Five ways to stay healthy this winter. Eliminate your sleep debt. On average we sleep 6.5 hours a night, much less than the 7-9 hours recommended. During the winter months it is normal to adopt a hibernating habit so take advantage. Drink more milk. You are 80% more likely to get a cold in winter so make sure your immune system is in tip top condition. Milk and dairy products are a great source of protein and vitamins. Go for semiskimmed/skimmed milk & low fat yoghurt. Eat more fruit & vegetables When it’s cold outside it is tempting to fill up on unhealthy snacks. It is important to adopt a healthy diet which includes five portions of fruit and veg a day. If you are craving sugary treats try dried fruit, (dates, raisins) or clementines and satsumas instead. Try new activities for the whole family. Don’t use the cold winter months as an excuse to stay in and lounge around. Consider activities such as ice skating, taking a brisk walk or nature trail. Have a healthy breakfast. Winter is the perfect season for porridge. Eating a warm bowlful on a cold day is the perfect way to start your day. It helps to boost your intake of starchy foods and fibre, which gives you energy and helps you to feel fuller for longer stopping temptation to snack mid morning. www.NHSchoices.co.uk.
