Texas History Day Competition May 27, 2003 Page 1 of 2 SUBJECT: Recognition of Student Historian, Second Place Winner in Texas History Day Competition PRESENTER: Denise Collier, Director for Curriculum and Instruction RECOMMENDATION That the Board of Trustees recognize Stephen Pulvirent, Murchison Middle School student, for placing second in the Texas History Day competition. BACKGROUND INFORMATION For more than twenty-five years the National History Day program has promoted the teaching and learning of history in America’s schools. This program is a leading model of performance –based learning. National History Day engages students in grades 6 through 12 in the process of discovery and interpretation of historical topics. Students may choose from documentaries, exhibits, performances or research papers on research related to an annual theme. Projects are evaluated at local, regional, state and national competitions. First and second place winners at state history days in junior and senior are eligible to advance to National History Day. Stephen Pulvirent, a student at Murchison Middle School, won second place in the Junior Division at Texas History Day on May 10 for his Individual Exhibit entitled, “Power to the Press.” His teacher is Michele Mauldin. Stephen will be competing at National History Day, June 15-19, at the University of Maryland in Baltimore. ACTION REQUIRED Board approval. Also deserving of recognition is Stephen’s social studies teacher, Michele Mauldin, for providing leadership and guidance to her students. Stephen will take his award-winning Individual Exhibit, “Power to the Press,” to the National History Day competition in June at the University of Maryland in Baltimore. The Board of Trustees of the Austin Independent School District is honored to be represented by such a talented and dedicated student, and acknowledges his exemplary student achievement in social studies.
