Programme Objective
This programme has been designed to respond to some needs and social concerns
prevalent in Sri Lanka. Some of these may be dealt with at an individual level whereas
others would require family or community emphasis/outlook.
Postgraduate Diploma
The objective of the Postgraduate Diploma is to equip students with skills to design and manage a basic psychosocial
intervention or programme and to critically assess the impact of these. At an individual level, on completion of the
programme, students will be able to provide interpersonal support for psychosocial problems while engaging in basic
self-care and maintaining ethical professional conduct. Students will be able to apply assessment, planning and
intervention skills in relation to both interpersonal (ie. counselling) work as well as community or systems level
responses to prevent or mitigate the effects of problems.
Admission requirements for Postgraduate Diploma
Degree from a recognized university/ Institution in a field relevant to the subject matter/s of the postgraduate
diploma.
or
Any other Degree/ with one years’ work experience relevant to the subject matter of the postgraduate diploma.
or
Professional qualification from a recognized professional body acceptable to the Faculty Board of the FGS with one
years’ work experience relevant for the subject matter of the postgraduate Diploma.
or
Any other Diploma from a recognized University/ Institution or an equivalent qualification so recognized by the FGS
with three years’ work experience relevant to the subject matters of the Postgraduate Diplomas.
or
Minimum of eight years sustained work experience in recognized institutions or work places with strong
recommendation on the capacity of the candidate to undertake the programme from the Head of the institution
where the candidate works which is considered on case by case basis by the FGS on the recommendation of the
relevant Board of Study and the Faculty Board of the Faculty of Graduate Studies.

Perform satisfactory at an examination and/ or an interview to be conducted by the Faculty of Graduate Studies.
Have a good working knowledge of English.

Placement Report
The programme involves attending lectures, practical work and supervision (of placement activities/report writing)
sessions in altogether 7 units. The placement unit includes undertaking supervised field placement at a related work
setting, attending seminars and submitting a report
Masters
The objective of the Masters programme is to further enhance students’ skills to design and manage psychosocial
interventions or programmes, critically assess and systematically measure their impacts and analyse the conceptual
bases of interventions and the practical implications of these. They will also be able to critically appraise competing
theoretical models in the field, deliver training and provide psycho-education. Additionally, students will be
competent to provide interpersonal support for a range of psychosocial problems and provide referrals while also
engaging in basic self-care and maintain ethical professional conduct.
Both programmes are interdisciplinary embracing insights from politics, sociology, anthropology and psychology.
They will enable students to obtain practical experience, to enhance personal growth and to be absorbed into
governmental, non-governmental or private organizations.
The Postgraduate Diploma will allow less academically oriented students to gain a sufficient level of proficiency for
practice in the field. The Masters allows students to achieve greater academic and professional standards.

Systems of Evaluation for both programmes
For the Postgraduate Diploma and the Masters during each semester, each unit shall be evaluated. Different systems
of evaluation shall be used: term assignments, practical assessments, personal and professional development journals,
written examinations, practice development records and presentations.
Lectures shall be held on week days (1 or 2 days) in the evening and on Saturday mornings.
