Phonics Definitions :
Vowel = A, E, I, O, U, and sometimes Y
Split digraph = A digraph that is split by another letter e.g. toe / tone
Polysyllabic words = Words with two or more sylllables
Segmenting = Breaking up a word into its phonemes to help with spelling
CVC word = A word with a consonant phoneme, a vowel phoneme and a consonant phoneme
Mnemonic = A rhyme for remembering something
GPC = Grapheme phoneme correspondence i.e. the letters used to represent a sound
Alliteration = Words with the same initial sound
Morpheme = The smallest unit of meaning
Digraph = Two letters making one sound
Suffix = A morpheme that can be put at the end of a word
Consonant = All the letters, except a, e, I, o, u and sometimes y
Prefix = A morpheme that can be put at the beginning of a word
Root word/ base word = A morpheme that prefixes or suffixes can be added to
Encode = Translating spoken sounds into written sounds i.e. spelling
Compound word = A word made up from two other words
Trigraph = Three letters making one sound
Decode = Translating written sounds into spoken sounds i.e. reading
Blending = Putting sounds together to make a word when reading
Rhyme = Words with the same ending but not necessarily spelled the same way
Phoneme = The smallest unit of sound
Grapheme = The letters used to represent a sound
Syllable = A ‘chunk’ in a word including one vowel phoneme and one or more consonants
