NAPIRE PROGRAM
NATIVE AMERICAN AND PACIFIC ISLANDER RESEARCH EXPERIENCES (NAPIRE) PROGRAM Summer 20
Which one do you prefer? (both can be accommodated)
You already have an idea you would like to research, thus you would like to develop your own individual research
project from conception to presentation while guided by a scientific research mentor.
You wish to participate with an important piece of an on-going research question, whereby you would design the data
collection in a collaborative group including your scientific research mentor, then be the one responsible for collecting
the data, analyzing and presenting the results.
You will be assigned to a research mentor when we know more about your preferences for your summer research
experience. Upon acceptance to the program you will be assigned to a Scientific Research Mentor who will guide you
through your summer research. At that time, (mid-March) you will be asked to contact them to begin building your research
idea. This can be via email, telephone, Skype or other mechanisms. If you have not already contacted your research mentor,
we will do so during the Home Mentor workshop in April. This is a workshop where we invite your home mentor to Costa
Rica, and communicate them with your research mentor and yourselves.
Home Mentor: Is there someone at your college with whom you can share your career dreams? Someone in the
administration, counseling, or the faculty contacts that you have who you feel comfortable with, and who has impacted your
career? The home mentor should be someone who has time to support your efforts at applying, and to help you organize to
participate if you are accepted. This person does not need to be a professor. It is important that you feel comfortable talking
about your career goals with them. Many school LSAMP program managers have been home mentors in past NAPIRE
programs. Also, in the past we have had school advisory personnel as home mentors. The home mentor is asked to support
the students after they return by facilitating opportunities to present the summer’s research. They should help the student
integrate the experience into their career track.
List the on-campus Mentor who will support your participation in the NAPIRE Program:
