Victor Jordan Rozwadowski’s life, and history of his descendants.
I would like today to introduce Victor Rozwadowski, the youngest son of Tomisław, and his
descendants. Firstly however, I would like to say something about his father who started the Honiatyń line.
He was the oldest son of Victor-Leander and Emilia Szymanowska. His brothers were; Tadeusz,
Bartłomiej and Franciszek.
Tomisław was born in 1841 in Rożyska, he passed away in 1920, and is buried in Babin. His primary
education was started in Lwów. His military education was provided in Hanisburg, Kraków-Lobzow, and in
Wiener Neustadt, His education was interrupted due to the war in 1856 between Austria and Italy. The cost of
his soldier’s equipment was borne by Rozwadowski and Obertyński family. He participated in the Soferino
battle.
Due to the Austrian government repressions Tomisław’s father sold estate the Rożyska estate to Kazimierz
Grocholski. In the middle of nineteenth century the Babin estate was bought from Golejewski family, and since
that time it’s the main residence of Rozwadowski family. After his father dead, Tomisław began to live there,
and ran the estate.
In 1865 Tomisław married Melania Rulikowska, and soon their sons Tadeusz, Samuel and Victor were
born in Babin. A few years later he with his brothers shared among themselves all the estates they owned, and
finally Tomisław bought Honiatyń and Oszczów from his wife’s family. These estates were in the Russian
sector of partitioned Poland. Honiatyń was situated near the Russia and Austrian borders. He managed these
estates very well. He and his family spent a lot of time there, however they still held the Austrian citizenship
He helped the Greco-catholic people who were repressed by the Russian government due to their religious
belief to enter illegally in Austrian sector of partitioned Poland. As a result of this illegal activity Tomisław and
his family were expelled from the sector of partitioned Poland by Russia, and his estates were confiscated.
Being very open minded person, who spoke fluently in the main European languages, he was at first a member
of Parliament in Lwów from the Sokal area, and later on, to the state Council in Vienna. He participated in
several duels due to his impetuous character. He also inherited the fondness of risk of hazard from the ancestors
on his mother’s side. Due his political activity as a Member of the State Parliament he visited Vienna very often,
and because of his hopes to recover losses due to his estates confiscated in Russia he played in the Jokey Club.
One time at play when he lost a large sum of money, he had sold the rest of his property to pay his debts, and
thus his political career was ended.
Tomisław’s oldest son - Tadeusz – the General – the history of his life and activity is well known and
described in detail by Mr. M. Patelski.
The middle son – Samuel – the professional soldier – he and his descendants’ history were
introduced by Christine and Ernie in 2009.
The youngest son – Victor, my grandfather, had his primary education in Lwów next in MarishWiesenkirchen, and after that he graduated from Technical Soldiers’ Academy in Vienna. Later on, he
graduated from the Equestrian School. In 1896 he married Anna, Baronesse von Seckendorf-Gudend. He,
as a professional soldier was transferred to Varazdyn in Croatia where he stayed in a garrison until 1902.
Between 1902 – 1906 he and his brother Samuel were in service in Brody.
In 1906 according to the last will of Baronet Czechowicz and his wife, related to the Komorowski and
the Rulikowski families Victor and his brothers inherited estates; Glinna, Złoczówka, Karpiniec,
Chorobrów and Chorościec. Brothers shared the inherited estates, Victor took over Glinna, paid off the
Samuel’s part, and assured his father’s annuity. He resigned from the army, and began to run the estate.
4
In nineteenth century Glinna near Zborów was a famous among European antiques’ lovers because of
its round salon. In its corners were placed very rich carved cupboards from “cabinet de travail” of Ludwig
XVI King of France. These cupboards were bought in Paris just after France Revolution, and were brought
to Glinna by Count Komorowski who was the owner of Glinna at this estate at the time. At the end of
nineteenth century baronet Czechowicz sold them, to Mr. Boni de Castelane who was married to an
American millionaires from the Gould family.
When the WW1 started, Victor was called back to the army, to run the hospital for wounded horses. In
1914 Glinna was destroyed. Anna with her three daughters and son Edward escaped to Lwów thus saving
their lives. Later, Victor rebuild the estates, but in 1918 while Soviet Army attacked Polish eastern
territory and in the area of Lwów, Glinna was completely destroyed again. In 1920 his older son Antoni
died. Victor decided to retire from the army, the Glinna’s land was sold to the government for subdivision,
and he bought a villa w Lwów in Poniński Street.*/
In 1929 Victor with his son Edward went to Mexico where he bought a piece of land, which had
probable the oil-bearing potential. He left his son Edward in Mexico. When he returned to Lwów, he
received the information that Edward had died there. In the span of ten years Victor lost two sons.
In 1961 his grandson Roman Grocholski received from the former ambassador of Poland to Mexico
the information regarding this transaction, and he began to investigate mattes further. He discovered that
Mexican law states that if taxes are not paid on property for a period of thirty years, the government has
the right to take the ownership. It turned out to be oil-bearing land, but unfortunately, 31 years had passed
from the transaction’s date.
Living in Lwów, Victor was very involved in the family genealogy. He looked for family documents
in multiple archives, and he collected them avidly. He co-operated close in this matter with Adam
Rozwadowski by sending him his discoveries.
In 1940 when the Soviet Army conquered Lwów, Victor with his wife Anna, daughter Zofia
Grocholska, and his grandson Roman were deported to the East of Soviets. Anna, Zofia and Roman were
found themselves in Kustanay in Kazakhstan. Victor was separated from his family. In 1994 his name was
found on the newly relased lists of victims murdered by Soviets in Katyń/Starobielsk in 1940 alongside
with Jan Władysław Rozwadowski, colonel (from the Tuchów line).**/ The large family archives
collected by his grandfather Victor Leander, his father Tomisław and himself were destroyed and forever
lost.
His wife Anna died in Kustanay,Kazakhstan in 1943.
*/ Later on, he sold this home in course to help his brother Tadeusz to help him to fulfill his financial
obligation.
**/ Victor was honored by Virttuti Militari among other victim murdered in Katyn , and other unkown
places in 1976 – by Kazimierz Sabbath – the President of Poland on Exile.
