Application
Mathematics Fellowships for Middle Grade Teachers
May 2005-August 2006
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The “Math Fellows” program is a collaborative effort of the Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) and the
University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM) and is an initiative of the Milwaukee Partnership Academy
and the Milwaukee Mathematics Partnership. The goal of the Math Fellows program is to provide an
opportunity for teachers to deepen their mathematics content knowledge leading to improved mathematics
teaching and learning.
“Math Fellows” will be able to enroll in special sections of four courses offered by the UWM
Department of Mathematical Sciences. These courses were developed at UWM specifically for teachers
and will be taught by UWM faculty and experienced classroom teachers. The courses include:
(1) Problem Solving
(2) Geometry
(3) Probability and Statistics
(4) Algebraic Structures
The program will waive tuition (undergraduate, resident, off-campus) and provide books and materials for
participants. All courses will be held at MPS sites. (No need to worry about UWM parking!)
Upon successful completion of the program, Math Fellows will receive a MPS Mathematics Fellowship
Certificate of Recognition.
Math Fellows may also take additional free courses in algebra and calculus and receive a transcript
notation indicating completion of the UWM Middle Childhood to Early Adolescence education program
mathematics minor.
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
This program is open to current teachers of mathematics in public and non-public schools serving City of
Milwaukee students. Participation for non-public schools is reserved at 15% of the openings.
Priority will be given to teachers of mathematics in grades 5–8, to teachers who will be teaching
mathematics in these grades in Fall 2005, and to teachers who meet course prerequisites. In addition,
priority will be given to individuals currently licensed in Wisconsin to teach any of the grades from 5th
through 8th . Other individuals may apply and will be considered on a space available basis. For example,
if individuals do not meet course prerequisites it may be possible to fulfill these requirements prior to
beginning the program. Distribution across schools and Milwaukee will be also considered.
To be eligible, applicants must meet UWM admission requirements and meet course prerequisites.
Admission to UWM requires that participants have a high school diploma or equivalent and be accepted
as a University Special Student. Course prerequisites require that participants have grades of C or better in
UWM courses Math 109 or Math 175 and Math 176 or in equivalent college-level courses. It may be
possible to substitute appropriate teaching experience in lieu of Math 176; decisions will be made on an
individual basis.
