Main purpose of job:
Chest Heart & Stroke Scotland improves the quality of life for people in Scotland affected by
chest, heart and stroke illness, through medical research, influencing public policy, advice
and information, and support in the community.
The aim of the Clinic Stroke Nurse is to support patients who receive a new diagnosis of
Stroke/TIA via the Stroke Clinics at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, through the provision of
information, advice & support. The patient’s family will also be supported.
Most challenging aspects of the job:
Managing & administering nurse-led clinics, & managing a diverse caseload in a
geographically widespread area.
Maintaining a high level of skills and knowledge in the developing environment of stroke
management
The holder of this position will have unsupervised one to one contact as part of their
normal duties with adults at risk; therefore this position is subject to a Protection of
Vulnerable Groups check.

Key responsibilities:
Individual
To follow up clinic patients and their families after diagnosis with new Stroke/TIA. To provide
information, advice & support. To identify needs and facilitate solutions to their problems.
This might involve referring patients to the hospital based team, to the Primary Health Care
Team, or voluntary organisations.
To run weekly Nurse-Led Clinics at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary & a monthly Nurse-Led Clinic
at Fraserburgh Hospital.
To visit patients resident in Aberdeen City & Shire in their own homes, when appropriate.
To facilitate administration of clinics in line with NHS Grampian policies, & in collaboration
with the stroke service administrative assistant.
To carry out ECG’s at stroke clinics as requested. Training will be given.
To maintain confidential records of all referrals and update CHSS Stroke Nurse Database.
To provide monthly reports and contribute to an annual report on the work undertaken.
To raise public awareness of stroke/TIA and its prevention.
To ensure awareness of the existence and function of the Stroke Nurse & the Charity.
To apply evidence based knowledge to achieve best practice.
To keep up-to-date with advances in stroke care and attend study days where appropriate.
General
To participate with key groups within NHS Grampian Stroke MCN, and associated
subgroups as required.
To work in partnership with health professionals from primary and secondary care, statutory
agencies and voluntary organisations.
To assist with the development & review of new CHSS patient information resources.
To assist in the evaluation of the post, ensuring continuous quality improvement.
To participate in CHSS departmental, regional, organisational meetings and associated
groups.
To liaise regularly with the Lead Stroke Nurse.
To undertake other duties as directed by the Lead Stroke Nurse.

Summary of Terms and Conditions of Employment
Structure:
The post is one of a Stroke Team of five covering the hospitals within
the Grampian area: Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, Woodend Hospital, Dr
Gray’s, Elgin & Fraserburgh Hospital
Location:
Office base: Ashgrove House, Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.
Term:
Permanent
Salary:
On a scale of £24,380 - £30,293 per annum
Grade 3(ii), NJC Scale Points 27 - 34 (AfC band 6 )
New appointments are normally placed at the base of the salary
scale unless there are exceptional circumstances.
Hours of work:
32.5 hours, Monday to Friday
Flexible working under a system of managed time may be required.
Review of Work:
The postholder is subject to the CHSS objective setting, supervision
and appraisal process.
Annual Leave:
24-30 days per annum, dependent on length of service, plus 12 public
and local holidays.
Travel:
The use of a car is essential. Mileage allowance is reimbursed at 45
pence per mile. All other reasonable travel, subsistence and other
necessary expenses are reimbursed.
Pension scheme:
CHSS operates a contributory Group Personal Pension scheme,
which all employees are entitled to join; contributions are on an agerelated scale of 1% to 3% for employee contributions and 5% to 11%
for employer contributions. There are also schemes which provides
death-in-service benefit and permanent health insurance..
