cancer selling cakes and books during our
flu clinics on 8th and 22nd October, 2011.
The Health Visitor is at the surgery
every Tuesday from 1.15pm – 2.45 pm
for advice and baby weighing. Drop in
- no appointment needed
FLU VACCINES : Available to all over
65s and under 65s who are at risk. If
you are due your annual review in
November or December (Diabetes, Asthma,
COPD, CHD, Stroke) the Practice Nurse will
be happy to give a flu injection at the same
time.
There has been a high rate of non
attenders in the smoking clinic. If this
continues we may have to consider
stopping this service so please attend
or let us know if you are unable to
make your appointment.
CONGRATULATIONS
Congratulations to Leanne, our Prescription
Clerk, who is expecting her second baby in
April. Our Secretary Denise Wilson has just
turned 60 and one of our Receptionists,
Jackie Moorhouse, turned 65 in October.
Well done to Emma Ball, practice nurse,
who raised £171 for Rochdale Hospice by
doing the midnight walk on the 23rd
September and, finally, well done to Dr Jiva
who did a 10k run on the 9th October (took
him until the 12th to finish!)
New services available
Emma our Practice Nurse would appreciate
any patient feedback on the newly
developed INR clinic. We have recently
started offering a new service for women
who require a ring pessary fitting. We
have also started offering NHS health
checks to men and women between the
ages of 40 and 74. If you are a smoker or
have smoked in the last 10 years with no
underlying illness you will qualify for this
health check.
Please ask at reception or
ring to book an appointment.
Children’s services
There will be a new ill children’s clinic every
Monday.
Appointments
are
available
between 12.00 and 1.00 pm. Please ring
for an appointment before 10.30am on the
day.
Five ways to stay healthy this winter.
Eliminate your sleep debt. On average
we sleep 6.5 hours a night, much less than
the 7-9 hours recommended. During the
winter months it is normal to adopt a
hibernating habit so take advantage.
Drink more milk.
You are 80% more
likely to get a cold in winter so make sure
your immune system is in tip top condition.
Milk and dairy products are a great source
of protein and vitamins. Go for semiskimmed/skimmed milk & low fat yoghurt.
Eat more fruit & vegetables When it’s
cold outside it is tempting to fill up on
unhealthy snacks. It is important to adopt a
healthy diet which includes five portions of
fruit and veg a day. If you are craving
sugary treats try dried fruit, (dates, raisins)
or clementines and satsumas instead.
Try new activities for the whole family.
Don’t use the cold winter months as an
excuse to stay in and lounge around.
Consider activities such as ice skating,
taking a brisk walk or nature trail.
Have a healthy breakfast. Winter is the
perfect season for porridge. Eating a warm
bowlful on a cold day is the perfect way to
start your day. It helps to boost your intake
of starchy foods and fibre, which gives you
energy and helps you to feel fuller for
longer stopping temptation to snack mid
morning.
