support

Up to 3 of the remaining applicants may be submitted (by the department) as candidates for the universitywide competition for 7 additional Rumble Graduate Fellowships

Stipend of $14,000 for the academic year (August through May)

Tuition scholarship that provides payment of the entire assessment for up to 12 graduate credit hours (that are
or expected to be on the student’s Plan of Work) for each of the fall and winter semesters

Subsidized medical and dental insurance for twelve months (September through August) valued at $4,673

Annual housing subsidy of $2,569 disbursed bi-weekly with the stipend check (August-May)
ELIGIBILITY

Full time doctoral student enrolled in the Department of Anthropology

Awarded primarily on the basis of academic qualifications to eligible graduate students with clearly defined
objectives in their field of scholarship and demonstrated capacity for independent study

3.5 overall Grade Point Average (GPA) minimum

May not simultaneously hold a graduate assistantships, other fellowships, internships, traineeships,
scholarships

May not simultaneously be a salaried employee (in or out of Wayne State University)

The scholarship only pays for credits that are or are expected to be on the student’s Plan of Work for each of
the fall and winter semesters

A student may be awarded the Thomas C. Rumble University Graduate Scholarship for up to two years,
however, renewal is not automatic

Students who reapply are considered on the same basis as new applicants for any given year
Graduate Teaching Assistantships
AWARD

Made for one, two or three semesters of the calendar year

Salary is determined by the department, and must be at least equal to the Discipline Category minimum listed
in the WSU Compensation Schedule

Tuition scholarship pays for up to ten graduate credits for each of the fall and winter semesters and up to two
graduate credits for the spring/summer semester appointment

Tuition scholarship. The scholarship only pays for graduate credits listed on a student’s Plan or Work.

Option of subsidized medical, dental and vision insurance

Approximately 20 hours of service per week, over the course of a semester

Graduate Teaching Assistants may be assigned approximately 20 hours of instructional service per week over
the course of a semester (8 credit hours as instructor of record or 12 hours of laboratory supervision or 3
discussion section administration). Teaching duties may include grading, instruction in undergraduate level
courses or related laboratories or discussion sections, or instructors of record for undergraduate courses


ELIGIBILITY

Graduate Teaching Assistants (GTAs) must be full-time doctoral students enrolled in the Department of
Anthropology

Award is for 1 academic year only; applicants can reapply on a yearly basis

Maximum 3 GPA appointments of 1 year each (3 years total)

Preference given to MA in Anthropology

Must be in good academic standing, with a minimum 3.5 overall Grade Point Average (GPA)

Must be enrolled for a minimum number of 6 graduate credits each per fall and winter semester appointments
and one graduate credit for a spring/summer appointment

The scholarship only pays for graduate credits listed on a student’s Plan or Work
Graduate Student Housing

Awarded only to one successful applicant for GTAship

Plan of Work (current and approved)

GTA applicants only: Student Evaluation of Teaching (previous 3 years)
